Long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and noise and dynamic brain connectivity across adolescence

    No full text
Traffic-related exposures, such as air pollution and noise, show long-term associations with brain alterations in children and adolescents. The associations with functional connectivity have been studied using static approaches of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) (i.e., average connectivity between regions across the scanning session). Our aim was to investigate the long-term association of traffic air pollution and noise during pregnancy and childhood with functional connectivity across adolescence using a dynamic approach, which captures different connectivity patterns across the scanning session. We used data from the Generation R population-based birth cohort. We estimated levels of 14 air pollutants and traffic noise at home addresses during pregnancy and childhood. We acquired rs-fMRI data at the age-10 and age-14 visits. We included participants with rs-fMRI data in at least one visit and either air pollution data (n=3,588) or noise data (n=2,642). We used k-means clustering to identify 5 connectivity patterns, called ‘states’, that reoccur over time and across subjects and visits. We calculated the mean time spent in each state for each participant and visit. We performed multi- and single-pollutant mixed effects models adjusted for socioeconomic and lifestyle variables, including the individual as random effect to test the associations between the exposures and the mean time spent in each state. Exposure to nitrogen oxides, particulate matter (PM), and road-traffic noise was related to differences in the time spent in the connectivity states, both in the multi- and single-pollutant models. For instance, higher PMCOARSE (PM2.5-PM10) during pregnancy and higher noise during childhood were associated with more time spent in a state in which the default-mode network, related to self-referential processes and mind-wandering, shows high connectivity. Traffic-related exposures might be related to long-term alterations in brain functional network organization in adolescents. Further research should explore the potential impact of these differences on cognition and psychopathology

Auto-induced uplink 4G and 5G RF-EMF exposure assessment using a network monitoring application in different microenvironments across seven European countries

    No full text
The auto-induced uplink (a-UL) radio-frequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure, often the dominant part of the total RF-EMF exposure, has not been included in previous microenvironmental studies. As 5G exposure depends more on mobile phone usage, monitoring typical transmit power levels is crucial towards more accurate personal exposure assessment. This study describes spatial differences in average mobile phone transmit power and investigates the influence of uplink duty cycles and frequency band usage. A novel methodology using the network monitoring application QualiPoc in fourth-generation (4G) and non-standalone fifth-generation (5G) networks was presented. For the first time, the assessment of 4G and 5G a-UL RF-EMF exposure was conducted simultaneously in a large-scale microenvironmental study in Europe. Measurements were performed along predefined routes in 282 different microenvironments (e.g., parks, residential areas) across seven European countries, during a maximum uplink usage scenario. The Netherlands had the highest average transmit powers per microenvironment (median 20.6 dBm). Transmit powers in villages were 0.6–2.1 dB higher than in big cities. The study suggested that base station density is a key predictor of a-UL exposure. Comparing technologies and frequency bands, average transmit powers for 5G were about 3.3 dB lower than for 4G and lowest for frequency bands with a time division duplexing (TDD) scheme due to the low uplink duty cycle (below 20%). This study provides crucial measurement data for epidemiologists and governments to enhance the understanding of the a-UL component of personal RF-EMF exposure

Replication Data for: Unveiling the potential abuse liability of α-D2PV: A novel α-carbon phenyl-substituted synthetic cathinone

    No full text
This dataset contains experimental data associated with the publication "Unveiling the potential abuse liability of α-D2PV: A novel α-carbon phenyl-substituted synthetic cathinone" (Nadal-Gratacós et al., Neuropharmacology, 2025). The study aimed to investigate the pharmacological and behavioral effects of α-D2PV in rodents, assessing its potential for abuse through neurochemical analyses, locomotor activity assays, conditioned place preference tests and self-administration paradigm. The dataset includes results from in vivo microdialysis (dopamine and serotonin release), other behavioral tests ( thigmotaxis), and drug dosage information. It serves to support the reproducibility of the findings and to facilitate further research on synthetic cathinones and their abuse potential.</p

Replication Data for: "Flexible graphene-based neurotechnology for high-precision deep brain mapping and neuromodulation in Parkinsonian rats"

    No full text
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neuroelectronic therapy for the treatment of a broad range of neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease. Current DBS technologies face important limitations that impact their efficacy, such as large electrode size, invasiveness, and lack of adaptive therapy based on biomarker monitoring. The use of novel electrode materials is expected to contribute to overcome these limitations. In a previous study, we reported that nanoporous reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is a promising electrode material due to its high charge injection capacity and low impedance. Here, we investigate the potential benefits of using the rGO technology in DBS. To this end, we implant a flexible high-density array of rGO microelectrodes in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) of healthy and hemi-parkinsonian rats to investigate specific electrophysiological Parkinsonian biomarkers and to assess the effect of microscale stimulation. We demonstrate that these microelectrodes record action potentials with high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR > 6), allowing the precise localization of deep brain structures like the STN, and the tracking of multiunit-based biomarkers such as STN bursts. The bidirectional capability to deliver high-density focal stimulation and to record high-fidelity signals unlocks the visualization of the local neuromodulation of the multiunit biomarker. These findings demonstrate the potential of bidirectional high-resolution neural interfaces to investigate the mechanisms around DBS in preclinical models and suggest new avenues for the use of adaptive closed-loop operation based on electrophysiological biomarkers monitoring
