    Geospatial Technologies for Heritage Education

    No full text
This open access book shows that students, through geospatial technologies, learn the sustainable approach of heritage and also the heritage as a diversity of elements due to the complexity of physical, human, cultural, and artistic factors involved. The value of natural and cultural heritage, as part of collective heritage, can be acquired by geographic information systems (GIS) due to the multilayer approach of the spatial configuration. Proficiency in geospatial technologies to collect, process, analyze, interpret, visualize, and communicate geographic information is being increased by undergraduate and graduate students but, in particular, by those who are training to become geography, history, and art history teachers at the primary and secondary education levels. Some teaching experiences, using personalized learning, distance learning methodology, and GIS, focused on education aims to integrate students and enhance their understanding of the heritage are welcome. Opportunities offered by WebGIS in heritage education to learning research and teacher education research also fit with the scope of this book

    Rethinking Critical Race Theory

    No full text
This open access book outlines a framework to explain how a world system of white supremacy is reproduced through education at national and local levels. This contribution thus addresses the important need for critical race education scholarship that is not limited by nationally-framed or American-centric perspectives. Written in an accessible manner, the framework recognises that racism takes hold in diverse ways in local and national educational contexts, but is ultimately rooted in global white supremacy. Forging links between Critical Race Theory and decolonial thought, this framework explains how national racialized social systems are reproduced through global structures, knowledge, and feelings; and articulates how anti-racism in education relies on forging transnational solidarities. To illustrate the relevance and significance of this framework, the book engages with how educational systems throughout the world are implicated in sustaining global anti-Muslim racism in a time of Palestinian genocide. Addressing a timely topic and gap in the literature, this book will provide an invaluable resource to postgraduate students and academics developing critical scholarship that explains and resists the global nature of race and racism in education

Critical Perspectives on EdTech in Higher Education

    No full text
This open access book provides critical perspectives on educational technology (EdTech) platforms and platformisation in higher education. It focuses on three analytical dimensions: higher education actors’ struggles with the tension between autonomy from and dependence on EdTech platforms, the effects of platform features and platformisation on human interactions in higher education, and future scenarios and alternatives to dominant commercial paths. The book will appeal to academics interested in higher education digitalisation and digital teaching and learning, as well as higher education and educational technology practitioners

    Pragmatics in Contested Interpretation

    No full text
This open access book explores the mechanisms by which different audiences hearing the same comments made by the same speaker in the same context come to different interpretations as to the meanings behind them. The study uses a ‘pragmacognitive’ approach that fuses insights from sociopragmatics and critical discourse analysis to examine both the speaker’s intentions and the audience’s reactions. The authors explore the role and construction of context through a pragmacognitive analysis of two controversial utterances made by Donald Trump during the 2020 and 2024 presidential election campaigns and one controversial comment from President Joe Biden’s short-lived 2024 re-election campaign. They analyse in detail how these comments have been interpreted by those receiving their words within the wider political context of a highly politicised and divisive campaign, inferred by some to constitute problematic insulting behaviours and/or calls for violence while others have found them to be playful political critiques. The authors emphasise how indeterminate language, activity type conventions, and the respective identities and reality paradigms of the speakers contribute to creating varied audiences with ‘contested interpretations’. Contested interpretations are particularly apparent in cases where ambiguous, hyperbolic, or even metaphorical language is used to simultaneously conduct face-attack against individuals and organizations, and appeal to a political base of supporters. This book contributes to the growing body of scholarship in this area and will be of interest to a multidisciplinary audience including readers in linguistics, political rhetoric, and political discourse

Ökonomische versus strukturelle Rationalität im Kooperationsdilemma

    No full text

Precision Medicine in Africa: Promises and Opportunities

    No full text
The relevance of genomic medicine embodies using an individual's genomics and molecular genetic information to personalize treatment and predict drug response to ensure safer and more cost-effective therapies. An African framework for implementing genomic medicine was recently developed to highlight the elements required within the African context and provide some recommendations on how African countries can work on putting them in place by building on existing infrastructure. These measures would enable resource-limited countries to implement appropriate genomics-based health-related interventions, drawing on experiences from elsewhere but adapting to the African context where necessary. In developing the framework, the existing genomic medicine activities in Africa were investigated. This book aims to describe the current status of precision medicine and discuss the clinical studies related to precision medicine that have been conducted on African populations to improve healthcarein Africa. This book comprises three sections: infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and bioinformatics tools and resources. Each section is covered in several chapters, each dealing with a specific disease or group of diseases together with the necessary formalism. Based on existing literature, the collection summarizes Africa's state of the art of genomics and precision medicine activities. The book is helpful for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers; the secondary audience is students, funders, and healthcare staff. This is an open access book
