Eruption of primary Incisors: prevalence of sequence reversal and attitude of mothers In a Yoruba Community
Objective: The mandibular primary central Incisors are usually the first set of teeth to erupt In a child. However, eruption of the maxillary primary central incisors may precede that of the mandibular primary central Incisors, which Is viewed as a taboo among some tribes In Nigeria.Various means of dealing with the \u27taboo\u27 have been suggested In different communities. The main aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of maxillary primary Incisors erupting before the mandibular among some children and the acceptance of the situation by their mothers.
Method: A cross sectional study of 290 nursing mothers and their children In the Immunisation clinics of the University College Hospital and the Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital both In Ibadan, Nigeria was carried out. Intra-oral examination of the children was done to ascertain that each of them had at least a tooth after which the mothers were required to fill anInterviewer-administered questionnaire.
Result: Nine (3.1%) out of the 290 children assessed erupted the maxillary Incisors ahead of the mandibular counterparts and their mothers allowed the teeth to erupt normally. One hundred and fifty-seven (54.1 %) of the mothers agreed that the tooth should be allowed to grow normally as part of the series of the primary dentition, while 26.9% wlll rather have It extracted.
Conclusion: Though a greater percentage of the mothers would retain the affected tooth, concerted effort still needs to be made to further enlighten nursing mothers on the Issue of reversed eruption sequence.

Polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma of the palate a case report
Polymorphous low grade adenocardnoma (PLGA} Is a rare, slow growing malignant neoplasm with a propensity to arise predominantly from minor salivary glands. It is exclusively observed In the soft and hard palate regions, exhibiting an Indolent biology. A 31 yr old male who came to the department of Periodontics for a routine deaning of teeth was Incidentally detected with a painless swelling on the palatal 26, 27 region. Histopathologlcal, immunohistochemical, radiographic and CBCT (Cone beam computed tomography) Investigations aided In deriving at a final diagnosis of Polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma. The piezoelectric unit was used to excise the mass with no further metastasis or Involvement of the palatal vault. The site of excision healed uneventfully and the hlstopathologlcal report of the excised mass showed no signs of nerve Involvement. This tumor is not only a rare lesion but also depicts a similar clinical picture of that of a benign neoplasm, thus poses as a diagnostic dilemma to the clinician.

Prevalence of traumadic dental Injuries among new orthodondic patients seen at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Nigeria
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries among new orthodontic patients.
Method: The dental records of 150 patients consisting of 57 males (38%) and 93 females (62%) with a mean age of 18.4 ± 7.6 years who presented for orthodontic treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital Dental Centre were assessed for data relating to traumatic Injuries to the permanent anterior teeth. The causes and types of dental trauma, type of tooth involved and number of affected teeth were evaluated with patients\u27 histories, study casts and pretreatment radiographs. Descriptive statistics were performed for the study variables, age and gender differences In the frequency of traumatized teeth were evaluated with the chi-square test.
Result: The results revealed dental trauma prevalence of 21.3% among the new patients before the onset of their orthodontic treatment. The prevalence of dental trauma was significantly higher in males (p<0.05) and most frequently observed In patients aged 6 to 10 years. Falls was the commonest cause of dental traumatic Injuries among the patients (37.5%). The most common type of trauma to the teeth was enamel fracture (46. 9%) followed by avulslon (28.1 %). Most traumatic Injuries affected the right and left maxillary central Incisors. Frequency of trauma to only one tooth was observed in 68.8% of the patients and multiple teeth Involvement seen In 31.2%.
Conclusion: This study revealed a high prevalence of traumatic dental injuries among new patients seeking orthodontic treatment at Benin City, Nigeria. An early orthodontic evaluation and interceptive therapy where appropriate is recommended to reduce risk of dental trauma in Nigerian young population.
