The Youth of Early Modern Women
No full textThrough fifteen essays that work from a rich array of primary sources, this collection makes the novel claim that early modern European women, like men, had a youth. European culture recognised that, between childhood and full adulthood, early modern women experienced distinctive physiological, social, and psychological transformations. Drawing on two mutually shaped layers of inquiry — cultural constructions of youth and lived experiences — these essays exploit a wide variety of sources, including literary and autobiographical works, conduct literature, judicial and asylum records, drawings, and material culture. The geographical and temporal ranges traverse England, Ireland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, and Mexico from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. This volume brings fresh attention to representations of female youth, their own life writings, young women’s training for adulthood, courtship, and the emergent sexual lives of young unmarried women
Making a mark
No full textDuring the 2022 centenary celebrations of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), it became strikingly clear that the rich history and societal contributions of the Wits School of Construction Economics and Management (SCEM) had remained largely undocumented. This revelation sparked a comprehensive effort to uncover and preserve the School’s legacy – its origins, evolutions and impacts on the South African and global construction industry. While a handful of historical accounts had surfaced over the years – from JS Lewis’s 1953 retrospective and Monte Bryer’s 1976 faculty history, to Calderwood’s departmental reflection and Graeme Jay’s 2011 curriculum study – no complete narrative had yet captured the SCEM’s pivotal role in shaping Quantity Surveying and Building Science education in South Africa. In this landmark volume, three scholars at Wits set out to fill that void. Drawing on University archives, interviews with influential alumni and academics, and a deep analysis of the SCEM’s engagement with professional councils and industry stakeholders, they offer a detailed and compelling portrait of the School’s contributions to higher education and the built environment industry. This book stands as both a tribute to the visionary educators and students who shaped the SCEM and a vital record of Wits’ enduring and inculcating legacy in advancing knowledge, practice and transformation in the construction industry

No full textThe Symposium on Good Living from a Latin American Integration Perspective: An Interdisciplinary Approach was held within the framework of the VI Congress of Sciences, Technologies, and Cultures, organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Santiago, Chile, and the International Knowledge Network, in Santiago, Chile, from July 24 to 27, 2024. The general theme of the congress was quality of life in its multiple dimensions. The presentations at this symposium covered a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary topics related to the prevailing models of integration as they relate to the economic, legal, political, environmental, social, cultural, and historical realities and quality of life. The symposium addressed the unification of economic, legal, cultural, and international relations practices within a context of historical diversity, focusing on all currents of thought and the concept of good living from the perspective of Latin American integration, social relations, and possibilities for collaboration in history, law, sustainable economics, and other interdisciplinary sciences, emphasizing the importance of integration for the proper development of Latin America and the Caribbean. Contributing to a reflective evaluation of what has been achieved and what can be achieved in integration processes, institutional projects and with a perspective on quality of life. No full textThis Special Issue aims to address the concern that sustainable waste management, from the perspective of the Circular Economy (CE), can contribute to a just and sustainable post-fossil carbon society. The time has come for CE-based societies where responsible and sustainable ways of dealing with waste are implemented and pursued. A successful transition will require the planning, design, testing, and implementation of waste-based products that satisfy the three dimensions of sustainability or the 17 UN Sustainable Development Objectives. This Special Issue further contributes to the awareness that waste can be valorised as a zero-burden resource and sustainably transformed into value-added material and energy commodities. It has also allowed us to understand that CE principles can be applied to a wide range of sectors and issues and that there are several scientific-based methodologies, such as LCA and others. These methodologies were confirmed by the articles in this Special Issue to be highly effective in scientifically assessing the impacts of CE measures on the systems to which they are applied. Finally, this Special Issue confirmed the importance of academic research for assessing and stimulating the integrated sustainability of waste recovery systems from the perspective of the CE. In this way, this Special Issue may serve as a platform for advancing knowledge on new methodologies, practical applications, state-of-the-art analysis, findings, and lessons learned in such an important and current research field

En première année, l'ensemble de l'anatomie est abordé afin de donner une vue d'ensemble de l'architecture du corps humain. Lors des années suivantes, l'apprentissage de l'anatomie est approfondi suivant un découpage régional et basé sur une approche intégrant embryologie, histologie, physiologie et sémiologie. L'ouvrage donne une description schématisée des différents systèmes anatomiques tout en insistant sur leurs connections, l'approche est donc systémique avec une vision topographique. L'anatomie est progressivement construite en insistant sur l'observation et la description. Dans une première partie, les notions d'intelligence spatiale sont expliquées et les codes de la description et du langage anatomique sont précisés. Un aperçu de la formation embryologique de l'être humain permet de construire un schéma simple de l'architecture du corps humain. Dans la seconde partie, les différents systèmes anatomiques sont vus à partir de leur formation et en se basant sur une riche illustration originale, conçue en relation étroite avec le texte. Les liens sont évoqués avec l'anatomie microscopique, la physiologie voire la sémiologie.
