In this book Ben Braber answers the question how the integration of Jews into Dutch society influenced Jewish resistance during the German occupation of the Netherlands in the second world war. This study highlights the social position of Jews and their group characteristics, but also reviews other factors that determined what forms Jewish resistance took such as personal character and individual circumstance.This is the first comprehensive study of this subject in the English language of Jewish resistance in the Netherlands. It offers a new perspective on Jews during the Holocaust and counters the prejudice about Jews failing to resist persecution. This book is also relevant for today's multi-ethnical society. It is a case study about the hampered integration of a minority, in particular how people in this group react when they are forcefully segregated and persecuted, while thinkingthis cannot happen here

No full textThe here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing

This volume takes an interdisciplinary approach, viewing the border space as a place of contact and contrast, an area of both peaceful and violent exchange, of mobility of ideas and people, a structural element deployed by social actors to organise or adapt their own existence. The book examines the case of southern Italy (Mezzogiorno) between the 11th and 15th centuries, exploring the institutional history of land and sea border dynamics, and related commercial, political and social implications.Unter dem Stichwort „Grenze“ lässt sich ein breites Spektrum von Phänomenen zusammenfassen: geographische Grenzen, politische Abgrenzungen, militärisch kontrollierte Gebiete und durchlässige Interaktionsbereiche. No full textQuantum beams refer to neutrons and synchrotron radiation, and the facilities that use them are not familiar research methods. However, the micro-beams with high-brightness and high-energy X-rays have their penetrating power. The quantum beam has excellent capabilities for evaluating materials. Japan has the neutron facilities J-PARC and JRR-3, and the synchrotron radiation facility SPring-8. This reprint contains research articles that used these representative facilities in Japan. Specifically, it summarizes the latest research results on stress, strain, and texture using synchrotron radiation and neutrons in Japan. From of the perspective of materials, the works in this reprint cover a wide range of topics, not only including common metallic materials, but also coarse grains, welding materials, superconducting materials, construction materials, thermal barrier coatings, and composite materials. Measurement methods are based on diffraction. In terms of methodology, the time-of-flight method using neutrons, the double exposure method using synchrotron radiation suitable for coarse grains, the extended 3DXRD, and the constant penetration depth method are also included in this reprint. Numerical simulation techniques move into the mainstream in the evaluation of stress–strain of materials. However, when stress, strain, and texture are measured, the results of the numerical calculations differ from reality. As the saying goes, "seeing is believing"; science cannot advance with numerical calculations alone. By reading each of these papers, you should be able to find clues to solving the problems you are facing
