Fundamentals and Applications of GNSS Reflectometry

    No full text
This open access book presents the fundamental methods and applications of GNSS-reflected signal reception processing. On the basis of systematic analysis of GNSS signals, it delves into the typical characteristics of signals after reflection, discussing the software and hardware design of GNSS-reflected signal receivers from different perspectives, including RF reception, IF processing, and extraction of observations. It offers a comprehensive introduction and exploration of ocean remote sensing, land remote sensing, and several new applications (such as airborne moving target detection, river boundary monitoring, and surface water body identification). The content covers a variety of different configuration modes such as shore-based, ground-based, airborne, and satellite-based and also includes two signal processing methods: single-antenna interferometry and dual-antenna cooperative method. The data used in the theoretical modeling and algorithm performance simulation validation are both from experiments conducted by the authors' research team and from experiments carried out with partners, as well as results processed from publicly available datasets domestically and internationally. This book is suitable for faculty and students in the fields related to satellite navigation (such as electronic communication, radar remote sensing, aerospace, and computer), earth observation, and also serves as a reference book for engineers and scientific management personnel engaged in application research in the fields of oceanography, meteorology, agriculture, water conservancy, and environment studies

    Signature Methods in Finance

    No full text
This Open Access volume offers an accessible entry point into the fast-growing field of signature methods in finance. It is written for early-career researchers and quantitatively minded practitioners—quant analysts and applied researchers—seeking a clear, practical introduction. It highlights recent developments and includes coding examples to help readers apply signature methods in practice. The advantages of modeling financial markets from a path-wise perspective, rather than as a traditional series of returns, are increasingly gaining recognition. Signature methods provide a parsimonious description of paths of stochastic processes and, through the signature kernel, open a rich and compelling framework at the interface between machine learning and mathematical finance. “I have been extraordinarily fortunate to work alongside brilliant collaborators throughout this journey, and this book beautifully reflects the richness of that shared contribution—for which I am deeply grateful.”—Prof Terry Lyons, University of Oxford, Imperial College, and PI of DataSig “This fascinating collection, dedicated to Terry Lyons, offers invaluable insights into signature methods and their many uses.” Jim Gatheral, Presidential Professor, Baruch College, Quant of the Year 2021 "A timely and important contribution to the fast-growing field of signature methods, showcasing the theory and applications of these powerful ideas.” — Prof Ben Hambly, University of Oxford “An impressive book on signatures with articles by the most distinguished researchers in the field. A reference from day one." – Dr Hans Buehler, co-CEO XTX Markets, Quant of the Year 2022 "This book provides a masterful exposition and development of signature methods in finance. It is concise, precise, and actionable. It will be an excellent source for anyone interested in modern financial engineering techniques." – Prof Alexander Lipton, Global Head of R&D, ADIA, and Founding Member ADIA Lab, Quant of the Year 2000 and Buy-side Quant of the Year 2021

    Understanding Social Struggles

    No full text
Recently, both liberal philosophy of recognition and theories of epistemic injustice have come under attack for failing to reconstruct how marginalized groups find sources of recognition and agency. To understand social struggles well, we need to think of the way in which those within the struggle act towards emancipatory change instead of focusing on the (re)actions of those in power. This volume brings together leading scholars working at the intersection of epistemic injustice theories and recognition theories, setting out to apply insights from this relation to contemporary phenomena and backlashes in the formation and acts of socially struggling emancipators – also considering ideology critique, epistemology of ignorance, standpoint theory, and theories of consciousness raising

    Beyond Loneliness

    No full text
This Open Access book reimagines social connection beyond the crisis narrative of loneliness, presenting an innovative interdisciplinary model that bridges individual experiences with community infrastructure. Drawing on research with urban fringe residents, the authors reveal how meaningful connections form through complex interactions across physical and digital spaces, shaped by environmental contexts and personal capabilities. Beyond Loneliness offers a strengths-based framework through rich thematic analysis and six powerful, detailed personal narratives that illuminate connection journeys. It demonstrates how people actively navigate their social worlds and shows how contextual factors, including social, built, technological, and institutional, influence connection opportunities. For practitioners, policymakers, and researchers, this accessible book provides practical insights for fostering environments where diverse pathways to social connection can flourish. By moving beyond deficit-focused interventions toward comprehensive strategies that recognise social connection as a dynamic, relational process, Beyond Loneliness offers a transformative approach to building more connected, resilient communities

    Municipal Tasks and Financing

    No full text
This an Open access book. It provides a comparative and multidisciplinary analysis of how local governments perform their tasks and how these are financed. The volume stands out with three essential features. First, the comparative research reflected in the volume has a global geographical scope because it is the outcome of a Horizon 2020 project involving 18 partners from six continents. Therefore, it includes highly topical and so far under-researched case studies beyond just the European continent. Secondly, we look at the above-mentioned topics from a timely urban-rural perspective, as the ultimate aim is to explore the impact of the phenomenon of urbanisation on local governments and the response of urban and rural municipalities. Thirdly, the book focuses within broader research on municipal tasks and finances on several specific topics that have been revealed by our project as particularly relevant. These are public transport policies of urban and rural local governments, different ways of public service provision like PPP and public enterprises, financial equalization between urban and rural municipalities, as well as special fees as alternative sources of local revenue

    Patient-focused Development of Biopharmaceutical Products

    No full text
This open access book builds the case for the business motivation, techniques, and approaches to use in development of a medicinal product for human therapy, whether delivered via an oral dose form (“pill” or solution) or a delivery system (device). It shares the growing demands by patients and caregivers, as well as regulators, for designs which are most easily understood and usable, and which can ensure the medication can be consistently delivered and will, therefore, allow best outcomes. The book weaves skills in “human-centered design” into the design of medicinal delivery systems. It would be a reference for those in academia studying pharmacokinetics, formulation or product design and development, as well as those in the development of biopharmaceutical therapies. This is an open access book

    Die Ir_relevanz von Geschlecht

Health Systems, Health Services and Inequality in Population Health

    No full text
This open access book shows the scientific and policy-added value of combining health systems, health services and population health research. In doing so the authors create awareness among researchers to look beyond the boundaries of their own discipline and promote cross-disciplinary collaboration. The book also gives an overview of what is known in the scientific literature about the relationships between the structure of health systems, health service provision and utilisation, and inequalities in population health. Health inequalities are unjust and avoidable and, as a focus of health policy in many governments, are widely studied in public health research. But studies of health inequalities too often ignore the role that health systems and health services play in the production of inequalities in population health and, as a consequence, their potential to create or reduce inequalities in health. Studies of inequalities in health often incorporate the social determinants of health. The same societal structures that form the social determinants of health also determine the health system structure and their impact on access to and the provision of health services and the benefits of health service use to patients with different socioeconomic backgrounds. This means that attempts to reduce health inequalities by addressing the social determinants of health must also consider the potential pathway through the health system and the provision of health services. In the final chapter the authors discuss ways of breaking down the barriers between the three approaches. After reading this compact volume, researchers will be more aware of the theoretical and methodological approaches in the three areas and more inclined to look beyond the boundaries of their own discipline. Health Systems, Health Services and Inequality in Population Health is essential reading for researchers in health systems research, health services research and population health research. In addition, the brief is relevant for health policy researchers, health impact researchers, health economists, epidemiologists, public health practitioners and professionals in health services planning and management

Wirkliches und Mögliches in der Klimakrise

    No full text
