    Writing About a Stressful Experience Can Impair Visual Working Memory

    Acute stress has been well-established to impair working memory. However, less is known about how writing about an unresolved stressor may influence working memory or working memory processes. We addressed these issues in the present study (N = 282) by randomly assigning participants to write about an unresolved stressful experience (stressful writing condition or the events of the previous day). We then both measured performance on a change detection task and used computational modeling to estimate the processes underlying performance: attention, capacity, and guessing bias. We found that, relative to the control condition, writing about a stressful experience impaired change detection task performance and significantly impaired task attention. These results show that the effects of writing about an unresolved stressor may mimic the effects of acute stress on working memory, rather than conforming to expectations from mood-as-information theory

    Research Note: Carcass Yield and Meat Quality in High- and Low-water Efficient Broiler Lines Exposed to Heat Stress

    Heat stress (HS) and water scarcity are significant challenges to sustainable poultry production worldwide. It is, therefore, critical to identify effective strategies to prevent, withstand, or adapt to these challenges. After four generations of divergent selection for water efficiency, the present study was undertaken to determine the effect of HS on meat quality and muscle myopathy incidences in high (HWE)- and low (LWE)-water efficient broilers. Day-old male chicks (240 chicks/line) were allotted randomly by line and body weight-matched groups to 12 controlled-environmental chambers (2 pens/chamber). At d29, birds were exposed to 2 environmental conditions (thermoneutral (TN), 25°C; or cyclic HS, 36°C, 9h/d) in a 2 pound 2 factorial design. On d49, birds were processed, carcass parts were weighed, meat quality and muscle myopathy incidence were assessed. Processing data were analyzed by Two-way ANOVA and Tukey \u27s HSD multiple comparison test, and frequency of muscle myopathy score between groups was determined using Chi-square and Fisher \u27s exact test. Significance was set at P \u3c 0.05. As no significant environment by line interaction was discerned, the 2 main factors were analyzed separately. High water efficient birds had significantly higher tender- and leg quarter (LQ)-weight as well as carcass without giblet (WOG), chilled carcass WOG (CWOG), wing, LQ, and rack yields compared to their LWE counterparts. Both abdominal fat content and yields were significantly greater in LWE than HWE chickens. Chronic HS exposure significantly decreased dock, WOG, fat, CWOG, breast, tender, wing, and LQ weights as well as breast yield. HWE chickens had a significantly lower b* value compared to the LWE birds and HS significantly reduced the drip loss and the b* value compared to TN condition. Compared to LWE, HWE birds had higher and lower incidence of severe woody breast (WB) and white striping (WS) under TN and HS, respectively. HS reduced the incidence of both myopathies in both lines. In conclusion, the genetic selection for water efficiency seems to improve carcass yield, reduce fat content, and decrease the breast b* value. HWE birds had higher incidences of WB and WS under TN, which is reversed under HS conditions.     Changes in Physical Activity and Sleep Following the COVID-19 Pandemic on a University Campus: Perception Versus Reality

    It has been hypothesized that key lifestyle behaviors of physical activity and sleep worsened in response to the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. However, there have been inconsistencies in findings of changes in these key lifestyle behaviors across populations likely due to the wide variety of assessment methods. The purpose of the study was to compare physical activity and sleep before and after the COVID-19 pandemic using accelerometers and self-reported behaviors. A longitudinal follow-up was conducted on students, faculty, and staff at a university campus in the United States. In the periods before March 2020 (covering the academic years of 2018-2019 or 2019-2020) and again in April-June 2021, participants completed surveys to evaluate their physical activity and sleep behaviors and wore an accelerometer. A total of 44 participants completed the survey at both timepoints and 32 completed accelerometer assessment at both timepoints. Fifty-seven percent of participants reported a perceived decline in physical activity, while 30% reported a worsening in sleep. From self-reported data, overall physical activity did not change, but there was a decrease in active transport (p \u3c 0.001) and increase in domestic physical activity (p = 0.012). Sleep quality decreased as evidenced by an increase in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores (p = 0.045). There were no changes in accelerometer measured physical activity or sleep. There were no changes in physical or mental health. While perceptions of physical activity declined from prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no changes in device-measured physical activity, and changes in self-reported physical activity differed by domain

    Maximal Estimates for the ∂-Neumann Problem on Non-pseudoconvex Domains

    It is well known that elliptic estimates fail for the ∂-Neumann problem. Instead, the best that one can hope for is that derivatives in every direction but one can be estimated by the associated Dirichlet form, and when this happens, we say that the ∂-Neumann problem satisfies maximal estimates. In the pseudoconvex case, a necessary and sufficient geometric condition for maximal estimates has been derived by Derridj (for (0, 1)-forms) and Ben Moussa (for (0, q)-forms when q ≥ 1). In this paper, we explore necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for maximal estimates in the non-pseudoconvex case. We also discuss when the necessary conditions and sufficient conditions agree and provide examples. Our results subsume the earlier known results from the pseudoconvex case

    Synthesis of Silica-encapsulated Myristic Acid Phase-Change-Assisted Nanocapsules for Thermal Management Applications

    Myristic acid-based silica (MA/SiO2) nano-encapsulated phase change materials (NePCMs) were synthesized by the sol–gel process. Five different samples of the MA/SiO2 nanocapsules were prepared by varying the mass of the myristic acid. The nanocapsules were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). These characterization techniques confirmed the successful encapsulation of the myristic acid inside the silica shell. The maximum latent heat was found to be 114.46 J/g for the sample which was prepared with 25 g myristic acid and 20 ml tetraethyl orthosilicate precursor material. The highest encapsulation ratio of approximately 62% was obtained in the same sample and the mean size of the nanocapsules was 597 nm. The thermal stability of these nanocapsules was assessed using the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results exhibited that the thermophysical properties remained consistent after 50 heating/cooling thermal cycles indicating excellent durability of the NePCMs

    Social Anxiety is Related to Worse Recognition Memory of Angry Faces

    Many studies have examined attention biases as a risk factor of social anxiety disorder (SAD). Fewer studies have examined biases in memory, and the results are discrepant. Because memory depends on attention, it is possible that memory biases depend on whether stimuli are attended, such as when they are task-relevant. The aim of the present study was to investigate how social anxiety is associated with biased recognition memory of threatening social stimuli. Participants (N = 159) completed a task in which a semi-transparent face and house spatially overlapped. Participants were cued to identify the gender of the face or whether the house had a deck. 50% of the faces expressed anger, and 50% were neutral. Participants then completed a surprise recognition memory test. Social anxiety was associated with worse recognition of angry faces, but not neutral faces, regardless of whether the trial required them to attend to the face or the house. The finding did not hold for a broader measure of anxiety. Additionally, recognition memory of neutral faces was worse when they were not task-relevant, regardless of social anxiety. The results suggest that reduced memory of angry facial expressions is associated with social anxiety. Support was not found for the dependence of this bias on attention

    Molecular Dynamics Investigation of the Influenza Hemagglutinin Conformational Changes in Acidic pH

    The surface protein hemagglutinin (HA) of the influenza virus plays a pivotal role in facilitating viral infection by binding to sialic acid receptors on host cells. Its conformational state is pH-sensitive, impacting its receptor-binding ability and evasion of the host immune response. In this study, we conducted extensive equilibrium microsecond-level all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the HA protein to explore the influence of low pH on its conformational dynamics. Specifically, we investigated the impact of protonation on conserved histidine residues (H1062) located in the hinge region of HA2. Our analysis encompassed comparisons between nonprotonated (NP), partially protonated (1P, 2P), and fully protonated (3P) conditions. Our findings reveal substantial pH-dependent conformational alterations in the HA protein, affecting its receptor-binding capability and immune evasion potential. Notably, the nonprotonated form exhibits greater stability compared to protonated states. Conformational shifts in the central helices of HA2 involve outward movement, counterclockwise rotation of protonated helices, and fusion peptide release in protonated systems. Disruption of hydrogen bonds between the fusion peptide and central helices of HA2 drives this release. Moreover, HA1 separation is more likely in the fully protonated system (3P) compared to nonprotonated systems (NP), underscoring the influence of protonation. These insights shed light on influenza virus infection mechanisms and may inform the development of novel antiviral drugs targeting HA protein and pH-responsive drug delivery systems for influenza

    Water Potential from Adaptive Force Matching for Ice and Liquid with Revised Dispersion Predicts Supercooled Liquid Anomalies in Good Agreement with Two Independent Experimental Fits

    A revised version of the Water potential from Adaptive force matching for Ice and Liquid (WAIL) was developed by using the previous data set for fitting the WAIL model but with a dispersion term calculated using symmetry adapted perturbation theory (SAPT). The model has no adjustable parameters and relies solely on fitting first-principles information. The new model, named revised WAIL (rWAIL), shows improved predictions of most properties of water when compared to the previously published WAIL model. The rWAIL model also compares favorably to other first-principles-derived water models, such as MB-Pol, at only a fraction of the computational cost. The rWAIL model is used to study the properties of supercooled water. The model shows evidence of a liquid–liquid phase transition (LLPT) in the supercooled regimes with the liquid–liquid critical point (LLCP) at 203 K and 90 MPa. This estimate is in good agreement with a recent polynomial fit to the experimental density of water. Also, the fit to the surface tension of supercooled water based on the rWAIL model shows excellent agreement with the corresponding fit to the experimental data. Consistent with previously published molecular dynamics and experimental data, the surface tension of water exhibits exponential growth in the supercooled regime, which is likely a result of the emergence of a low-density liquid form of water. The simulation thus unites two separate experimental fits with one first-principles-based model, lending strong evidence of an LLPT in real water
