Phase Change, Interphase Coupling, and Multiphase Transport in Porous Structures
No full textMultiphase flows and phase-change phenomena are often encountered in many engineering systems, such as CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage); the exploitation of oil, natural gas, and other underground resources; the utilization of geothermal energy and hydrogen energy, etc. Multiphase flows refer to the interactive flow of distinct phases, and each phase discriminated by common interfaces in a channel represents a mass or volume of matter. Multiphase flows can occur in single-component or multi-component systems. Possible phase combinations in our Reprint include the following: solid–liquid–gas, where solid particles and gas bubbles are mostly dispersed in liquid; solid–gas, solid–liquid, and liquid–gas, where the volume fraction of one phase is relative to other results for different flow regimes; and phase change and miscibility phenomena involved in a combination of the above. We hope that our Reprint will act as a guide for researchers and engineering technicians

No full textThe here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing

No full textIm Hochmittelalter als Reformorden gegründet, fanden die Zisterzienser in der Forschung zum frühneuzeitlichen Katholizismus bisher wenig Beachtung. Am Beispiel der Klöster St. Urban und Wettingen zeigt Lukas Camenzind auf, dass sich die Zisterzienser im konfessionellen Zeitalter geschickt an die neuen politischen und religiösen Verhältnisse anpassten. Durch weitgespannte Netzwerke, einen flexiblen Umgang mit Observanz und überraschend pragmatisches politisches Handeln gelang es den Äbten und Mönchen, in einem von Konfessionskonflikten geprägten Raum ihre Eigenständigkeit zu behaupten und einen Ausgleich mit der römischen Kurie zu finden. Die eigentümliche Symbiose von religiöser Erneuerung und korporativem Eigensinn steht beispielhaft für die innere Vielfalt des frühneuzeitlichen Katholizismus

Transitioning to Climate Action
No full textGiven all insight from climate science, it has become obvious that the only viable path forward is transitioning to an economy that lives off our planet’s regeneration, rather than its liquidation. We now need to start becoming regenerative. Current trends, however, such as still increasing fossil fuel emissions, indicate that humanity is on the slowest, and ultimately most destructive and costliest, path. Barriers to change may include financial interests, inadequate decision-making, or warped incentives. But there are also cognitive obstacles, such as a failure of climate communication to mobilize sufficient enthusiasm to solve the problem. Most communication overemphasizes personal sacrifice, failing to ignite individuals’ and institutions’ desire for change. Much communication, furthermore, has a moralistc undertone, or is at least perceived as finger-pointing, hardening the emotional resistance. This messaging is counterproductive: Climate action is not noble, but necessary. Without rapid shifts in perception and public desire for decision-making that embraces our one-planet context, runaway climate change and biodiversity loss is inevitable. Drawing on a canon of voices from academia, international institutions, governments, businesses, foundations working on climate change, and civil society, Transitioning to Climate Action follows the conviction that we need to stop waiting for others to act first. Thus, given the clarity of the challenge, this volume aims to discuss the possibilities which indeed exist to succeed with the transformation set out by the Paris Agreement and its climate goals. Transitioning to Climate Action is part of MDPI's new Open Access book series Transitioning to Sustainability. With this series, MDPI pursues environmentally and socially relevant research which contributes to efforts toward a sustainable world. Transitioning to Sustainability aims to add to the conversation about regional and global sustainable development according to the 17 SDGs. No full textThis Special Issue presents the current state of research activities concerning vehicle design processes. The design of vehicles is one of the most challenging tasks in engineering for several reasons. For example, high consumer expectations as well as intensive global competition impact vehicle design. Recent dramatic changes have influenced vehicle design, primarily due to the transition to electric drive systems and new vehicle application scenarios, especially in the Asian market. Cost-driven design is a necessity, and vehicles need to be economical in their production, operation, and recycling; in fact, sustainable design is also imperative for eco-friendly vehicles . The dynamics of vehicles must be considered in the design of all components, and lightweight design is of fundamental importance. Consumers expect strong functional performance, high product quality, an attractive appearance, high reliability, and interconnected functionality, as well as comprehensible and appealing user interfaces. More and more additional services are being integrated into vehicles. The strict requirements lead to the complex multi-domain design processes of vehicles, since most of the significant decisions are made in the design phase. Production optimization and intelligent operation are also important, but flaws and insufficiencies in the design stage lead to enormous expenditures in later stages and less-than-perfect products. The design processes of vehicles involve thousands of engineers spread across the globe who need to consider multiple product versions and variants, as well as multi-company product platforms

Als einer der letzten komponierenden Dirigenten seiner Generation vereinte er Tradition, Avantgarde und Aufbruch in die Moderne wie kein anderer: Er lernte bei Johannes Brahms und Gustav Mahler, war begeisterter Wagnerianer und förderte zugleich Arnold Schönberg, Anton Webern und Alban Berg.
Diese Studie widmet sich erstmalig dem Schaffen des Interpreten Zemlinsky – von den Anfängen seiner Karriere in Wien bis zum großen Erfolg in Prag.
