Energy Transformation in Lithuania
This open access Brief investigates the issue of energy transformation in small countries without their own fossil resources. Using Lithuania as a case study, the Brief analyses energy transformation from both a municipal and regional perspective, outlining the reasons for pursuing energy transformation, the main constraints that exist, and proposing practical methodologies for assessing local energy potential. The chapters focus on real-world challenges, including political barriers and competence gaps, while also making concrete policy recommendations and offering models for energy transformation in regional areas. Filling a critical gap in the discourse on municipal energy transformation, this Brief will be of interest to scholars, researchers, and policymakers in the fields of energy policy, regional development, and sustainability as well as professionals in municipal governance, energy sector decision-makers, and private sector stakeholders interested in decentralized energy solutions
Bridging the Gap Between AI and Reality
This open access book constitutes revised selected papers from the Second International Conference on Bridging the Gap between AI and Reality, AISoLA 2024, which took place in Crete, Greece, in October/November 2024. The papers included in this book extend the presentation in the AISoLA 2024 on-site proceedings. They focus on the following topics: AI-Assisted Programming; health care approaches using formal methods and AI; responsible and trusted AI: an interdisciplinary perspective; statistical model checking; and verification for neur-symbolic artificial intelligence
Artificial Intelligence and Education in the Global South
This open access book examines the dynamic intersection of artificial intelligence and education in the Global South, where resource constraints and demographic trends create unique challenges and opportunities. Adopting a systems perspective, it explores how AI can transform teaching, curriculum, assessment, teacher professional development, school leadership and system governance while addressing AI literacy, improving the effectiveness of education and developing transferable skills. The book highlights the risks of exacerbating existing inequalities if technology is not carefully integrated and stresses the importance of human-centered, locally adapted solutions. The book examines whether AI is supporting innovation or the transformation of education systems and how it is addressing the principal most vexing challenges with respect to the areas examined. Each chapter draws on an analysis of the potential of AI, on evidence of its use and on evaluation on the implementation and effectiveness of applications. Each chapter concludes with main takeaways for policy and practice, key ethical issues and questions that merit more research

Place and the Social-Spatial Determinants of Health
This open access contributed volume is the first to address Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) from a place-based perspective with a transdisciplinary, global outlook. In this open access book, experts from geography, public health, urban planning, sociology, architecture, and more respond to growing calls for action on SDoH to improve health outcomes and promote health equity. Through theoretical considerations and case studies, the book explores how a spatial perspective influences, expands, and enriches understanding of SDoH across different scales and applications. Failing to account for patterns of structural health factors using an explicitly spatial approach can lead to biased, misinterpreted, or incomplete analyses. Adopting a geographic, place-based perspective remains crucial for SDoH studies from theoretical, analytical, and technological standpoints. The chapters in this book highlight areas needing further attention, such as spatial mismatch in health services, the complexities of social and spatial networks, and the impact of government policies on health disparities. Guided by SDoH frameworks, the book is divided into the sections on conceptualizing Social-Spatial Determinants of Health (S&SDoH), integrating S&SDoH in practice, methodological approaches and techniques for measuring S&SDoH, and empirical illustrations of S&SDoH
Proceedings of Tenth International Congress on Information and Communication Technology
This open access book gathers selected high-quality research papers presented at the Tenth International Congress on Information and Communication Technology (ICICT 2025), held in London, on February 18–21, 2025. It discusses emerging topics pertaining to information and communication technology (ICT) for managerial applications, e-governance, e-agriculture, e-education and computing technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), and e-mining. Shaping Inclusive Workplaces for Persons with Disabilities
Despite the increase in research about workplace inclusion, the current literature is dominated by a negative focus on the barriers managers face as they attempt to hire people from disadvantaged groups, including people with disabilities. This open access book offers a positive and practical guide to workplace inclusion that focuses on the opportunities and strategies for managers to succeed and to develop and capitalize on the strengths and resources of individuals. Unlike some works with a broader societal focus, this contributed volume puts the spotlight firmly on what happens inside workplaces and organizations. It shifts focus from a reactive view of organizations acting on external motivations and pressures towards a proactive view, based on internal motivation, opportunities, and untapped resources. Each chapter is written on a specific theme by a leading expert, digesting the theory and applying it to real-world cases. It will be of great interest to executive education and MBA students, as well as HR practitioners and policymakers
Decentralized Autonomous Organizations—Governance, Technology, and Legal Perspectives
This open access book explores the transformative world of DAOs, where decentralized governance meets blockchain technology. Based on a competitive peer-reviewed selection of papers presented at the second European DAO Workshop at ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Zurich, Switzerland in 2025, this book provides an in-depth analysis of the current state of DAO research. In this context, it addresses key aspects of DAOs, from governance mechanisms and stakeholder dynamics to the development of essential tools and frameworks. Beyond examining how DAOs can redefine organizational structures, enhance transparency, and promote democratic decision-making, it also addresses important challenges such as centralization risks, legal uncertainties, and integration into existing economic and regulatory frameworks. This book is valuable for researchers and practitioners interested in understanding and promoting the potential of DAOs in creating a fairer and more innovative digital economy
Top-down und bottom-up Dynamiken europäischer Öffentlichkeit im Lokalen
