    Short-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and dynamic brain connectivity in adolescents

    There is some evidence which suggests short-term effects of traffic-related air pollution on brain function in adults. We aimed to examine these associations at ages 10 and 14 years using dynamic functional brain connectivity. We included participants from a population-based birth cohort with brain connectivity and air pollution data at home (n=3608) or school (n=2305) in at least one visit. We used land use regression models to estimate levels of air pollutants, including nitrogen oxides (NOX) and particulate matter (PM), during the week before the outcome measurement. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, we generated five connectivity patterns. We calculated the mean time spent in each pattern for each participant and visit. We performed linear mixed effects models adjusted for relevant confounders. The median levels of NOX at the two visits and at home and school were between 36 and 47 μg/m3 and the median levels of PM2.5 were between 11 and 12 μg/m3. We found a weak association between higher air pollution exposure and less time spent in a low modularized connectivity pattern (e.g. coefficient=-0.031 [95% confidence interval=-0.056; -0.006] per 20 μg/m3 increase in NOX at home). However, this association did not remain after multiple testing correction. Further research that explores these associations at other exposure levels and other age periods is warranted

    Hot temperatures disrupt sleep in adults, but the impact on younger populations, despite the essential role of sleep in their health and development, remain underexplored. We assessed the relationship between ambient nocturnal temperature and physiological sleep characteristics and self-reported daytime sleepiness in preadolescents from two European birth cohorts. We evaluated preadolescents from the Dutch Generation R Study (3,340 (mean age 13.5 years) and the Spanish INMA Project (587 (mean age 14.3 years)). Ambient nocturnal temperature at participants' residences was estimated with the UrbClim model at a 100x100m resolution. Physiological sleep characteristics (total sleep time, sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, sleep efficiency) were measured with a wrist-accelerometer up to nine nights. Self-reported daytime sleepiness was assessed using the Paediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale or the Sleep Disturbances Scale for Children. We ran linear mixed models for each physiological sleep characteristic and distributed lag models for daytime sleepiness. Nocturnal temperatures ranged from -7.0-31.0 °C (Generation R) and 1.3-30.3 °C (INMA). In Generation R, higher nocturnal temperatures were associated with a shorter total sleep time (-3.7 min per 5 °C [95 % CI -5.4; -1.9]) and poorer sleep efficiency (-0.3 % per 5 °C [95 % CI -0.5; -0.1]), especially in warmer months and low socioeconomic status level neighbourhoods. No associations were found for physiological sleep characteristics in INMA or for daytime sleepiness scores in either cohort. Warmer temperatures were associated with shortened sleep duration and poorer sleep efficiency in adolescents in the Netherlands, but not in Spain. These results suggest potential cross-country differences in the relationship between ambient temperature and adolescent sleep, though comparisons should be made cautiously due to differences in climate, acclimatization, population characteristics, and sample size. Climate change may worsen preadolescents sleep, underscoring the need for strategies to protect sleep and promote long-term health

    The dataset contains data from the survey to European organisations distributed by the ENACT (Easy-to-understand News for Transformative Collaboration) project. ENACT aims to promote best practices and understanding of easy-to-understand news. The aim of the survey was to gather information on current practices, challenges, and opportunities in easy-to-understand news production in Europe. Participants from several European organisations that offer or might offer this service completed the survey online, via Microsoft Forms, from January to February 2025. A total of 41 responses from different organisations are featured in the dataset. Their answers provide information on several aspects of easy-to-understand news: a) News offer, b) Legislation c) Language of the news, d) News selection in terms of geographical scope and topic, e) Target audiences, feedback strategies and audience reach, f) Professionals and workflows, including news creation and validation processes, specific training and the use of artificial intelligence, and g) challenges and future plans

    This dataset contains raw data from an in vivo study evaluating the bioavailability and biodistribution of β-carotene delivered via different oleogel structures compared to liquid oil. The study utilized 18 rats (4 treatment groups, n=4; 1 baseline control group, n=2) to assess how the structural composition of the delivery matrix influences the absorption of β-carotene and its metabolic conversion into retinol across different tissues. The experimental design evaluated an enriched corn oil control against three specific oleogel formulations: Control: Corn oil with β-carotene (BC-corn oil). BC-OGS: Oleogel structured with glyceryl stearate. BC-OLEC: Oleogel structured with glyceryl stearate and lecithin. BC-OHLEC: Oleogel structured with glyceryl stearate and hydrogenated lecithin
