Narratives of Resilience / Narrative der Resilienz

    No full text

Since the 2010s, the thematisation of gender and sexual diversity has been increasingly combated. No full text
As the climate crisis worsens, governments around the world are calling for carbon-neutral societies and urging individuals to take responsibility for their climate-related behavior. However, despite growing awareness of the urgent need for climate action, meaningful change remains limited at the governmental and individual levels. This book presents bold and innovative approaches to addressing climate change, from social visions and sustainable business models to transformative shifts in environmental policy, law, and markets aimed at driving global progress toward net-zero emissions. The book covers topics ranging from everyday choices, such as meat consumption, to major systemic changes, such as the adoption of renewable energy. It offers a comprehensive look at how individuals, businesses, and governments can disrupt the current inertia surrounding climate behavior. By analyzing the cultural, economic, and political forces that shape environmental outcomes, the book provides a clear roadmap to carbon neutrality. It is a valuable resource for climate researchers, sustainability practitioners, and policymakers, while also inspiring engineers and technology developers to create the tools needed for a greener, more sustainable future.

Managing Disruption and Developing Resilience for a Better Southeast Asia

    No full text
This open access book, stemming from the biennial Consortium for Southeast Asian Studies in Asia conference, confronts numerous contemporary issues in the Southeast Asia region, under the banner of the 2022 theme “Managing Disruption, Developing Resilience for a Better Southeast Asia.” Providing a platform for discussion and collaboration in the fields of sociology, education, population studies, cultural studies, public health, international relations, and other humanities and social science disciplines, the range of interdisciplinary chapters focus their critical analyses vis-à-vis the interpellation of economic, social, historical, artistic, cultural, religious, and political viewpoints. Organized into three sections, the first looks at new models of economic development, the challenges to education quality, the labor market in the digital era, and the demographic changes and critical issues facing both the young and elderly in the region. The second examines disasters as a future challenge for risk management, understandings of contemporary society and culture, the digital humanities, social development in the time of COVID-19, and identities in relation to religion, minorities, and social harmony. The final section addresses diaspora, migration, the region in the pandemic, citizenship and human security, democracy, and human rights, as well as foreign policy, diplomacy, and state sovereignty in Southeast Asia. As ASEAN comes of age, there has never been a more compelling need to provide region-based perspectives to complement the deepening economic, social, and cultural integration in the region. For scholars working on Southeast Asia, “area” matters in geopolitical, economic, intellectual, institutional, social, cultural, and affective terms, and so this book transports the study of Southeast Asia from the periphery to the center, so as to enable scholars who live in and research the region to bring their research to a global readership. Relevant to scholars, public intellectuals, policy-makers, and activists working in all areas of the social sciences and humanities, this comprehensive book presents the very latest research on, and from, Southeast Asia

A New Wave of Anti-Racism in Europe?

    No full text
This open access book provides a way to understand the current manifestations of anti-racism in Europe, including changes that became particularly visible with the Black Lives Matter related protests beginning in May 2020. The so-called ‘new' anti-racism is often described as being led by racialized minorities themselves, foregrounding structural racism, and drawing connections between contemporary racism and the colonial past. But are these features truly new? And can we speak of a new 'wave' of anti-racism, and what does wave-thinking clarify or obscure? The chapters in this volume explore anti-racist struggles and practices across a range of European contexts, tracing both change and continuity over time. They illuminate how several features of antiracism, now considered distinctive - including the leadership by racialized minorities, have deep roots, though they were pushed to the margins, unrecorded or silenced by the mainstream. Today, these voices are beginning to rise, echoing -sometimes modestly - in the centre. By providing a solid empirical portrait of current and past anti-racist movements in different parts of Europe, this book is a vital resource for students and scholars of race, anti-racism and migration in Europe, as well as for activists and policy-makers navigating the evolving terrain of anti-racist thought and action

Public Involvement and Community Engagement in Applied Health and Social Care Research

    No full text
The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and freely available to read online. This edited collection brings academics, researchers and practitioners/public from a range of subject and discipline areas together with a view to providing insight into critical concerns and innovative practices on the process of developing and delivering Public Involvement and Community Engagement (PICE work) in a range of research settings. Delivering powerful reflections and insights from professional groups, marginalised communities and people with lived experience as research partners/participants each chapter will present from “real life” illustrative practice examples and each will engage in a sympathetic critical appraisal of a concern or innovation. Chapters will also provide methodological, theoretical and practice insight into the process of PICE work and each will explore the implications and lessons that can be learned in and across different subject and discipline areas. It is important to recognize here that this is a collection of work that will call for intuitive and informed professional practice that creates space for individuals to reflect on their own practice (involvement) and how they consider, conceptualise, learn, manoeuvre, and position themselves in relation to “doing PICE work”. Bridging a lack of knowledge and concern about the more critical and innovative aspects of PICE work in relation to representation, epistemic injustice, positionality, ethically informed and sustainable practice, this is pioneering reading for those who are interested in or concerned with the ever-pertinent issue of public involvement and community engagement in applied research practice
