Targeting Oxidative Stress for Disease
No full textOxidative stress (OS), representing an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the body’s antioxidant defense systems, is a critical factor in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases, including neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, as well as cancer and cardiovascular and inflammatory conditions. The Special Issue, “Targeting Oxidative Stress for Disease”, brings together recent findings exploring the contribution of ROS and disturbed redox balance in disease development and progression, as well as potential approaches to counteract their effects. Highlighted topics include the impact of OS on neurodevelopment and psychiatric conditions, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), where OS markers may serve as early diagnostic tools or therapeutic targets. Studies featured in this Special Issue investigate the regulatory role of circular RNAs in response to OS during neuronal differentiation, and the contribution of ferroptosis to ASD pathology. Furthermore, this issue addresses the dual roles of neuropsychiatric medications in modulating redox balance and emphasizes the need for rigorous clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory interventions. This Special Issue advances our understanding of OS-related pathophysiology and paves the way toward innovative redox-based therapeutic approaches
Critical Health Communication
No full textThis book offers strong rationales for adopting a critical view of health communication by demonstrating how theories and critical practices can be enriched by foregrounding issues of power, politics, and culture. In health communication, critical approaches highlight the role of communication in constituting, reinforcing, and resisting inequitable power relations that underlie the sociocultural and structural barriers to well-being. This book highlights the theoretical and practical contributions of critical health communication to allow readers to gain in-depth understanding of the tools and methods required to conduct critical research. It includes a broad array of approaches to health communication scholarship such as rhetorical, feminist, anti-racist, and intersectional perspectives. Chapters present research from a variety of international and local contexts addressing medical and public health challenges and center issues of power, resistance, voice, and social change from marginalized perspectives. Outlining the centrality of critical approaches to theorizing and practicing health communication in more equitable, ethical, and effective ways, this book will be of interest to scholars and graduate students in health communication, critical and cultural communication, as well as other health-related courses. Japan’s Humanitarian Aid Toward Myanmar After the 2021 Coup
No full textThis open access book delves into Japan's humanitarian aid efforts in Myanmar following the military coup of February 2021. As Myanmar faces political upheaval and growing humanitarian challenges, Japan's response has been notable, yet intricate, maneuvering through obstacles created by the Myanmar military's weaponization of aid. Utilizing document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and fieldwork conducted at the Myanmar-Thailand border, this book explores four key channels through which Japan delivers humanitarian assistance: UN organizations, Myanmar-based NGOs, Thailand-based NGOs, and Bangladesh-based NGOs. Each channel is examined in detail, highlighting the strategies employed, obstacles faced, and impact of Japan’s contributions on the ground. This study illuminates the precarious equilibrium between delivering crucial aid and addressing the political circumstances that hinder humanitarian endeavors. It also prompts important discussions about the morality of providing assistance in conflict-ridden areas and the responsibilities of donor nations in upholding their human rights. This book is ideal for academics, decision-makers, and humanitarian professionals, and not only enlightens readers about Japan's distinctive position in Myanmar, but also contributes to wider debates on international aid dynamics in politically fraught environments

No full textThe here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing

It examines the tension between the right to access and the notion of ownership, with particular focus on the digital dissemination of images. The role of technologies such as artificial intelligence in the creation and circulation of images raises critical issues, exemplified by the cases of Michelangelo’s David and the Vitruvian Man. The need emerges for recognizing a subjective right to immaterial access, balancing the protection of authenticity with collective enjoyment of cultural heritage
