Statistical evaluation provides an overview of basic statistical characteristics, including the interpretation of significant values. The article contains model of loading, which illustrates the problem of using average – normatively set values of acceleration coefficients when determining the inertial forces acting during transport

American Romanticism, Poe and “The Rationale of Verse”

    No full text
Although “The Philosophy of Composition” is usually referred to as Edgar Allan Poe’s best-known critical essay,“The Rationale of  Verse” can certainly be seen as his most elaborate. “Rationale” presents a consideration of the poem as a unit with elements that function together as a unique achievement of a single effect. In this essay Poe developed his “mathematical approach” to a poem in minute detail, emphasizing his proposition that verse is based on time as it is in music, not on accent. This paper will highlight Poe’s most significant ideas on versification and poetry as expressed in “The Rationale of Verse” as well as reveal the basic shortcomings of the essay, a text which can be said to represent the first significant American attempt at laying out the foundations for a modern science of English language verse

The present paper presents two documents controlling the course of the Bishopric Seminary and the Institute of Theology in Hradec Králové. The documents in question are Institutio seminarii episcopalis Reginae-Hradecensis, the statutes of the seminary issued by bishop Hermann Hannibal Blümegen in 1766, and Institutum seminarii episcopalis Reginæ-hradecii, the statutes created by bishop Tadeas M. Trautmannsdorf in 1802. Studying these normative sources can be a good starting point for our knowledge of the character and the life of the institution. Information on the clerical formation is extremely important for the period of Josephinism when the way and quality of the human life were significantly influenced by the clergy. The present paper presents two documents controlling the course of the Bishopric Seminary and the Institute of Theology in Hradec Králové. On the Difficulty of Refuting or Confirming the Arguments about the Caste System

    No full text
Any attempt to understand Indian society through the scholarship on caste confronts us with a large number of problems. Scholars of the last 150 years have routinely observed and even criticised writings on caste for these problems. Such criticisms, however, have neither led us towards a confirmation nor the abandonment of the so-called caste theories. How do we explain this curious fact? Caste scholars hold the complexity of the issue as responsible for the lack of a robust theory of the caste system. Hence, they set out to collect more facts in order to buttress the theory. More facts, however, create more problems. It is not only the quest for more data, which is expected to save the ‘theories’ of the caste system, but also a struggle to match the thus collected field data with the claims about the caste system that unites the colonial and modern writers on the caste system. This paper suggests that the failure of caste scholars to account for field data is not a result of the complexity of the field, but rather an outcome of the kind of entity that the ‘caste system’ is. The so-called caste system is an experiential entity of the West, which can neither be confirmed nor refuted by using empirical facts from India. Any attempt to do so will only generate unproductive debates.Any attempt to understand Indian society through the scholarship on caste confronts us with a large number of problems.
