No full textIn dem Essay wird die Sowjetunion in den internationalen Kontext der Zwischenkriegszeit eingeordnet. Die zentrale These ist, dass Russland – trotz seiner Eigenheiten – stark in globale Prozesse eingebunden war, wie Massenproduktion, -politik, -kultur und -konsum. Der Erste Weltkrieg und die darauffolgenden Revolutionen verstärkten diese Entwicklungen erheblich. Die sowjetische Diktatur verfolgte eine Form der antiliberalen Modernisierung, die sich zwar von westlichen Demokratien unterschied, ihnen aber strukturell in vielem ähnelte. Alle Großmächte jener Zeit waren Teil eines Wettstreits um gesellschaftliche Modernität, wobei sie sich gegenseitig beeinflussten, beobachteten und teils imitierten.The essay places the Soviet Union in the international context of the interwar period. The central thesis is that Russia – despite its peculiarities – was strongly involved in global processes such as mass production, politics, culture and consumption. The First World War and the subsequent revolutions significantly reinforced these developments. The Soviet dictatorship pursued a form of anti-liberal modernisation that differed from Western democracies but was structurally similar to them in many ways. All the major powers of the time were part of a competition for social modernity, influencing, observing and, in some cases, imitating each other

Identität oder Ideologie: Die Entwicklung der öffentlichen Diskussion um die "russische Idee" während der Perestrojka
No full textDer Aufsatz untersucht die Entwicklung des Krisenbewusstseins in Russland seit 1988 und die damit verbundene Diskussion um den Begriff der "russischen Idee". Trotz anfänglicher Polarisierung zwischen konservativen und liberalen Strömungen in der russischen Gesellschaft entstand eine neue Synthese, die Elemente beider Richtungen vereinte. Anhand der Analyse von Diskursen und Beispielen wird die Qualität der Diskussion beleuchtet. Es wird zwischen Autoren unterschieden, die die "russische Idee" unkritisch tradieren, und solchen, die zur Entmythologisierung und zur Schaffung neuer kultureller Werte aufrufen, wie Prochanov und Kljamkin. Die Ideologisierung der "russischen Idee" wurde durch drei Kriterien begünstigt: die Möglichkeit der Koalitionsbildung rechtsorientierter Gruppen, die Eignung der russischen religiösen Philosophie als "Dienstphilosophie" und das Selbstverständnis der russischen Philosophie als "Lehre" statt als kritische Reflexion.The essay examines the development of crisis consciousness in Russia since 1988 and the associated debate surrounding the concept of the "Russian idea." Despite an initial polarization between conservative and liberal currents within Russian society, a new synthesis emerged that combined elements of both directions. Through the analysis of discourses and examples, the quality of the debate is explored. A distinction is made between authors who uncritically perpetuate the "Russian idea" and those who call for its demythologization and the creation of new cultural values, such as Prokhanov and Klyamkin. The ideologization of the "Russian idea" was facilitated by three factors: the potential for coalition-building among right-leaning groups, the suitability of Russian religious philosophy as a "service philosophy," and the self-conception of Russian philosophy as a "doctrine" rather than as critical reflection

No full textThis essay, based on broader research on independent radio stations from Kyiv, Gasoline Radio and 20ft Radio, and an independent label, Shukai, looks at how these sound media can engage with cultural history and offer different ways to think about archiving. Through applying Diana Taylor’s use of repertoire to three specific sound examples (a radio show, an installation, and a record), I argue that these alternative sound media formats allow an open and dynamic reading of cultural works of the past. The role practitioners seem to take up is to look for and fill gaps they see in mainstream public discourse in relation to Ukrainian music, culture, and sound media history. Listening for the missing knowledge from the past allows the audience to attune it with imaginations of the future
