Fighting for a Living
No full textFighting for a Living investigates the circumstances that have produced starkly different systems of recruiting and employing soldiers in different parts of the globe over the last 500 years. It does so on the basis of a wide range of case studies taken from Europe, Africa, America, the Middle East and Asia. The novelty of Fighting for a Living is that it is not military history in the traditional sense (concentrating at wars and battles or on military technology) but that it looks at military service and warfare as forms of labour, and at the soldiers as workers. Military employment offers excellent opportunities for this kind of international comparison. Where many forms of human activity are restricted by the conditions of nature or the stage of development of a given society, organized violence is ubiquitous. Soldiers, in one form or another, are always part of the picture, in any period and in every region. Nevertheless, Fighting for a Living is the first study to undertake a systematic comparative analysis of military labour. It therefore speaks to two distinct, and normally quite separate, communities: that of labour historians and that of military historians

No full textThis volume collects the contributions presented on the occasion of the conference In the Sign of Time: Archaeology through Alterations, Resistances, and Fractures, held in Padua on January 29–30, 2024, and organized by the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of the University of Padua. Now in its second edition, the conference proved to be a valuable opportunity for exchange and dialogue among postgraduate students in Archaeological Heritage from various Italian universities. The structure of the volume reflects that of the two days of the conference: the five sections offer a variety of perspectives useful for exploring the vast and diverse landscape of contemporary archaeology. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. Archaeological Research on Cultures in Northeast China from the Xia to the Warring States Period
No full textThis open access book mainly focuses on Northeast China, which historically included Heilongjiang Province, Jilin Province, Liaoning Province, and the eastern part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This area borders Mongolia to the west, the ocean to the south, the Korean Peninsula to the east by the Yalu River and the Tumen River, and Russia to the north by the Heilongjiang River and Ussuri River. In Northeast China, the period from the Xia to the Warring States was an important cultural stage between the Neolithic Age and the (Qin) Han and Wei dynasties. Since 1921, a wealth of archaeological data of this period has been gained through investigations and excavations by scholars from China and abroad. This treasure trove of data covers a considerable timespan and broad geographic area. Accordingly, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis to distill valuable archaeological insights from materials unearthed throughout the Northeast. This book breaks down the chronological coordinates of archaeological cultures during the Xia and Warring States period into seven natural geographic regions, namely the Nenjiang River basin in the Northeast; the mountainous area of Liaoxi; the Liaoxi Plain; southern Liaodong; northern Liaodong; the Second Songhua River basin; and the Tumen River basin. Further, it pursues a multi-dimensional approach: grouping individual sites and cemeteries, categorizing multiple sites and cemetery groups, and identifying the period division and chronological sequence of the archaeological cultures. Based on a comparison and integrated studies of these seven coordinates, we identify four archaeological periods: the Xia-Shang period, the late Shang period, the Western Zhou to Spring and Autumn period, and the Warring States period
Rural-Urban Migration and Agro-Technological Change in Post-Reform China
No full textHow do rural Chinese households deal with the conflicting pressures of migrating into cities to work as well as staying at home to preserve their fields? This is particularly challenging for rice farmers, because paddy fields have to be cultivated continuously to retain their soil quality and value. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and written sources, Rural-Urban Migration and Agro-Technological Change in Post-Reform China describes farming households' strategic solutions to this predicament. It shows how, in light of rural-urban migration and agro-technological change, they manage to sustain both migration and farming. It innovatively conceives rural households as part of a larger farming community of practice that spans both staying and migrating household members and their material world. Focusing on one exemplary resource - paddy fields - it argues that socio-technical resources are key factors in understanding migration flows and migrant-home relations. Overall, this book provides rare insights into the rural side of migration and farmers' knowledge and agency

No full textThis topic aims to provide new research results on the composition design of alloys, material processing technology, novel composites, and coatings in order to improve the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of ocean materials to meet the extreme marine environment. As is well known, with the development and exploration of marine resources and marine new energy, the research on underwater robots, submarines, and marine new energy equipment is increasing. However, high-performance materials are necessary for the safe service of marine equipment, which constrains the development of marine equipment. For example, for steel structure submarines, their working environment covers corrosive areas of the ocean (atmospheric area, splash area, tidal range area and full immersion area, etc.) and involves interaction with multiple strong fields such as the fluid field, temperature field, stress field and electromagnetic field. The issues of corrosion, fatigue and other failure behaviors in shell, frame, pipeline and other parts result in a decrease in the strength of the steel structure, and can even lead to accidents. Therefore, research studies on the corrosion behavior and protection methods of high-performance alloys and composite materials are becoming more and more important.
