Towards the Olympian Gods
This book draws on extensive research into Baroque ceiling painting in Bohemia and Moravia. Three case studies of residential decoration present different representational strategies used by 17th century noblemen. Emphasis is placed on the way that social changes brought about by the Thirty Year’s War and the Battle of White Mountain altered the historical circumstances of artistic patronage in Central Europe. The formal models inspiring 17th century artistic production are explored in detail – the influence and appropriation of sources from Italy, France, the Low Countries and Central Europe – and it is shown that appropriation was never mere imitation, but was mediated by the representational strategies of the nobility in specific historical circumstances

The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing

Effects of Ionizing Radiation in Cancer Radiotherapy
For a long time, it was widely accepted that the biological effects of ionizing radiation such as cell death, DNA damage, and mutagenesis result from the direct ionization of cell structures, particularly DNA, or from indirect damage through reactive oxygen species produced by water radiolysis. This “targeted effect” (TE) model has been questioned by numerous observations, in which cells, that were not directly irradiated, exhibited responses similar to those of directly irradiated cells. Therefore, it is now accepted that the detrimental effects of ionizing radiation are not restricted only to irradiated cells, but also to non-irradiated adjacent or distant cells. The non-targeted effects (NTEs) of ionizing radiation, which include genomic instability, radiation-induced bystander effects, and abscopal effects, are defined as the occurrence of biological effects in non-irradiated cells because of the irradiation of other cells in the population. In opposition with TE, that display a linear dose–response, NTEs exhibit a non-linear dose–response, with a marked effect at low doses of radiation. The related cellular and molecular mechanisms of NTEs are still not completely understood, as they are mainly dependent on the cell type and the radiation quality.
