Strategie di ripartenza: uscire dalle crisi nel mondo romano

    No full text
The concept of 'crisis' has had a great importance in contemporary language, and not only in the political field. In the study of the Roman world, this concept has been applied in different ways to many historical periods, perceived as moments of fundamental and at the same time traumatic transition. Inspired by the recent contingency, the conference held at the University of Milan in May 2022, the proceedings of which are collected here, placed the 'crisis' of the Roman world at the centre of reflections and interventions. The aim was to highlight the strategies implemented by Rome to overcome specific emergencies, that is, the responses that the community, both as a whole and in its various parts, was able to find when faced with particularly difficult circumstances. At the heart of this book, therefore, are the reactions, compromises and metamorphoses that enabled Rome to start again after moments when its unity and survival seemed threatened.

Advances in the Science of Mating, Love, and Attachment in Romantic Relationships

    No full text
In recent decades, researchers have made notable advances in the science of pair bonding, romantic love, and attachment. Access to novel instruments and methods—including fMRI, EEG, and virtual reality—as well as animal studies, has provided a platform to advance our understanding of the factors and mechanisms that underly the formation and maintenance of pair bonds and other attachment relationships. From short to long-term pair bonds, the great variation in relationship strategies has opened up important areas of research. Thus, this Special Issue, entitled "The Advances in the Science of Mating, Love, and Attachment", showcases the emerging and evolving field of relationship science, including a collection of studies that examine romantic relationships through a new lens or build upon existing work. The resulting collection includes 12 peer-reviewed articles, representing seven countries that examine a range of topics on the science of love and attachment, using a variety of methods—including virtual reality, EEG, and Q methodology. Collectively, the works in this Special Issue highlight the richness of relationship science representing countries around the globe, various methods, and topics that reveal the complexity of love and attachment in our species. This Special Issue also marks a goal met of casting a wide net, resulting in a collection of studies that expand borders and broaden our understanding of human relationships around the globe

The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing

Foucault hoje: Novas Perspetivas na Filosofia e Ciência da Cultura

    No full text
Publishe

Incremental and Innovative Approaches to Professional Development for Mathematics Teachers

    No full text
Professional development researchers and teacher educators have been striving to improve mathematics instruction for decades, but in many places, there has been an inertia of procedurally focused mathematics instruction that has been incredibly resistant to change. Even when specific professional development (PD) efforts have found success in certain contexts or with certain teachers, it has proven difficult to sustain and disseminate these instructional improvements on a broader scale. This Special Issue on PD for mathematics teachers includes contributions reflecting on the limitations of transformational PD (PD that seeks profound changes in mathematics instruction) and studies on innovative and incremental approaches to PD striving to make instructional changes more manageable for teachers in their busy lives and complex educational contexts, and perhaps thus more likely to sustain and spread. Some of the featured research on incremental PD breaks down transformational practices into specific pieces, whereas other studies provide teachers with choices of smaller facets of teaching upon which to focus. Overall, this Special Issue urges the field to consider how incremental approaches to PD for mathematics teachers might address some of the limitations of typical transformational efforts

    Bedřich Smetana and European Opera

    No full text
Bedřich Smetana had a lasting influence on Czech opera history from the 1860s. As conductor at the Prozatímní divadlo (Provisional Theater) and as the composer of eight operas including Prodaná nevěsta (The Bartered Bride) and Libuše, he championed Czech musical life in Prague throughout his life. How Smetana managed the balancing act between artistic ambition and practical possibilities with his operas is the subject of this volume. The aim is to place the composer and his stage works in the context of both European operatic practice and the institutional framework and political debates in Prague in the second half of the 19th century. In the three-part conception, Smetana’s operatic aesthetics, which are to a large extent influenced by his experiences as a conductor at the Prozatímní divadlo, contemporary music theory, theatre practice and political ideals, take first place (Martin Nedbal, Arne Stollberg, Ivana Rentsch, Thomas Jaermann, Brian S. Locke). This will be followed by a second thematic area, the contemporary European opera repertoire in the Habsburg Empire and Smetana’s engagement with it in the surviving sources (Axel Körner, Olga Mojžíšová, Sandra Bergmannová, Milan Pospíšil). As a counterpart to Smetana’s European opera reception, the third part discusses the early reception of Smetana in Europe and beyond (David Brodbeck, Vincenzina Ottomano, Christopher Campo-Bowen, Michael Beckerman).Publishe

Effect of Dietary Supplementation on the Growth and Immunity of Fish and Shellfish—2nd Edition

    No full text
With the development of the aquatic feed industry, new feedstuff and feed additives have been developed, but their roles in the growth and immunity of different aquaculture animals remain to be examined. In addition to essential nutrients, feedstuffs and feed additives must contain some biologically active constituents to support fish growth and wellness. However, some also have adverse effects on growth performance through introducting undesirable materials. This Special Issue focuses on the application of feedstuffs and additives in aquaculture species’ growth and immunity, especially recently developed feedstuff and additives

    Crip Authority

    No full text
Crip Authority explores how Renaissance writers and artists with disabilities drew on consolatory literature to enhance their authority and create a sense of disability community across the centuries. Elizabeth B. Bearden considers how Renaissance writers and artists understood their lived experiences of disability by drawing on the ancient genre of consolation, which aims to comfort people for a variety of hardships, including mental and physical disability. Renaissance writers used the art of consolation to resignify the mental and physical disabilities that their society frequently scorned into an expression of their military, spiritual, political, and most importantly for this study, writerly authority. Bearden names this kind of defiant authorial self-representation crip authority, thereby transgressively cripping our society’s ableist notions of who has the ability and authority to write. Disabled authors include Francesco Petrarca, Teresa de Cartagena, Giovani Paolo Lomazzo, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Robert Burton, and John Milton. They all explore their experiences of disability, but their work has rarely or never been considered from a disability studies perspective. Bearden thus brings today’s models of disability studies and crip theory together with early modern articulations of disability based on ancient and Renaissance models of military, political, biblical, and literary authority. In sum, Crip Authority makes a significant contribution to the growing field of early modern disability studies and invites us to rethink the extent of crip history and the endurance of disability gain
