Groups whose proper subgroups are locally
finite-by-nilpotent

Abstract
If X is a class of groups, then a group G is said to be minimal non X -group
if all its proper subgroups are in the class X , but G itself is not an X -group. The
main result of this note is that if c > 0 is an integer and if G is a minimal non
(LF)N (respectively, (LF)N c)-group, then G is a finitely generated perfect group
which has no non-trivial finite factor and such that G/Frat(G) is an infinite simple
group; where N (respectively, Nc, LF) denotes the class of nilpotent (respectively,
nilpotent of class at most c, locally finite) groups and Frat(G) stands for the
Frattini subgroup of G.
Résumé
Si X est une classe de groupes, alors un groupe G est dit minimal non X -groupe
si tous ses sous-groupes propres sont dans la classe X , alors que G lui-même n’est
pas un X -groupe. Le principal résultat de cette note affirme que si c > 0 est
un entier et si G est un groupe minimal non (LF)N (respectivement, (LF)N c)-
groupe, alors G est un groupe parfait, de type fini, n’ayant pas de facteur fini non
trivial et tel que G/Frat(G) est un groupe simple infini ; où N (respectivement,
Nc, LF) désigne la classe des groupes nilpotents (respectivement, nilpotents de
classe égale au plus à c, localement finis) et Frat(G) est le sous-groupe de Frattini
de G.
1. Introduction
If X is a class of groups, then a group G is said to be minimal non-X
if all its proper subgroups are in the class X , but G itself is not an X -
group. Many results have been obtained by many authors on minimal
non X -groups for various classes of groups X , for example see [1], [2],

[3], [5], [6], [8], [11], [12], [13]. In particular, in [13] it is proved that if
G is a finitely generated minimal non FN -group, then G is a perfect
group which has no non-trivial finite factor and such that G/Frat(G) is
an infinite simple group; where N (respectively, F) denotes the class of
nilpotent (respectively, finite) groups and Frat(G) stands for the Frattini
subgroup of G. The aim of the present note is to extend the above results
to minimal non (LF)N (respectively, (LF)N c)-groups, and to prove that
there are no minimal non (LF)N (respectively, (LF)N c)-groups which
are not finitely generated; where c > 0 is an integer and Nc (respectively,
LF) denotes the class of nilpotent groups of class at most c (respectively,
locally finite groups). More precisely we shall prove the following results.
Theorem 1.1. If G is a minimal non (LF)N -group, then G is a finitely
generated perfect group which has no non-trivial finite factor and such that
G/Frat(G) is an infinite simple group.
Using Theorem 1.1, we shall prove the following result on minimal non
(LF)N c-groups.
Theorem 1.2. Let c > 0 be an integer and let G be a minimal non
(LF)N c-group. Then G is a finitely generated perfect group which has no
non-trivial finite factor and such that G/Frat(G) is an infinite simple
group.
Note that if X1 and X2 are two classes of groups such that X1 ⊆ X2, then
a minimal non X1-group is either a minimal non X2-group or an X2-group.
From Xu’s results [13, Theorem 3.5], an infinitely generated minimal non
FN -group is a locally finite-by-nilpotent group. So one might expect, as
we shall prove in Proposition 2.1, that there are no infinitely generated
minimal non (LF)N -group.
Note that minimal non (LF)N (respectively, non (LF)N c)-groups ex-
ist. Indeed, the group constructed by Ol’shanskii [7] is a simple torsion-free
finitely generated group whose proper subgroups are cyclic.
2. Minimal non (LF)N -groups
A part of Theorem 1.1 is an immediate consequence of the following Propo-
sition:

Proposition 2.1. Let G be a group whose proper subgroups are in the
class (LF)N . Then G belongs to (LF)N if it satisfies one of the following
two conditions:
(i) G is finitely generated and has a proper subgroup of finite index,
(ii) G is not finitely generated.
Proof. (i) Suppose that G is finitely generated and let N be a proper
subgroup of finite index in G. By [10, Theorem 1.6.9] we may assume that
N is normal in G. So N is in (LF)N and it is also finitely generated. Hence
γk+1(N) is locally finite for some integer k ≥ 0. Since N is of finite index
in G, G/γk+1(N) is a finitely generated group in the class NF , so that
it satisfies the maximal condition on subgroups. Therefore every proper
subgroups of G/γk+1(N) is in FN . Now Lemma 4 of [3] states that a
finitely generated locally graded group whose proper subgroups are finite-
by-nilpotent is itself finite-by-nilpotent. Since groups in the class NF are
clearly locally graded, we deduce that G/γk+1(N) is in FN , so G is in
(LF)N .
(ii) Suppose that G is not finitely generated and let x1, ..., xn be n
elements of finite order in G. Since the subgroup 〈x1, ..., xn〉 is proper in
G, it is in (LF)N , hence it is finite. This means that the elements of finite
order in G form a locally finite subgroup T . If G/T is not finitely generated,
then it is locally nilpotent and its proper subgroups are nilpotent as G/T
is torsion-free. Now Theorem 2.1 of [11] states that a torsion-free locally
nilpotent group with all proper subgroups nilpotent is itself nilpotent.
Therefore G/T is nilpotent, so G is in (LF)N . Now if G/T is finitely
generated, then there exists a finitely generated subgroup H such that
G = HT . Since G is not finitely generated, H is proper in G, so H is in
(LF)N . Since G/T ' H/H ∩T , we deduce that G/T is in (LF)N , hence
G/T is nilpotent since it is torsion-free. Therefore G is in (LF)N . 
Since finitely generated locally graded groups have proper subgroups of
finite index, the previous Proposition admits the following consequence :
Corollary 2.2. Let G be a locally graded group whose proper subgroups
are in the class (LF)N . Then G is in the class (LF)N .
Corollary 2.3. Let G be a non perfect group whose proper subgroups are
in the class (LF)N . Then G is in the class (LF)N .
Proof. If G is not finitely generated, then G is in (LF)N from (ii) of
Proposition 2.1. Now suppose that G is finitely generated. Therefore G/G′ ,

being a non trivial finitely generated locally graded group, has a non trivial
finite image. So G has a proper subgroup of finite index. Thus we deduce
from (i) of Proposition 2.1 that G is in (LF)N . 
Proof of Theorem 1.1. Let G be a minimal non (LF)N -group. It follows
from Proposition 2.1 and Corollary 2.3 that G is a finitely generated
perfect group which has no non trivial finite factor. Now we prove that
G/Frat(G) is an infinite simple group. Since finitely generated groups
have maximal subgroups, G/Frat(G) is non trivial and therefore infinite.
Let N be a proper normal subgroup of G properly containing Frat(G).
Then N is in (LF)N and there is an x ∈ N such that x /∈ Frat(G).
Hence there is a maximal subgroup M of G such that x /∈ M , so N is not
contained in M . Then G = NM and we have γk+1(M) is locally finite for
some integer k ≥ 0. Since G is perfect, then
G = γk+1(G) = γk+1(NM).
We show by induction on k that γk+1(NM) ⊆ Nγk+1(M). If k = 0, then
the result follows immediately. Now let k > 0, suppose inductively that
γk(NM) ⊆ Nγk(M) and let g be an element of γk+1(NM). Hence g can
be written as a finite product of elements of the form [x1y1, ..., xk+1yk+1]
with xi ∈ N and yi ∈ M for every 1 ≤ i ≤ k + 1. It follows by the
inductive hypothesis that the commutator v = [x1y1, ..., xkyk] of weight k
is in Nγk(M). So we get [v, xk+1yk+1] = [xy, xk+1yk+1] with x ∈ N and
y ∈ γk(M). Therefore

3. Minimal non (LF)N c-group
Lemma 3.1. Let G be a group and let F be the locally finite radical of G.
If G/F is nilpotent, then G/F is torsion-free.
Proof. Put G = G/F and suppose that G is nilpotent and let x be an
element of finite order in G. First of all, we show that the normal closure

Proposition 3.2. Let c > 0 be an integer and let G be a group whose
proper subgroups are in the class (LF)N c. Then G is in the class (LF)N c
if it satisfies one of the following two conditions:
(i) G is finitely generated and has a proper subgroup of finite index,
(ii) G is not finitely generated.
Proof. Suppose that G satisfies one of the conditions (i) or (ii). Since
(LF)N c is included in (LF)N , it follows from Proposition 2.1 that G is
in (LF)N . So there is a normal subgroup N such that N is locally finite
and G/N is nilpotent. Thus N is contained in F , the locally finite rad-
ical of G, and therefore G/F is nilpotent. Clearly, we may assume that
G is not locally finite, so G/F is non trivial and by Lemma 3.1, it is
torsion-free. If G/F is finitely generated, then as G/F is clearly locally
graded, G/F has a proper normal subgroup of finite index. So G/F be-
longs to ((LF)N c)F , hence G/F is in NcF as it is torsion-free. Therefore
G/F , being a nilpotent torsion-free group in the class NcF , is in Nc by
Lemma 6.33 of [9]. Consequently G is in (LF)N c. Now suppose that G/F
is not finitely generated and let a1, ..., ac+1 be elements of G/F . Since
〈a1, ..., ac+1〉 is proper in G/F , it is in (LF)N c and consequently it is in
Nc because G/F is torsion-free. So [a1, ..., ac+1] = 1, hence G/F is in Nc.
Therefore G is in (LF)N c.

Since finitely generated locally graded groups have proper subgroups of
finite index, Proposition 3.2 admits the following consequence :
Corollary 3.3. Let c > 0 be an integer and let G be a locally graded group
whose proper subgroups are in the class (LF)N c. Then G is in the class
(LF)N c.
Proof of Theorem 1.2. Let G be a minimal non (LF)N c-group. It follows
that every proper subgroup of G is in (LF)N . Now suppose that G is
in (LF)N , so there exists a normal subgroup N of G such that N is
locally finite and G/N is nilpotent. By Corollary 3.3, G/N is in (LF)N c,
consequently we deduce that G is in (LF)N c because N is locally finite; a
contradiction. Hence G is a minimal non (LF)N -group, and by Theorem
1.1, G is a finitely generated perfect group which has no non-trivial finite
factor and such that G/Frat(G) is an infinite simple group.

Sur l’écoulement d’un fluide dans un canal avec
obstacle au fond

Résumé
Nous considérons dans ce travail l’écoulement d’un fluide dans un canal plat
avec un obstacle au fond. Cet obstacle génère une surface libre qui n’est plus
horizontale, comme c’est le cas sans obstacle. Nous montrons que, dans le cas sur
critique, si l’obstacle n’est pas trop élevé, il y a une solution et une seule. Nous
donnons des indications pour le cas sous critique et pour le problème numérique.
1. Introduction
L’étude de la propagation d’une onde de surface pour l’écoulement d’un
fluide dans un canal plat avec un obstacle au fond a été menée par dif-
férents auteurs et de différentes manières. La littérature dans ce domaine
est abondante. Mentionnons en particulier, Forbes [3], King and Bloor [5],
Bouhadef [1], Boukari [4] et la bibligraphie indiquée dans ces papiers.
Dans cet article, nous considérons l’écoulement d’un fluide dans un
canal où nous supposons que le mouvement est bidimensionnel, uniforme
et irrotationnel, que le fluide est incompressible et non visqueux et qu’il se
déplace dans une direction, c’est-à-dire qu’il y a un amont et un aval. Nous
considérons le problème non linéaire avec les deux situations ; le cas super
critique (appelé également écoulement torrentiel) correspond au nombre
de Froude F = U√

supérieur à un. Dans cette situation, l’expérience nous
permet de supposer que la profondeur à l’infini amont est la même qu’à
l’infini aval. On noteH la hauteur du canal à l’infini amont, (U, 0) la vitesse
uniforme du fluide à l’infini amont, et g l’accélération due à la gravité. Une
méthode basée sur des espaces avec poids est proposée, cette méthode
exploite les propriétés de cet écoulement, en particulier, le comportement
à l’infini et l’ellipticité d’un certain problème. Elle est également basée sur
le théorème des fonctions implicites. Le cas sous critique (F < 1) est plus
compliqué car non seulement l’amplitude de l’onde en +∞ ne tend pas

vers zéro, mais de plus, le problème mathématique n’est pas elliptique.
Dans le traitement numérique, la situation se présente naturellement de
la même manière. Le cas super critique est plus simple que le cas sous
critique.
Remarque 1.1. Le nombre de Froude F représente également le rapport
entre l’énergie cinétique et l’énergie potentielle. Suivant que l’énergie ciné-
tique est plus grande ou plus petite que l’énergie potentielle, la situation
est totalement différente.
Le plan de cet article est le suivant : dans la section 2, nous donnons
les équations du modèle, la section 3 est dévolue au cas super critique.
Cette partie a été faite en collaboration avec R. Ait-Yahia-Djouadi et
D. Hernane-Boukari [2] tandis que la section 4 est réservée au cas sous
critique. Enfin dans la section 5, nous évoquerons brièvement le traitement
numérique. Nous présentons deux méthodes, l’une proposée par R. Ait-
Yahia-Djouadi en collaboration avec M. Amara, et l’autre proposée par
D. Hernane-Boukari en collaboration avec moi-même.
2. Présentation du problème

qui délimite le domaine en bas et définit l’obstacle, et H+γ(t, x) délimite
le domaine en haut ; γ(t, x) étant une inconnue du problème. La courbe
H + γ(t, x) est la surface libre.
On note Ψ la fonction courant ((u, v) = ∇ ∧ Ψ) qui est harmonique car
le fluide est incompressible ; u et v étant les composantes horizontale et
verticale de la vitesse :

On suppose la vitesse horizontale à l’infini amont connue, limx→−∞(u, v) =
(U, 0). Par contre à l’infini aval, pour le moment, on se contente d’imposer
que la vitesse et la côte sont bornées.
On suppose que la ligne de fond est une ligne de courant, ce qui implique
que Ψ y est constante. Il en est de même de la surface libre. On fixe la
constante du fond égale à zéro. Nous pouvons exprimer cela en termes de

Le fait que la surface libre soit inconnue implique la nécessité d’avoir une
autre équation. Cette équation est donnée par la relation dynamique qui

3. Le cas super critique (problème continu)
Le comportement est différent suivant que F est supérieur ou inférieur
à 1. Le cas F supérieur à un est ce qu’on appelle le cas super critique et
il est plus simple à étudier. L’expérience montre qu’alors à l’infini aval, la
surface libre se comporte comme à l’infini amont et on peut donc poser

4. Le cas sous critique
Dans cette partie, les calculs n’ont pas été faits jusqu’au bout. Cepen-
dant ceci est juste technique et ne présente certainement pas de difficultés
théoriques.
L’expérience physique montre que dans le cas où l’énergie potentielle
est plus grande que l’énergie cinétique, le comportement en +∞ de la sur-
face libre est oscillatoire et donc les lignes de courant ne tendent pas vers
l’horizontale ; ainsi, les espaces que l’on a considéré dans le cas super cri-
tique ne conviennent pas. Reprenons dans le cas sous critique le problème

5. L’approximation numérique
Du point de vue des difficultés, la situation est la même que dans le cas
continu. Le cas sous critique est nettement plus difficile que le cas super
critique.
Le calcul numérique amène à travailler dans une bande de largeur finie
et on doit donc imposer des conditions aux limites artificielles sur les
bords latéraux. Il est facile dans les deux cas d’imposer une condition
sur le bord latéral amont. Le bord latéral aval ne pose pas de problème
sérieux dans le cas super critique, car on peut supposer que le fluide tend
vers l’écoulement horizontal et donc imposer une condition de Neumann
nulle sur le bord latéral amont. Par contre, dans le cas sous critique les
oscillations interdisent cette condition.

Deux approches différentes sont actuellement étudiées, l’une dont les
schémas numériques sont écrits et testés par R. Ait-Yahia-Djouadi, en
collaboration avec M. Amara. Avec cette approche R. Ait-Yahia-Djouadi
essaie d’écrire un schéma d’éléments finis pour le problème aux limites
en décomposant le domaine par front, en commençant par l’amont , en
avançant pas à pas, et en essayant de situer la frontière libre au mieux et de
proche en proche. Cette méthode, a l’avantage de traiter en même temps
les deux situations à savoir, le cas super critique et le cas sous critique.
Malheureusement, des problèmes d’instabilité apparaîssent, problèmes qui
ne sont pas encore totalement maîtrisés.
La deuxième approche consiste à minimiser une fonctionnelle de do-
maine. Elle consiste à regarder l’énergie (notée E(Ω)) suivante :

et de faire une dérivation par rapport au domaine. Un schéma itératif,
permet de traiter le cas non linéaire. Malheureusement, les conditions im-
posés aux domaines admissibles font que ces schémas ne fonctionnent que
dans le cas super critique. Signalons que dans cette dernière situation, les
schémas numériques fonctionnent très bien. Cette méthode a été élaborée
en collaboration avec D. Hernane-Boukari.

Abstract
We are interested in the approximation and simulation of solutions for the
backward stochastic differential equations. We suggest two approximation schemes,
and we study the L2 induced error.
1. Introduction
Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDEs in short) have been
introduced by Pardoux and Peng [16]. One of the main motivations for
studying the BSDE’s has been to use it to solve diverse problems in mathe-
matical finance [8], in optimal stochastic control [11] and stochastic games
[6].
In this paper, we propose to simulate the solution (X, Y, Z) of the coupled

filtered probability space (Ω,F , P, (Ft)0≤t≤T ). The forward component X
will be approximated by the Euler or the Milshtein Scheme. The simulation
of the couple (Y, Z) is more delicate. Douglas et al presented in [7] a
numerical method for a class of Forward-Backward SDEs based on the
finite difference approximation of the associated PDE and the four steps
scheme developed in [13]. In [5], Chevance proposed a numerical method
for BSDE’s where the generator f is not dependent on the control gradient
Z. The difficulty is in the approximation of the process Z that comes only
from the martingale representation Theorem. In the case where f depends
only on Z, Bally has developed in [1] a discretization scheme considers a

random time partition. His method is more difficult to implement. The
work of Zhang [17] is more interesting but doesn’t answer the question of
approximation of Z. Bouchard and Touzi [3] invested this work to give
an implicit approximation scheme. Recently, Gobet et al [10] propose a
new numerical scheme based on iterative regression function basis which
coefficients are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation.
Our approach is to give an approximation scheme via the representation
for the solution (Y, Z) of the Backward SDE. We suggest a pseudo approx-
imation scheme then an explicit discretization scheme, and we calculate
the L2 error induced to these approximations.
