Japan in the Early Modern World
No full textOpen Access. Early modern transnational relations and personal encounters were influenced by interactions between Japan and the regions that had become connected to it through expanding global trade and missionary networks. Translation activities linked to Christian missionary activities, overseas trade, and political upheaval in these places all contributed to shaping these interactions. Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, this volume explores religion, translation, and transnational relations in the context of the colonial and missionary enterprises involving Japan, between 1550 and 1800. It focuses on the early Catholic mission to Japan, discussing both Protestant and local religious reactions to it, and the publications of the Jesuit mission press in Japan. A survey of the subsequent centuries of scholarly involvement with translational materials in Asian languages further suggests that translation had a formative influence on the intellectual world in the Early Modern period

No full textLiving Standards in Southeast Asia: Changes over the Long Twentieth Century, 1900-2015 examines changes in living standards across the ten countries of Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Brunei, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos) from the early years of the 20th century to the early 21st century. It covers both the last decades of the colonial period, the transition to independence and the decades from 1960 to the 2010s. The study uses a range of monetary and non-monetary indicators to assess how living standards have changed over time. It examines the outcomes in the context of debates about economic growth, inequality and poverty alleviation which began in the 1960s and 1970s, and continue to the present

Negocios inclusivos en la industria bananera
No full textInclusive business as a model at the base of the pyramid is a relatively recent area of study. From an institutional perspective, companies are influenced by norms, processes, and moral and ethical standards, which have not been extensively examined in the development of inclusive business models involving agricultural cooperatives. This research aims to identify institutions that can contribute to the development of inclusive agribusiness models. The study focuses on banana-producing agricultural cooperatives in Magdalena, Colombia, as the unit of analysis to identify such institutions. The methodological approach involves a multiple-case study (six banana cooperatives) with a single unit of analysis, applying a deductive approach to review institutional factors. The findings reveal that both formal institutions (such as certifications, quality standards, social responsibility policies, and incentives) and informal institutions (including cooperation, quality-of-life improvement, and social capital generation) promote the development of inclusive businesses within cooperatives at the base of the pyramid. This study serves as a foundational step for potential replication in other agricultural industries and economic sectors.PublishedLos negocios inclusivos como modelo en la base de la pirámide son un tema relativamente reciente de estudio. Desde la perspectiva institucional, las empresas se ven afectadas por normas, procesos, reglas de conducta moral y ética, que no han sido estudiados en el desarrollo de los negocios inclusivos con cooperativas agrícolas. El objetivo de esta investigación es identificar instituciones que pueden ayudar a desarrollar los modelos inclusivos de agronegocios. En esta investigación, las cooperativas agrícolas de producción bananera en el Magdalena, Colombia, son la unidad de análisis para identificar dichas instituciones. El método de revisión de factores institucionales es el caso múltiple (seis cooperativas bananeras) con una unidad simple mediante análisis deductivo. Los hallazgos indican que tanto las instituciones formales (certificaciones, estándares de calidad, políticas de responsabilidad social e incentivos) como las informales (cooperación, mejora de la calidad de vida y generación de capital social) fomentan el desarrollo de negocios inclusivos en las cooperativas de la base de la pirámide. Este estudio constituye un primer paso hacia la posible replicación en otras industrias agrícolas y sectores económicos

Coastal Disaster Assessment and Response
No full textCoastal communities have become increasingly vulnerable to natural hazards due to the escalating impacts of climate change. This Special Issue brings together innovative research focused on understanding, modeling, and mitigating coastal hazards. Contributions explore topics such as storm surge prediction using ensemble neural networks, seismic-induced liquefaction behavior in coastal embankments, the role of vegetation in wave attenuation and dune erosion, and numerical modeling of scour patterns. Several studies emphasize the technological advances, including the use of GIS, remote sensing, and climate modeling to improve hazard forecasting and vulnerability mapping. Other works investigate historical cyclone trends, tsunami risk assessment, and structural responses of buildings to coastal disasters. The findings underscore the need for integrated risk reduction strategies that combine engineering, environmental, and social perspectives. Advances in Differential Dynamical Systems with Applications to Economics and Biology, 2nd Edition
No full textIn recent research on natural processes, mathematical modeling has become useful. It is often the case that, in fields such as economics and biology, a temporal lag between cause and effect must often be taken into consideration. A natural and practical implementation of this phenomenon is through distributed delays in modeling. This is because they illustrate the situation where temporal lags arise in certain ranges of values for certain related probability distributions, considering the variables’ entire behavior history. Another mathematical tool that allows for systems' memory and inherited properties to be encompassed in a model is the replacement of integer-order derivatives with fractional derivatives. To address realistic conditions, stochastic perturbation framed by a stochastic differential delay system can explain the ambiguity about the system's context. The present book comprises all the 14 articles accepted and published in the Special Issue “Advances in Differential Dynamical Systems with Applications to Economics and Biology, 2nd Edition” of the MDPI journal Mathematics, with focuses on the dynamical analysis of mathematical models arising from economy and biology, and innovative developments in mathematical techniques for their applications. We expect that the international scientific community will find this collection of research papers influential and that they will spur additional investigations on diverse applications concerning dynamical systems in all scientific areas

Children and adolescent were a particularly sensitive population during this time, due to both the limitations of daily life (for their loved ones and themselves) and problems in accessing health services, not to mention those with pre-existing psychiatric conditions or disability.
