Axonometría paso a paso. Ejercicios resueltos
This work brings together a set of studies in homage to Maria do Céu Fialho, Hellenist, professor and researcher at the University of Coimbra. The structuring axis of these two volumes is Peace and War. Around this binomial are organized reflections by specialists from different scientific fields: Ancient Greece and Rome, but also other areas such as History and Philosophy, Literature and Reception Studies, Religion and Politics. The contributions focus on themes as diverse as creation, love and celebration, or destruction, power and violence. Human ambivalence and complexity, metonymically represented by the hands, traverses the cultural and historical contexts of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, through to the Modern and Contemporary periods.
The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing
But There Was Love
But There Was Love—Shaping the Memory of the Shoah proposes a new paradigm for Shoah remembrance in today’s cultural and political reality. It derives from the four-year workings of a group of researchers and artists in Jerusalem led by Michal Govrin. The group positions the extraordinary Jewish and human struggle in facing dehumanization and extermination as the essence of the Shoah, challenging us with a profound ethical call
Robust Statistics Through the Monitoring Approach
This open access book presents robust statistical methods and procedures through the monitoring approach, with an emphasis on applications to linear regression. Illustrating the theory, it explores both large and small-sample properties. The performance of the forward search and of the monitoring of static robust estimators for regression data are illuminated through numerous data analyses using MATLAB and R. The book describes the results of many years’ work of the authors in the development of powerful methods of robust regression analysis. Robust methods are designed to analyse contaminated data. The well-established static robust methods estimate model features, such as parameter estimates, assuming the amount of contamination in the data is known. These methods are described in detail in Chapter 2 for estimation in a simple sample. The extension to regression is presented in Chapter 3, with an emphasis on S-estimation and related procedures as well as on least trimmed squares. The monitoring methods of Chapter 4, including the forward search, find the appropriate level of robustness for each data set and so avoid biased estimation from the inclusion of outliers and inefficiency due to the deletion of uncontaminated observations. This analysis is followed by examples which illustrate the use of the interactive graphical analyses associated with the authors’ FSDA toolbox. Numerical comparisons of the size and power of outlier tests appear in Chapter 5. Later chapters illustrate applications to response transformation in regression and to non-parametric regression. Extensions of the robust multiple regression model include Bayesian, heteroskedastic, time series and compositional regression, together with the clustering of regression models. Finally, several approaches to model selection are investigated and robust analyses of regression data are presented that illustrate the use of the techniques introduced earlier. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter, with solutions at the end of the book. The MATLAB code can be reproduced using MATLAB Online, without the need for a license, or via the language-agnostic Jupyter notebook environment, after installing the MATLAB kernel. Online computer code is available for all examples and exercises, together with a series of YouTube videos. Aimed at professional statisticians and researchers concerned with insightful data analysis, as well as postgraduate students, the book may also serve as a text for a modern interactive robust regression course
The Biological Foundation of Sustainability
The ongoing climate change, rampant biodiversity loss, omnipresent pollution and waste accumulation around the world can no longer be overlooked or denied. As a consequence, "sustainability" has become a buzzword – but what does it actually mean when it comes to the details and practical action? What has to be "sustained"? Regine Hengge proposes a change of perspective: Instead of focusing on what Planet Earth can do for us, we should ask what we can do to make sure that the planetary biosphere will be able to continue to function and evolve with and for all its living inhabitants that depend on each other in this biosphere. She demands that to understand destructive human activity and successfully transform it into supportive and re-integrative action, we need to understand how the planetary biosphere operates, which in turn requires understanding its evolution
Trends in Emerging Markets, Globalization, Economic Development, Entrepreneurship and Management Strategies as a Result of Cross-Border Cooperation
As globalization advances, trends and societal shifts influence several economic and socioeconomic aspects. As cross-border cooperation has been increasing across various regions, this leads to market changes, both established and emerging, trading methods and management aspects. As a result, it is crucial to study the negative and positive changes on an economic and social level emanating from this phenomenon. The inter-relationship between international environments, transactions, and cooperation projects can transform economic and socioeconomic conditions, leading to more enabling and sustainable cities, societies, and regions. The results from new and stronger business networks and cluster environments created through cooperation projects, strategies, synergies, and transactions are already reshaping the socioeconomic panorama
Since 2008, more people worldwide have been living in cities than in rural areas and the end of this form of urbanization is far from imminent. This development began as early as the Renaissance with the conception of so-called Ideal Cities. However, only a small number of these were actually built, and their conception generally carried a utopian element. The present volume navigates the tension between the real urban world and utopian counter-designs. For the first time, it encompasses a broad range of literary visions of the city, alongside art historical, artistic, architectural, and environmental theoretical designs. The volume goes beyond mere urban motifs, such as Metropolis or Babylon in expressionist film or literature of the 1920s. The city is consistently examined here with a focus on the future and the possibilities of change and innovation
Chapter Christoph Pfautz as a Reviewer for the Acta Eruditorum: the Invention of a German Tradition in the Sciences
In 1682, Otto Mencke and Christoph Pfautz founded the Acta Eruditorum, the first fully-fledged German scientific journal. In this paper, I argue that this journal had a fundamental role in shaping the narrative on the rise of the new science in the 17th century, placing Germany as the ideal intermediary between tradition and innovation. In particular, Pfautz’s review of Newton’s Principia in the Acta Eruditorum initiated the Leibniz-Newton controversy, which forced the German tradition to reconsider its role and reshape its philosophical foundations to appeal to a wider international audience
