    A perda e a retomada do Guató

    Get PDF
The Guató is a highly endangered indigenous language of a people that inhabits the Pantanal since time immemorial. To understand how the obsolescence of this language took place, we present three processes that resulted into disintegration of the Guató family: male celibacy, marriages between Guató women and Brazilian men, and the appropriation of Guató children by fazenda owners. For that purpose, we relate and comment interviews given by Guatós about how the language fell into disuse in their families. Since the Guató people were characterized by a dispersive settlement pattern and an atomization of families, these three processes (which coexisted and affected different families in specific ways) contributed to the degradation of bonds which sustained the Guató language. Along with social and demographic determinants which we do not analyze here closely, such as epidemics, economic fragility, and lack of official identification, the disintegration of families brought to an end the ancient Guató way of living in the Pantanal as well as their language that now lasts in the memory of some elderly persons and, in a more limited way, in school environment and in revitalization attempts.O guató é uma língua indígena seriamente ameaçada cujo povo habita o Pantanal desde tempos imemoriais.

What makes business speakers sound charismatic? A contrastive acoustic-melodic analysis of Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg

    Get PDF
Phonetic research on the prosodic sources of perceived charisma has taken a big step towards making a speaker’s tone-of-voice a tangible, quantifiable, and trainable matter. However, the tone-of-voice includes a complex bundle of acoustic features, and a lot of parameters have not even been looked at so far. Moreover, all previous studies focused on political or religious leaders and left aside the large field of managers and CEOs in the world of business. These are the two research gaps addressed in the present study. An acoustic analysis of about 1,350 prosodic phrases from keynotes given by a more charismatic CEO (Steve Jobs) and a less charismatic CEO (Mark Zuckerberg) suggests that the same tone-of-voice settings that make political or religious leaders sound more charismatic also work for business speakers. In addition, results point to further charisma-relevant acoustic parameters related to rhythm, emphasis, pausing, and voice quality - as well as to audience type as a significant context factor. The findings are discussed with respect to implications for future perception-oriented studies and perspectives for a computer-based measurement, assessment, and training of a charismatic tone of voice.

Theorizing about the syntax of human language: a radical alternative to generative formalisms

    Get PDF
Linguists standardly assume that a grammar is a formal system that ‘generates’ a set of derivations. But this is not the only way to formalize grammars. I sketch a different basis for syntactic theory: model-theoretic syntax (MTS). It defines grammars as finite sets of statements that are true (or false) in certain kinds of structure (finite labeled graphs such as trees). Such statements provide a direct description of syntactic structure. Generative grammars do not do this; they are strikingly ill-suited to accounting for certain familiar properties of human languages, like the fact that ungrammaticality is a matter of degree. Many aspects of linguistic phenomena look radically different when viewed in MTS terms. I pay special attention to the fact that sentences containing invented nonsense words (items not in the lexicon) are nonetheless perceived as sentences. I also argue that the MTS view dissolves the overblown controversy about whether the set of sentences in a human language is always infinite: many languages (both Brazilian indigenous languages and others) appear not to employ arbitrarily iterative devices for embedding or coordination, but under an MTS description this does not define them as radically distinct in typological terms.

    Get PDF
Based on the neuroscience of reading, I demonstrate the verbal language processing levels hierarchical nature. In order to recognize the processed entities, pairing with invariant units occurs encompassing any each class achievements, as long as they do not exceed the boundaries delimiting it as distinct from another. The lower the level, the smaller the paradigm elements number, the more closed to new ones inclusion, the more conditioned to the higher level, the more necessary its automation, therefore, less conscious and requiring less processing time. I will exemplify with the reading processing. The reading itself first level begins in the left occipital-temporal region, when neurons specialized through early literacy recognize the letter features. Then, the next level, letter recognition. Both levels are independent of the oral language, but the next one, the graphemes processing, is absolutely dependent on the oral language, as they represent phonemes, performed in syllables, which dynamically produce the phonetic changes resulting from co-articulation: when we read, even silently, we \u27hear\u27 our own voice in the inner ‘speech’. The next is the word level, with stress attribution, including clitics that do not have it.

The Differential Object Marking (DOM) consists of marking the direct object with a preposition. In Portuguese DOM occurs only with the dative preposition A. The present paper examines cases of marked direct objects in diachronic Portuguese. Our main objective is to verify the widespread hypothesis of Spanish influence on the occurrence of DOM in Portuguese. To achieve this goal, we analyze Portuguese texts from two selected corpora. We investigate factors pointed out as triggers of DOM (BOSSONG, 1991): the semantic feature of animacy, definiteness, and specificity. To confirm if the cases of DOM found in diachronic data from Portuguese were influenced by the Spanish and attest when, in the history of the language, the phenomenon decreased, we analyzed data from the 16th to the 19th centuries. In other to attest if the DOM that occurs in Portuguese and Spanish are the same, we compare marked and non-marked data from the 16th and the 17th centuries. The results confirm the hypothesis of Spanish influence, although the distribution of DOM is not the same in the Portuguese and Spanish of the centuries analyzed here. In Portuguese, the cases of non-marked objects are more frequent than the DOM cases.

In this study, we intend to shed new lights on the investigations proposed about the stress pattern of verbs in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), associating Optimality Theory constraints model with fundamental principles of Metrical Phonology (HAYES, 1995). We propose an analysis of the verbal stress, including the stress contrasts (for example: “parte” and “parti”) present in this class of words and which do not appear in the works on the subject. Based on Parametric Metrical Theory (HAYES, 1995), we considered that three parameters are sufficient to capture the facts regarding the primary stress in the BP verbs, namely: a. Foot construction: form a non-iterative syllabic trochee from right to left. Degenerate feet are only allowed in the strong position, when the canonical foot cannot be formed (weak prohibition); b. Extrametricality: the plural ending in the 1st and 2nd person of the plural of the verbs of the imperfect, the more-than-perfect and the future of the past tense of the indicative. In the remaining cases, the final consonant with the ending status, that is, N or S; c. Final Rule: on the right.

The present study aims to investigate one of the acoustic correlates of primary stress in Brazilian Portuguese – namely, vowel quality – in initial mid vowels of complex words formed by true and compositional suffixes. We start from the assumption that true affixes are prosodically integrated to the base, while compositional affixes can be considered independent prosodic words. Since they are prosodic words and, consequently, bear primary stress, we hypothesize that vowels in the base are pronounced in their full forms, as stressed vowels; whereas vowels of words derived by true affixes, since they are unstressed, can present a more centralized realization in the vocalic chart. In order to verify if the classification of affixes in two different groups, based on morphophonological criteria, can be sustained by acoustic characteristics, we collected data from 5 male participants from the southern region of Brazil. The participants produced target words with mid vowels in the carrier sentence “Diga X pra mim – Say X to me” and we analyzed the acoustic parameters F1 (related to tongue height) and F2 (related to frontness/backness) of initial vowels.O presente estudo pretende investigar um dos correlatos acústicos do acento primário no português brasileiro – a saber, a qualidade vocálica – em vogais médias iniciais de palavras complexas por sufixos legítimos e sufixos composicionais.

While L2 acquisition by Brazilians has been studied for different languages, the acquisition of Brazilian Portuguese by foreigners has been poorly explored. Recent studies of non-native accented speech in other languages have shown that a foreign accent could largely influence the perception of personal qualities of speakers, and this issue presents a large interest for intercultural research projects. Our research project is focused on Russophone immigrants living in Brazil, bilingual speakers of Russian and Portuguese. The specific aim of the current work is to describe a database containing information about 40 native Russian speakers living in São Paulo for at least six months. Their linguistic and sociocultural profiles are presented, and the experimental protocol of the data collection is described. The protocol included recording speech samples in Russian and in Portuguese and video recordings for further facial expression analysis of bilinguals by the program FaceReader 7.0. The analysis of the sociocultural profiles of the Russophones, presented in the current work, provides a strong basis for the enrichment of the phonetic, sociolinguistic, and nonverbal behavior analysis of these speakers.

Redesenhando as práticas discursivas à luz da Teoria da Atividade

The aim of this report is to bring to light how the educational design (FILATRO, 2010) for the subject Study Techniques and Academic Research Development (DL) has affected the expansive learning (ENGESTRÖM, 2002) in the Development Course for Air Force Officers. The course is a pilot project for the implementation of distancelearning modality at Universidade da Força Aérea that has started in 2018. I intend to correlate elements of the educational design (which fosters the production of academic essays as a written genre) to the knowledge arisen from air force practices, through language and digital skills on the Moodle 3.2 platform. My experiences as a Portuguese language professor, subject coordinator, instructional designer and researcher are influenced by the perspective of a critical and collaborative research (MAGALHÃES,2009), which allows me to intervene in the learning process. I also understand language as a mediator and constitutor of human relations, in all its socio-historical and cultural contexts.

The aim of this paper is to analyze language policies in the implementation of the Co-Officialization Law and to understand the processes that encouraged municipalities to carry out this legislative procedure. Considering Brazil\u27s history of instituting a monolingual policy in Portuguese, the process of co-officializing local languages represents a pioneering movement. The law provides for the transformation of entire municipalities into multilingual spaces, which includes: the issuance of official documents, assistance in public agencies, and adaptation of signs. To precisely examine the implementation process of this law, we decided to conduct a comparative study in two fundamentally different Brazilian municipalities: Bonfim / RR (which co-officialized Macuxi and Wapixana in 2014) and Santa Maria de Jetibá / ES (with a significant presence of descendants of European immigrants, speakers of the Germanic Pomeranian language, co-officialized in 2009). In the comparative study, unequal aspects were found in terms of economic, historical, and social factors. On the other hand, there is a parallel in the implementation of the Co-Officialization Law in the strengthening and the struggle of local language speakers for the right to express themselves in their preferred language.O objetivo desse trabalho é analisar as políticas linguísticas na implementação da Lei de Co-oficialização e compreender os processos que incentivaram os municípios a realizarem esse procedimento legislativo.
