Beyond Perception
No full textThis book showcases the way a range of scholars have engaged with Tim Ingold’s opus since the publication of his ground-breaking The Perception of the Environment in 2000. Ingold’s work has become key for a variety of disciplines ranging from anthropology, archaeology, and human geography to art, architecture, design and studies of material and visual culture. As set out inThe Perception of the Environment and subsequent publications, Ingold proposed an understanding of the world that placed sentient, remembering and imagining organisms, or inhabitants, some of them human, at the heart of an extensive field of socio-ecological relations. In this work, Ingold develops broad-ranging analyses of personhood, knowledge and skills, among many other topics. This volume sets out to synthesize critical scholarship drawing on Ingold’s work, to lay out its principles, methods and results, and to demonstrate its contribution to reshaping both contemporary anthropology and wider intellectual terrains. Acceptance and Diffusion of Connected and Automated Driving in Japan and Germany
No full textThis open access book gives comprehensive empirical insights on connected and automated driving (CAD) of road transport vehicles which leads to the driver being partially or completely replaced by automation. The current trend towards widespread research and development of automation of motorised individual transport is driven by the expected benefits, such as increased road safety, smoother traffic flow, reduction of congestion, or use of driving time for other activities. CAD has the potential to change several dimensions of the transport system, ranging from changes in car ownership to the availability of entirely new mobility services. Some proponents even expect CAD to revolutionise the current transport system as a whole. In order to make informed statements about the possible impact of CAD on transport systems, research must consider a wide range of open questions: In what way do the existing framework conditions of the prevailing mobility systems affect the impact of CAD? How does the governance style relate to regulatory changes and resource allocation in the development of CAD? Is an autonomous ride-hailing service really a profitable business case? What are the attitudes and expectations towards CAD in the general public? What are the effects of CAD on transport systems? What are other impacts of CAD that should be assessed? All of these questions were addressed within different projects as part of the Japanese-German Research Cooperation on CAD and can be discovered by the reader of this book
Metamodeling for Extended Reality
No full textThis open access book which is based on the author’s dissertation in 2024 explores the challenges of metamodeling in the context of extended reality and emphasizes the need for new concepts in metamodeling to effectively combine it with extended reality technologies. The central question of this work is how metamodeling can be used “in” and “for” extended reality. The book is structured in nine chapters: Chapter 1 introduces the topic by providing background information and outlining the research objectives, questions, methodology and structure. Chapter 2 delves into the existing literature and developments in the field. It covers various aspects of modeling, such as conceptual, enterprise, and metamodeling, as well as extended reality (XR), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and the metaverse. Next, chapter 3 presents the generic requirements for metamodeling for augmented and virtual reality by systematically deriving use cases for joining AR and metamodeling. Chapter 4 then identifies specific requirements for integrating metamodeling with XR, such as coordinate mappings, visualization of model components, detection and tracking, context, or interaction. Subsequently, chapter 5 introduces a new domain-specific visual modeling language for creating augmented reality scenarios, particularly within the context of metamodeling, before chapter 6 outlines the conceptualization and design of a 3D enhanced metamodeling platform considering extended reality, detailing its structure, components, and the interconnection of its elements. Chapter 7 then presents the initial implementation of the various components of this modeling platform, and chapter 8 evaluates the newly introduced platform both theoretically and empirically. Eventually, chapter 9 concludes the book by an alignment with the initial research questions, discussing limitations, and provides a final summary and an outlook for further research. This book mainly aims at researchers in conceptual modeling, especially in projects related to XR, VR, or AR, as the presented new domain-specific modeling method for creating workflows for XR/VR/AR applications does not assume specific prior programming knowledge

The Left and Digital Politics
No full textDigital platforms are more than devices, algorithms and websites. They organise societies through the leadership of platform capitalists and their allies in political institutions. We know that this leadership, or hegemony, fosters exploitation and inequalities. We also know that a politics of resistance is emerging among platform workers and communities around the digital commons.
Less known is how the left has been changing to have a say in digital politics. And what do left-wing parties think and do about platform societies? The Left and Digital Politics answers these questions by developing an updated Gramscian critical theory of (counter-)hegemony in platform societies and a comparative analysis of the ideologies and practices of key European left-wing parties.
