    Real-Time Simulation and Workforce Development for Industrial Control Systems with TROY: Testbed for Resilient Operational sYstems

    Digital automation for critical infrastructure (CI) is largely supported by industrial control systems (ICS) and operational technology (OT). The increase in digital automation as time progresses correlates with a rise in targeted cyberattacks at these vulnerable yet precious assets. TROY: Testbed for Resilient Operational sYstems, a highly scalable hybrid IT & OT utilizing virtual machines and a Typhoon-HIL real-time simulation, contributes to cybersecurity for CI by serving as a research and workforce development platform. By using Typhoon-HIL to simulate ICS, the platform can be used to replicate a realistic network environment for a myriad of research functions. The system uses the NETLAB+ interface to allow users to seamlessly interact with the testbed and allow for the addition of course curriculum for enabling an intuitive hands-on virtual classroom

    This thesis contains a marketing plan for a conference called NWA For The Nations. The conference will be held in Fayetteville, Arkansas on November 8th and 9th of 2024. The goals of the marketing plan are to grow attendance at the conference and to also grow local church involvement. Social media, email, and church involvement are the three main areas that my thesis focuses on. I highlight best practices for each of these methods to help the conference reach the goal of 1000 attendees. The whole purpose of the marketing plan and the conference is to help Christians find their role in God\u27s global purpose of reaching the nations with His glory

    Influences of Social Media on Nutrition Perceptions and Body Image Among Female College Students: A study of Health Impacts and Behavioral Responses

    Social media use is increasing among young adults with an average use of over four hours per day. The validity of dietary content on social media is questionable and can cause impacts on several factors. This research focused on exploring how female college students\u27 social media use impacts their nutrition knowledge, diet choices, and body image. Through the use of a survey, 332 participants completed this research. It was found that social media can cause changes in body image, both positive and negative. Additionally, the results showed that social media impacted the participants’ dietary decisions. It was also found that many women were able to identify misinformation on social media

    A Girls Guide to Study Abroad

    This thesis, titled A Girl’s Guide to Study Abroad, explores the multifaceted experiences of female students in international study programs through an autoethnographic lens. The research draws on my personal experiences during a semester abroad with the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) in Italy. To document and analyze the diverse challenges, adaptations, and growth I encountered, I utilized the Diarium app to capture daily notes encompassing personal reflections, logistical hurdles, and emotional insights. These reflections were subsequently analyzed through thematic analysis using the Braun and Clarke method in NVivo 12 software to identify emergent themes categorized as positive, challenging, or requiring improvement. The study uncovered common stressors female students face, including cultural adjustments, navigating social expectations, and accessing mental health resources while abroad. One key finding highlighted the lack of visibility and accessibility of mental health support within study abroad programs. The culmination of this analysis is an online resource, \u27A Girl’s Guide to Study Abroad,\u27 designed to provide future female students at the University of Arkansas with practical insights, support, and preparation tips. This resource aims to empower female students to navigate study abroad experiences with confidence, manage challenges effectively, and enhance their overall personal growth during international study

    Citizens’ Perceptions of Wetlands Before and During the Restoration of a Local Wetland

    This study investigates the impact of a wetland restoration project on homeowners\u27 perceptions and knowledge of wetlands in a residential area in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The research employs a pre- and during-restoration survey methodology to assess shifts in public perception and awareness of wetland environments. As part of the restoration project, native vegetation was reintroduced, and non-native species were removed, with the goals of ecological enhancement and improving the visual appeal of the wetland area. Surveys, consisting of Likert-scale questions and open-ended responses, were administered to homeowners before and during the restoration process to capture changes in demographic factors, wetland knowledge, site perceptions, and preferences for future restoration. Findings reveal that residents had a high level of wetland knowledge prior to the restoration, although their opinions on the aesthetic value of the wetland were divided. While the project did improve the visual appeal of the wetland, overall perceptions of its aesthetic value did not significantly change during the restoration, except for a notable increase in agreement with the statement, “The wetland is visually appealing.” This study concludes that while public knowledge about wetlands is generally strong within this community, aesthetic improvements alone are insufficient to significantly shift public perception in the short term. The research recommends future studies to incorporate more rigorous statistical analysis, extend the survey periods beyond the restoration phase, and include post-restoration perceptions to gain a fuller understanding of how wetland restoration influences community attitudes toward ecological preservation and landscape design

    The Creation of Intergenerational Playspaces

    The benefits of play are tenfold for both children and older adults, from improved cognitive function to enhanced social connections. However, traditional playgrounds often cater exclusively to one age group, limiting opportunities for intergenerational interaction. This study explores the design of intergenerational playspaces, focusing on those designed for intergenerational learning centers, institutions that operate as combined assisted living facilities and preschools. The research aims to answer the question: What does an intergenerational playspace look like, and how can it maximize the benefits of play for both age groups? The evolution of playgrounds for children and the older adults is examined, revealing past designs and equipment tailored to each age group\u27s needs. Despite their vast differences, both groups experience benefits across similar categories as defined in The Science of Play by Susan Solomon: Cognitive, Social, Emotional, and Physical. Intergenerational Learning Centers emerge as unique environments fostering interactions between preschoolers and older adults, yet they lack inclusively designed playspaces for the needs of both age groups. Interviews using the Draw and Tell method with children and residents from two intergenerational learning centers revealed valuable insights. The project employs several data collection methods including literature reviews and direct observations, but gains its primary results from in-person interviews. Four key categories—Landscaping, Space and Form, Ergonomics/Equipment, and Activity—are synthesized from data to guide designers in their creation of intergenerational playspaces. Specific examples from these categories are then assembled into an ABC book, a useful tool for designers to be able to apply the four categories in their intergenerational playspace designs. This study not only highlights the benefits of intergenerational learning centers and intergenerational play, but also provides a guide for designing playspaces that cater to the needs of both children and older adults. Bridging the gap between ages, these spaces could promote social cohesion and enriched experiences for all participant

    Probable Extirpation of the Jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) from Arkansas

    The black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) was first documented in Arkansas during the modern era in Franklin County in 1927. Over the next few decades records were reported from multiple counties in northwest Arkansas and the species was locally common in Benton, Crawford, and Washington counties in the 1950s. The last Arkansas record documented in the scientific literature was from 1968 and since then there have only been three credible reports, with the last being from the late 1980s. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission solicited reports of jackrabbits from the public and failed to find evidence of them from a limited number of roadkill surveys conducted in western Arkansas from 2007-2024. Evidence from an online citizen science database suggests that the eastern extent of the range of this species is now in central Oklahoma. With no credible records in Arkansas for over 40 years it is likely that this species is no longer present in the state

    Ultrastructure of the Biflagellated Spermatozoon in the Western Siren, Siren nettingi (Caudata: Sirenidae), using Scanning Electron Microscopy

    I investigated the ultrastructure of the biflagellated spermatozoon of the Western Siren, Siren nettingi, using scanning electron microscopy from salamanders collected in northeastern Arkansas. My primary goal in this study was to reveal the general morphology of the distinctive sperm cell components (two axonemes, two undulating membranes, and two axial fibers), which run nearly the entire length of the spermatozoon. These remarkable gamete structures are found in members of the salamander family Sirenidae and do not conform to spermatozoal ultrastructure of any other salamander species. Moreover, the biflagellated sperm are the end product of an extraordinary assemblage of complex maturation stages associated with acystic lobular spermatogenesis, a unique type of spermatogenesis known only to occur in these salamanders
