Chapter 6 A normative aspect of imagining

    No full text
This volume brings together two philosophical research areas that have been subject to increased attention: work regarding the unique character of having an experience and studies on the nature and powers of imagination. The importance of imagination seems to stand in tension with the assumed unique and irreplaceable role of experience in our lives. However, new arguments in various philosophical debates suggest that there is a need to examine how both areas of research interrelate and can enrich one another. The chapters in this volume examine whether the traditional accounts of experience and imagination need to be challenged. They are divided into thematic sections that discuss epistemological, ontological, normative, phenomenological, and intersubjective questions related to experience and imagination. Imagination and Experience is an essential resource for scholars and advanced students working in philosophy of mind, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and philosophy of psychology

Cultural Technologies: Robots and Artificial Intelligence in the Performing Arts presents a diverse range of perspectives from leading scholars and artists on contemporary performing arts practices that engage with robotic and AI (artificial intelligence) technologies. In Part One, ""Robot/AI Cultures and Performing Arts Practices,"" contributors discuss how cultural understandings of robots and AI influence the audience’s reception of performance works that feature such technologies and inspire artistic innovation. The chapters in Part Two, ""Performing Arts Cultures and Robots/AI Developments,"" explore how theories and practices of the performing arts can engender critical dialogue on matters of cultural difference concerning culturally non-specific (though implicitly Western) framings of robotic and AI technologies within science and engineering contexts. Reorienting the conversation around robotics and AI in the performing arts to place culture at its centre, Cultural Technologies: Robots and Artificial Intelligence in the Performing Arts offers thought-provoking analyses for advanced undergraduates, researchers, and performing arts practitioners interested in the relationships between music, theatre, and dance, and cutting-edge robotic and AI technologies

    Historiographies of Game Studies

    No full text
Historiographies of Game Studies offers a first-of-its-kind reflection on how game studies as an academic field has been shaped and sustained. Today, game studies is a thriving field with many dedicated national and international conferences, journals, professional societies, and a strong presence at conferences in disciplines like computer science, communication, media studies, theater, visual arts, popular culture, and others. But, when did game studies start? And what (and who) is at the core or center of game studies? Fields are defined as much by what they are not as by what they are, and their borderlands can be hotly contested spaces. In this anthology, scholars from across the field consider how the boundaries of game studies have been established, codified, contested, and protected, raising critical questions about who and what gets left out of the field. Over more than two dozen chapters and interviews with leading figures, including Espen Aarseth, Kishonna Gray, Henry Jenkins, Lisa Nakamura, Kentaro Matsumoto, Ken McAllister, and Janet Murray, the contributors offer a dazzling array of insightful provocations that address the formation, propagation, and cultivation of game studies, interrogating not only the field’s pasts but its potential futures and asking us to think deliberately about how academic fields are collectively built

Heaviness in Metal Music Production, Volume I

    No full text
Heaviness in Metal Music Production, Volume I: How and Why It Works provides an in-depth analysis of the art and craft of producing heaviness, the fundamental musical quality in metal music. Using primarily ethnographic research which draws on interviews and engineering documentation from various producers across different generations, the distinguishing feature of the study is the song ‘In Solitude’, which was written, recorded, and produced by the researchers themselves. Written by practising musicians, producers, and experts in music technology and musicology, this book offers a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between structural, performative, and technological components of a metal recording; the perceptual and discursive factors determining heaviness; and the relationship between creative freedom and technical demands in contemporary metal music production. Heaviness in Metal Music Production is a rigorous academic study that advances the field of metal music production research through an innovative and methodologically robust approach. At its core is an unprecedented experiment in which eight leading producers each mixed the same song, with their processes meticulously documented and analysed through in-depth interviews. This study not only provides unique insights into the conceptualizations and craft of heaviness in metal music production but also sets a new standard for empirical research in the discipline. As a result, it serves as a vital resource for scholars, researchers, and students in audio engineering and metal music studies, making it essential supplementary reading for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates, and academics engaged in these fields. This two-volume set offers a well-rounded insight into the production of heaviness in theory and practice. Revoicing Intangible Cultural Heritage

    No full text
Revoicing Intangible Cultural Heritage draws upon an original, wide-ranging dataset to show that the dynamics and ethics of participation in European national minority cultures’ intangible cultural heritage (ICH) are more nuanced than has previously been articulated. Arguing for an approach to analysing ICH that reflects societal change in regions that are historically those of national minorities, contributions to the volume focus on three regions across four countries. This allows for comparative exploration of exemplar contexts that span a range of circumstances in which European national minority cultures thrive and strive for voice and recognition. It explores how a wide range of people engage with national minorities’ ICH and seeks a better understanding of the ethical and practical dimensions of this participation. It proposes a heritage literate ‘revoicing’ of ICH: to create socially positive pathways to resilient ICH, and in turn ensure ICH is an arena where these positive social relations are shaped as part of an evolving ecosystem into the future. Revoicing Intangible Cultural Heritage takes an interdisciplinary approach ideally placed to interrogate the interplay of different groups with ICH from multiple perspectives. This makes the book essential reading for academics and students working in heritage studies, sociolinguistics, cultural and event studies, sociology, creative practice, and cultural geography

    Religious Orders and the ‘World’

    No full text
This book shows how male members of Catholic religious orders fashioned themselves in their interactions with the sin-ridden “world” that they claimed to have renounced. Inspired by recent innovations in the cultural and social history of early modern Catholicism, the contributions explore regular clerics’ practices of symbolic communication, their role as mediators between universal beliefs and practices and particular cultures of piety, their position in social networks, their relationships with Protestants, and their interactions with women religious. In so doing, the book sheds new light on the variety of material and symbolic exchanges between religious orders and secular society

The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing
