RÉSUMÉ. - Étant donné un vecteur w E RI, on définit la suite Ti
des périodes de w comme la suite des temps de meilleur retour près de
l’origine de la translation x ~ x + 03C9 sur le tore I" . On étudie comment
les propriétés diophantiennes du vecteur w peuvent être exprimées à l’aide
de la suite des périodes. Plus précisément, on montre que si le vecteur w
est non résonant, et si ses périodes vérifient l’inégalité Ti+1  CT1+03C4i
avec 03C4  (n - 1 ) -1, alors le vecteur w est diophantien.
ABSTRACT. - Given a vector w E Rn, the sequence Ti of periods is
defined as the sequence of times of best returns near the origin of the
translation x ~ x + w on the torus Yn. In the present paper, we study
how the Diophantine properties of w can be expressed considering the
sequence of its periods. More precisely, we prove that, if the vector w is
not resonant, and if the sequence of periods satisfy the inequality Ti+1 
CT1+03C4i with 7  (n - 1)-1, then the vector w is Diophantine.

0. Introduction
Soit 03C9 un vecteur de Iaen. On note T’ le tore (R/Z)’, et tw : TI TI le
difféomorphisme x ~ x + cv. On s’intéresse au système dynamique discret
engendré par t03C9. On dit que 03C9 est résonant si il existe 03BA E Z’ tel que le
produit scalaire (w, k) est entier (E Z). Dans ce cas, le tore yn est fibré en
tores de plus petite dimension invariants par tw . Sinon, on dit que w est
non résonant, et tw est uniquement ergodique et minimal, c’est-à-dire que
T’ est le seul compact non vide invariant par tW, et que la mesure de Haar
est la seule mesure de probabilité invariante.

Il est très utile en théorie de la moyennisation (théorie KAM par exem-
ple) de quantifier le caractère non résonant de w. Le plus simple consiste à
minorer les « petits diviseurs » d(k, w), Z), k E Zn. On parle alors de pro-
priétés diophantiennes linéaires. Cette approche est assez naturelle, car les
petits diviseurs apparaissent directement au dénominateur des coefficients
des séries de perturbation dans de nombreux problèmes. Intuitivement, ceci
revient a quantifier l’ergodicité de t03C9, mais le sens dynamique des petits
diviseurs n’est pas très clair.
On peut aussi mesurer la qualité de l’approximation de 03C9 par des vecteurs
rationnels, c’est-à-dire estimer d(Tw, zn), T E Z. On parle alors de pro-
priétés diophantiennes simultanées. Cette approche n’a été utilisée que beau-
coup plus récemment dans les problèmes de moyennisation, voir [2], où elle
permet une simplification remarquable du théorème de Nekhoroshev. On
peut enfin se restreindre à la suite des meilleures approximations de cv,
comme suggéré dans [2]. On définit pour ceci les périodes Tj(03C9) de w E Rn
en posant T0(w) = 1 et
Voir ci-après pour les notations. La croissance des périodes détermine de
manière très condensée les propriétés diophantiennes de VJ.
Un intérêt majeur de l’approximation simultanée est son caractère pro-
fondément dynamique. En effet, si l’on considère un homéomorphisme ~
d’un espace métrique et une orbite récurrente 0’ (x) de cet homéomorphisme,
on peut définir les écarts d(on (x), x) et les périodes Ti de cette orbite par
To = 1 et
Ces définition coïncident avec les notions vues au dessus lorsque 0 est la
translation sur le tore de vecteur w.
La correspondance précise entre les différents types de propriétés dio-
phantiennes n’est pas immédiate, bien que ces propriétés soient visiblement
de même nature. Nous rappelons ici le très classique théorème de transfert
de Khintchine, et l’étendons aux propriétés diophantiennes définies en terme
de croissance des périodes, qui n’avaient pas été étudiées jusqu’ici. Cet ar-
ticle doit beaucoup à mes conversations avec Pierre Lochak sur le lien entre
les méthodes de perturbation par approximation simultanées développées
dans [2] et la théorie KAM. Je tiens aussi a remercier Xavier Buff, qui m’a
suggéré une amélioration de la Propriété 1.3, ainsi que le referee pour sa
lecture attentive qui a permis de nombreuses améliorations du texte.

1. Théorèmes de Dirichlet
Il est utile pour fixer les idées de rappeler les deux résultats les plus
simples de l’approximation diophantienne. On pourra consulter [3] pour les
preuves.

2. Propriétés de transfert

03A9n(03C4) sont vides pour T  0, il en va évidemment de même des ensembles

propriété diophantienne linéaire, et que les éléments de Qn (T) satisfont une
propriété diophantienne simultanée. Dans cette note, on montre le

Lorsque n = 1, ces nombres sont dits de type constant. On déduit aussi
qu’une propriété diophantienne linéaire implique toujours une propriété dio-
phantienne simultanée. L’appartenance à 03A9n(03C4) n’implique cependant une
propriété diophantienne linéaire que si T  (n-1)-1. L’existence de ce seuil
sera expliquée dans la section 3.
Mentionnons que les inclusions suivantes, dues à Khintchine, sont bien
connues depuis longtemps (voir [2], [3]): Pour tout 03C4  0,

de transfert. On y réduit la preuve des deux nouvelles inclusions à celle la
Proposition 3.6.
3. Vecteurs rationnels et résonances
Le module de résonance de w, R(w), est l’ensemble des vecteurs k E Zn
pour lesquels k, 03C9&#x3E; E Z. On appelle ordre de résonance de 03C9 le rang de ce
sous groupe de Zn, c’est-à-dire le cardinal de ses bases. Le vecteur w est
dit résonant si son module de résonance n’est pas trivial, c’est-à-dire si son
ordre de résonance est non nul. 
Le vecteur w est dit rationnel si ses composantes sont rationnelles. Le
vecteur w est rationnel si et seulement si toutes les orbites des tw sont
périodiques. Elles ont alors toutes la même période, qui est le plus pe-
tit dénominateur commun des composantes de cv. Les vecteurs rationnels
sont les vecteurs maximalement résonants, c’est-à-dire ceux dont l’ordre de
résonance est n. En effet, tout module R de rang n contient le module TZn

pour une certain T. Les vecteurs ayant R pour module de résonance sont
donc nécessairement T-périodiques.
PROPOSITION 3.1. - Soit w un vecteur résonant d’ordre r. Il existe une
matrice A E Gin (Z) et une famille di, 1  i  r, d’entiers tels que di divise
di+1 et tels que

Démonstration 3.2. - Soit R le module de résonance de w. Considérons
une base k1,..., kr de R, et associons lui la matrice B à coefficients entiers

voir [1], théorème 3.8, il existe une matrice A E Gln(Z), une matrice C E

Remarque 3.3. - Tout sous groupe de Z’ n’est pas un module de résonan-
ce, et les invariants d’un module de résonance satisfont certaines contraintes.
En particulier, il est facile de vérifier que les invariants qui ne sont pas égaux
à 1 sont tous distincts : di = di+1 ~ di = 1.

Lorsque n = 1, un rationnel w = w/T (sous forme irréductible) de
grand dénominateur T a un comportement très proche d’un irrationnel en
ce sens que les points kw, k E Z sont bien répartis sur le cercle (ce sont
précisément les points de la forme LIT, ~ Z) . En dimension supérieure,
certains vecteurs périodiques de grande période se comportent essentielle-
ment comme des vecteurs non-résonants, et d’autres se comportent plutôt
comme des vecteurs résonants (par exemple le vecteur (0, 03C9/T) E R2). En
raison de la non compacité du groupe Gln(Z) pour n  2, il n’est pas possi-
ble de quantifier la présence effective ou non de résonances pour un vecteur
périodique w de grande période par des quantités invariantes par l’action
de Gln(Z). Par exemple, étant donné un vecteur w E R 2 l’algorithme des
fractions continues permet de trouver une suite (non bornée) An de matri-
ces de G12 (Z) et une suite de rationnels xn ~ Q tels que An(O, xn) ~ w
lorsque n tend vers l’infini.
Il est donc utile d’introduire la quantité
Pour illustrer son rôle, considérons un vecteur réel w et une suite d’approxi-
mations rationnelles wn /Tn de 03C9, où la période Tn tend vers l’infini. Il n’est
pas difficile de voir que la limite w est résonante si et seulement si la suitE
e(wn/Tn) est bornée. Notons que, pour un vecteur rationnel w/T de périodE
T, on a l’estimation
En effet, le théorème 1.1 donne l’existence d’un vecteur entier k tel que
|k|  T’l- et ~k, w/T&#x3E;~Z  1 /T, mais alors k E R(03C9/T). Réciproquement,
pour la plupart des vecteurs rationnels w/T de dénominateur T, e (w/T ) est
au moins de l’ordre de T1/(n+1). Ceci est rendu plus précis par la Propriété
3.4 ci-dessous. Les vecteurs périodiques pour lesquels la valeur e est grande
sont ceux dont l’orbite est constituée de points bien répartis sur le tore.
PROPRIÉTÉ 3.4. - Pour tout réel strictement positif T, la proportion de
vecteurs entiers w tels que
tend vers zero lorsque T tend vers l’infini.
Démonstration. - Nous allons majorer le nombre de points entiers w de
[0, T - 1 ] n tels qu’il existe un vecteur entier k vérifiant |k|  A et (k, w) =
Tl, l ~ Z. Pour chaque couple (k, 1) E Zn x Z, l’hyperplan k, w) = Tl
contient au plus T n-1 points entiers dans [0, T - 1]n. Par ailleurs, pour un

vecteur entier k donné, le nombre d’entiers 1 tels que l’hyperplan k, w) = Tl
intersecte [0, T - 1]’ est au plus n(2lkl + 1), puisque |k, w&#x3E;| m|l||w|. Le
nombre de couples (k, l) E Z’ x Z vérifiant |k|  A et tels que l’hyperplan
d’équation k, w ) = Tl intersecte [0, T-1]n est donc inférieur à n(2A+1)n+1.
Il y a donc au plus 
points entiers w dans [0, T - 1]n tels que e{w/T)  A. On termine alors la

En ne retenant d’un vecteur rationnel que sa période T, on perd donc
une information essentielle. Par exemple, la suite des distances ~T(03C9,0)~Z,
T E Z, associée au vecteur (03C9, 0) E Rn+1 est la même que la suite ~T03C9~Z
associée à w, alors que le vecteur (03C9, 0) est fortement résonant et engendre
des orbites très mal réparties dans T’+’. De la même façon, la suite des
périodes Ti(03C9, 0) est la même que celle de w. Il est remarquable qu’une simple
connaissance de la suite ~T03C9~Z puisse suffire à déterminer le caractère non
résonant de w. Il n’est pas possible de tirer ce caractère non résonant d’une
connaissance de la suite des périodes. Pourtant, si l’on suppose à priori le
vecteur 03C9 non résonant, on montre que certaines estimées sur la croissance
des périodes permettent de déduire des propriétés diophantiennes linéaires
vérifiées par w. Cette remarque, à ma connaissance nouvelle, fait l’objet de
la proposition 3.6, qui sera démontrée dans la section suivante.
PROPRIÉTÉ 3.5. - Pour tout T  (n - 1)-1, les vecteurs de On (T) sont
non résonants.
Ce résultat est bien sur impliqué par les inclusions de Khintchine . Nous
allons cependant en donner une preuve élémentaire. Considérons un vecteur
résonant w. D’après 3.1, il existe une matrice A E SLn(Z) telle que Aw =
(03C9’, 03C9/p) E Rn-1 x Q, (w, p) E Z2. Appliquons le théorème de Dirichlet à

4. Démonstration de la proposition 3.6

R,ESUME. - Nous donnons de nouvelles classes d’unicite pour les so-
lutions faibles des equations de Navier-Stokes en dimension trois. Ces
résultats étendent ceux de Prodi, Serrin, Sohr et von Wahl a des espaces
de type (H~,(S2))3) pour des valeurs de q dans )1,2).
ABSTRACT. - We give some new class of uniqueness for the weak solu-
tions of the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. This extends the
results of Prodi, Serrin, Sohr and von Wahl concerning this problem to
some spaces of the type Lq([O, T], with q in )1,2).
1. Introduction and main results
We consider the uniqueness problem for the weak solutions of the Navier-
Stokes equations

Since the works of Prodi [P], Serrin [S], Sohr and von Wahl [SW] it is well
known that there exists a tight relation between the uniqueness problem and
the regularity problem for the weak solutions of (NS). Indeed, the existence
of one weak solution satisfying some suitable regularity properties would
imply the uniqueness of weak solutions of (NS). More precisely, if there
exists one weak solution in T’~, with 2/q + 3/p - 1, 2 
q  +00, then this solution is the unique weak solution of (NS). This result
was first proved in [P] and extended in [S] to the dimension d =~ 4 when
2/q + 4/p = 1, 2 x q  +00. The generalization to arbitrary dimensions
was given in [SW] (2/q + d/p = 1, 2 ~ q  +oo) where the authors also
considered the exceptional case of weak solutions in T~ .
We refer also to the recent papers [FLR] and for different proofs of
the well-posedness of (NS) in T ~ , (L~ (II~3 ) ) 3 ) with initial data a E
(L~(R~))~ and to [GP] for a weak-strong uniqueness result for initial data
in {L2(~3))3 n ($r~q+3/’’(~3))3 with 3/r -I- 2/q > 1 ($T~q+3~T (~3) being a
Besov space).
In this paper our aim is to obtain similar uniqueness results for some
other classes of weak solutions. We consider some classes of weak solutions
which are more regular in space but less integrable in time than in [P],
[S], [SW] and we prove that they are also some classes of uniqueness. In
particular, we obtain that if there exists a weak solution u of (NS) such that
u and ~~c belong to T~, (Lp(S2))3) with 2/q + 3/p = 2, 1  q  o0
then u is the unique weak solution of (NS).
In the rest of this section we recall first some notations and definitions.
Next, in Theorem 1, we recall the results of Prodi, Serrin, Sohr and von
Wahl concerning the uniqueness problem and then, in Theorem 2, we give
our main result.
Following some usual notation, for s integer HP (SZ) will denote the usual
Sobolev space and for non integer values of s, s = ( 1- 8) (l~ -~-1), 
is the complex interpolation space ~Hp (S~), (see [A] for further
details). For p = 2, we let = and Ho (S2) is the completion of
C°° (SZ) the set of smooth compactly supported functions in SZ with respect
to the usual norm of H1 (S2) . Also, will denote the set of vector fields
u = in (L2(0))3 such that = div u = 0 in For u and
v in (L2(SZ))3, (u, v) is the usual inner product of u and v and X* is the
dual space of X.
According to Leray’s definition [L], we will say that u is a weak solution
of the Navier-Stokes equations if u satisfies the following properties
(H 1) u is weakly continuous from R+ to E2 .

For all a in E2, there always exists such a weak solution, see [L] when
SZ = R~ and, among the huge literature on this subject, we refer to [T]
and [Li] for the existence of weak solutions in more general situations and
also for more references concerning (NS). The uniqueness of weak solutions
remains an open problem in the three-dimensional case but, as explained
previously, the existence of one weak solution with suitable regularity would
imply the uniqueness :
THEOREM 1 (Prodi, Serrin, Sohr, von Walh) . Let u and v be two
weak solutions of (NS) for the same initial data a E E2. . If
then u = v on ~0, T~. . Furthermore, C(~0, Z’~, (L3(SZ))3) is also a uniqueness
class.
Our aim is to prove the following extension of Theorem 1.

Remark 1. - Let u be a weak solution of (NS) and assume that u belongs
to T], (H~(SZ))3) with 2/q - s + 3/p = 1, s > 0. When s  3/p (i.e
when q > 2), by the Sobolev embedding theorem u fulfills condition (1)
of Theorem 1 and so u is the unique weak solution of (NS). Hence, when
s  3/p, Theorem 2 is just a corollary of Theorem 1. However, when 3/p  s,
then u belongs to T~, (Hp (S2) )3) with q E (1, 2) and our uniqueness
result can not be recovered from those of [P], [S] and [SW] which all required
q > 2. Thus, roughly speaking, Theorem 2 extends the uniqueness results of
Prodi, Serrin, Sohr and von Wahl to some classes of weak solutions which
are more regular in space but less integrable in time.
Remark 2. - From Theorem 1, L2 ( ~0, T], is also a uniqueness
class (this is one of the two borderline cases in Theorem 1 ) . Our correspond-
ing result is slightly different since we obtain that L2 ( ~0, T~ , (Hp ~p (SZ) ) 3 ) is
a uniqueness class. This result can not follow from Theorem 1 because the
embedding Hp~p (S2) ~--~ does not hold. ,
2. Proof of Theorem 2
The proof of Theorem 2 follows closely those given in [S], [SW] and [T]
(see also [G] and [FJR] for initial data in (I,p(SZ))3, 3). First we give a
differential inequality on the L2 norm of w(t) = v(t) - u(t) (see Proposition
1). Next, from this differential inequality and from some estimates on the
nonlinear term (see Proposition 2 and also Proposition 3), we
prove that w(t) - 0. For the convenience of the reader, we will give the
proofs of Proposition 1 and 2 in Section 3.
