IcyLib: A Scalable Solution for Reproducible Image Classification Workflows
Get PDFWith the rapid expansion of e-commerce over time, ensuring the diversity and quality of product images has become a critical challenge infeasible for human completion. In conjunction with Walmart Global Tech for the Team 1 Data Science Practicum Project, image classification models were trained to assess product image sets, but training and deploying such models often involves repetitive code and inefficient processes. This thesis presents a reusable modeling library, named IcyLib, designed to streamline the training, validation, and testing of image classification models as well as dataset importation using PyTorch. IcyLib provides a structured yet flexible approach for model implementation, currently supporting ResNet and EfficientNet architectures with minimal user effort through JSON configuration files. By automating dataset handling, model training, and performance evaluation, IcyLib significantly reduces redundancy and potential errors while improving usability, reproducibility, and readability of code. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and efficacy of this framework in classifying Walmart.com product images, offering a scalable solution for future applications in e-commerce image analysis

These shootings routinely share characteristics which make them an ideal target for public health and injury prevention efforts. As individual\u27s often learn about unintentional pediatric shootings and form opinions based on media reports of these incidents, it is crucial that we explore how the mainstream media is framing these events and what must be changed in order to better support prevention efforts. The Effects of Anorexia Nervosa on Muscular Force Production

People with AN tend to have lower muscle mass and strength as a side effect of malnutrition. Little study has been done on the metabolic effects of anorexia as they relate to the loss of muscle strength. The Changing Kitchen: Analyzing Sears Mail Order Home Kitchens and Gender Inequality in the United States between 1908 and 1940
Get PDFThe Sears Roebuck & Co mail order home was no exception to the idea that architecture and design are products of culture and society. Penny Sparke, a scholar of domestic interiors, writes that design is informed by “economics, politics, technology, culture, society, our psychological make-up, ethics, and the world’s ecological systems” (Sparke 8). In 1908, Sears responded to an increase in demand for single-family housing by releasing a home that could be delivered right to your door. This study investigates the ways in which gender inequality, particularly, the confinement of women to domestic space and housekeeping labor, manifests itself in architecture and design. This study analyzes floor plans, diagrams kitchen work triangles, and explores workflow to understand the intentions and solutions of the Sears kit home kitchen design more explicitly. Other reasons for specific design solutions were also taken into account when researching this topic. The postwar housing market, demands of single families, and the cultural climate could have also contributed to decisions made in the design of these homes. This research combines all of these ideas to answer the question of whether the Sears kit home kitchen influenced and prolonged ideas of gender inequality by isolating the woman of the home to a space that neither served its user nor advanced the cause of progressive womanhood
Biomaterial-Driven Approaches to Investigate Spinal Cord Injury Mechanisms and Enhance Repair Strategies
No full textBiomaterials play a critical role in regenerative medicine by providing structural support, modulating the injury environment, and enabling targeted therapeutic interventions. In the context of traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI), biomaterials offer a unique platform to both investigate underlying pathological mechanisms and develop strategies for functional repair. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) biomimetic model of tSCI is used to investigate the metabolic shifts in reactive astrocytes, and different decellularization strategies are investigated for optimal decellularization of porcine dura mater. A comprehensive understanding of the metabolic shifts in reactive astrocytes can be valuable for the development of a metabolic-derived treatment to tSCI. The collagen I fiber density within the model is manipulated with two casting approaches, and the higher fiber density activates the astrocytes. Glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, and glutamate shuffling activity were analyzed with modulation of the morphology and extracellular matrix binding. Results found morphology to affect these pathways inconsistently with findings from past works which suggest further addition of tSCI mimicking factors. However, inhibiting integrin-β1 from binding with extracellular collagen I has shown significant results with an upregulation of oxidative phosphorylation and decreasing glutamate shuffling activity. This calls for further mechanism study of what exact downstream signals are regulating the metabolic pathways. For the decellularization of porcine dura mater, three characteristics were mainly analyzed: genetic component removal, preservation of extracellular matrix proteins, and cell viability when incorporated into hydrogels. Out of three dura-specific and one standardized protocol, the standardized protocol was observed to be the most optimal when graded upon the three focused characteristics
Sports Betting, the gateway drug to a gambling addiction: A study of the implications of sports gambling on societal well-being and its effects on the younger generation

It is everywhere you turn. In recent years we have seen unprecedented growth in the advertising, activities, and addiction of gambling. To put it into perspective “the AGA reported that total revenue from land-based casino games, sports betting and iGaming reached 10.92 billion came from sports betting specifically which was a 44.5% increase from the prior year (Reynolds, 2024). Factors contributing to the rise include the increase in gambling advertisements, the legalization of sports betting, and the removal of environmental barriers to gambling. Presently, gambling addictions may start at a younger age than in previous years. Many college students engage in gambling, whether through sports betting, going to the casino, or playing blackjack on their phones. Without proper restriction and awareness of gambling addiction disorders, the negative consequences will continue to affect people worldwide.
In today’s world, gambling, particularly sports betting, is heavily promoted. Super Bowl advertisements, halftime shows, and television commercials frequently feature gambling ads. In fact, the NHL, NFL, MBA, and MLB all have deals with sportsbook operators (Bumbaca, 2023). It may not have been noticed until now how often these ads occur. There is evidence that gambling advertisements most heavily affect children, young people, and those already suffering from gambling addictions (McGrane et al. 2023). They serve as a subliminal reminder that a bet is only a few clicks away, making gambling seem fun and risk-free.
People are developing gambling behaviors at a young age. With the increasing popularity of sports betting and fantasy sports, gambling has become a hobby for many college students. Professional sports leagues exploit gambling addictions to make millions, similar to how cigarette manufacturers exploit nicotine addictions for profit. Advancements in technology allow sports gambling to happen anytime and anywhere from a cell phone.
People addicted to gambling are aware of the potential financial losses, but they may not consider the other adverse impacts it can have on their lives. “From a clinical perspective, gambling disorder is characterized as a behavioral addiction involving persistent and repetitive behaviors leading to significant harm or distress” (Kardefelt-Winther et al. 2017). Gambling can affect personal well-being, family relationships, impulse control, and morality. These and other factors will be further discussed in this project.
This research project has the potential to positively affect our community, this educational institution, and society as a whole. It is important to spread awareness of problem gambling and to educate others so that they may understand the scope of this issue. A broader knowledge of addiction, gambling behavior, and psychological well-being can contribute to improving the outcomes for individuals affected by gambling. These findings may provide data to implement gambling regulations that support prevention and treatment. My goal is to increase awareness, reduce the number of individuals who engage in problem gambling, and to increase the practice of responsible gambling, as encouraged by this research. Sports betting is heading in a scary direction. With studies like this, its path can be changed.

PILGRIMS ON THE UPWARD WAY: The African American Community in Eureka Springs and The Church at Its Heart
Get PDFOn May 13, 1899, an unknown hand began a ledger. The heading for that page began, Yeartley Conference Record Book of Pilgrim Chapel A.M.E. Church. The remainder of the page is blank. The following entry dates to April 18, 1902, and details collections in a different hand. These pages are from the Pilgrim Chapel AME Church in Eureka Springs and Harrison. From 1899 to 1911, this church served as the center of the African-American community in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, providing unwavering support to its members through community and worship. In time, they would buy land and build a church. The church would house a school. They would pay their pastor a stipend and eventually build a parsonage. The African-American community in Eureka Springs would disappate before the 1920s. This ledger in the University of Arkansas Special Collections provides insight into a time of unity and growth for a group of former enslaved people and their children. My presentation will share insights about the church and the ledger, part of ongoing research into this community and its members, and the reasons for the community’s abandonment.
Interestingly, local historians, including myself, considered this ledger lost. I spent hours looking for it in places documented in a 1985 local history book. I have been working on transcribing the ledger to glean information about the church and its members. This work aims to inform about Eureka Springs’ history and to spotlight a time in the history of former enslaved people. Because of natural disasters like fires and flooding, as well as the lack of accurate reporting for African Americans during this time, Eureka Springs newspaper archives are not available.
