Reconstruction beyond proto-languages in the middle Andes

    Get PDF
The perception that the numerous similarities in lexicon, phonology and structure which unite the Quechuan and Aymaran language families in the Middle Andes region are due to intensive language contact prior to the stage of their proto-languages, rather than to a common genetic source as was previously assumed, has made it possible to visualize some of the originally inherited characteristics of each of the two linguistic lineages. This new perspective opens up multiple fields of further investigation, for instance, (a) determining the directionality of loan words (mainly from Quechuan to Aymaran, and rarely the other way around); (b) reconstructing the the structural profile of each of the two lineages prior to the beginning of their contact relation; and (c) creating the conditions for a separate external comparison of each lineage with other language families and isolates in the wider surroundings. In more general terms, it now appears possible to access earlier stages in the historical development of the Quechuan and Aymaran than that of the two proto-languages, to locate the original homeland of each lineage in relation to the newly established chronology, and to speculate on the societal context of the initial contact

This study investigates the use of determiners in the interlanguage of deafs learning (written) Brazilian Portuguese (BP) as a second language (L2). Adopting the theoretical assumptions of the generative grammar, we assume the hypothesis that the Brazilian Sign Language (BSL) lexicalizes the determiner category (D) by means of a pointing sign, which encodes the reference of the noun, as well as the system of personal and demonstrative pronouns. The data of the interlanguage were provided by 11 deaf participants having the Brazilian Sign Language (BSL) as their first language (L1). They were enrolled in a semi-structured activity of language production in (written) Portuguese, having sentences in BSL as a reference. The participants were distributed in two groups, according to their level of proficiency in BP: G1 (basic) e G2 (intermediary). A relevant result is the presence of language development, as G2 displays a significant reduction in the use bare nouns (in which the determiner is absent). Regarding the use of the determiner, a higher rate in the use of the demonstrative pronoun was observed as compared to the definite article. This result is analised as L1 interference, given the presence of the ‘deictic’ feature on the D head in BSL.O estudo investiga o uso da categoria determinante na estrutura gramatical da interlíngua de surdos aprendizes de português brasileiro (PB) escrito como segunda língua. &nbsp

From a dialogical-discursive perspective (BAKHTIN, 1997,1995; SALAZAR-ORVIG, 1999, 2010; FRANÇOIS, 1994, 2009; DEL RÉ; MENDONÇA; DE PAULA, 2014a and 2014b), which takes into account discursive movements, the situational contexts, the interaction between the child and the other, the dialogue between discourses etc., in this work, we intend to investigate how argumentation and humor are related in the child\u27s speech, from the rupture / incongruity that takes place in the dialogue, analyzing the statements produced by two Brazilian children (G. and S., 24-42 months), both speakers of Brazilian Portuguese (PB), filmed in a situation of interaction with parents and in natural contexts . The initial results show that the counter-argument, in particular, has an important role, considering that it is at the moment of an opposition to the argument brought up by one of the interlocutors that a type of incongruity / rupture seems to arise in the speech and can be resolved in a playful and fun way.

Purpose: to assess the phonological aspects used in the speech of premature children. Methods: a descriptive observational study of spontaneous speech production in eleven premature children over a six-month period. They were male and female, had gestational age at birth between 24 and 35 weeks and, regardless of weight, were evaluated from the age of 12 to 25 months.  Initially, the baby\u27s chart was consulted, followed by speech-language anamnesis and analysis of spontaneous speech between child and mother in a play situation. Ethical standards were adhered to and a written informed consent was given.  The verbal productions of words were computed in tables and the vowel and consonantal segmental filling in tonic and atonic syllables were quantified. Results: among subjects, subject 2 was out of time in relation to the other children in terms of total words and consonant and vowel filling in all syllabic positions of the words produced. Subjects 1, 8, 10 and 11 stood out with statistical difference in the consonant segments present in the pre-tonic, tonic and post-tonic, resulting in words that are more intelligible. Conclusion: greater segment filling was seen in the stressed syllable.

Te taiao, te tinana, e rua, e rua: the environment and the human body

The title of this paper reflects a Māori[1] perspective to the world we live and move in and our interaction with the environment. Its literal translation, ‘The taiao (environment) and the tinana (human body) are kin’ is the underlying theme of this paper. In researching philosophies and narratives handed down by my ancestors, and those recorded by early ethnologists who came to Aotearoa/New Zealand, it becomes immediately apparent that the ancestors, through careful observation whilst living at one with the environment—its interconnectedness and infinite moods, fashioned a knowledge that everything in this world is connected through whakapapa (genealogy). The interconnected energies that dwell in Ranginui (Sky Father) ngā whetū (stars), momo ua (types of rain), ngā kapua (clouds), te hau (wind) and all weather patterns are all connected through a network of genealogies. On Papatūānuku (Earth Mother), ngā toka me ngā kōhatu (rocks and stones), te wai (water—fresh and salt), ngā rākau (trees), ngā ngārara (insects), ngā manu (birds) and animal life both on earth and in the oceanare all part of a genealogy that reflects the ancestors understanding of the natural world. In the ever-present concern of global warming, climate change and the growing awareness of the need to protect and respect our environmentthis perspective of connected genealogy will assist in providing a conceptual lens to encourage one to view the environment as a living organism, breathing with moods and emotions similar to the human body that is totally interconnected. Through an analysis of the linguistic terms placed on the land by my tīpuna (ancestors) in Aotearoa I will provide a unique perspective that individuals can utilise to solidify their own personal relationship to the taiao (environment), to Papatūānuku, to Ranginui and the energies that sustain life. This analysis may also provide a conduit for comparison or contrast of other indigenous perspectives towards the use of terms for both the environment and the body.   [1] The Māori people are the indigenous people of Aotearoa-New Zealand.O título deste artigo reflete uma perspectiva Māori para o mundo em que vivemos e nos movemos e a nossa interação com o meio ambiente.

    Get PDF
This paper presents the initial results of a preliminary investigation of a lesser-known language contact situation in the Upper Rio Negro: the variety of Nheengatu (Tupi-Guarani branch, Tupi family) spoken as a second language by Dâw elders (Dâw, Nadahup [formerly Maku] family)  who live in the village of Waruá (Upper Rio Negro Indigenous Area) opposite the town of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (Amazonas State, Brazil). This variety of Nheengatu is severely threatened, as it is no longer transmitted to the younger generations, who speak Dâw and Portuguese. The objective of this study is to create an audiovisual archive to register the use of Nheengatu amongst the Dâw elders as a historical document for the community and in order to investigate the linguistic details of this variety in the context of a broader study of linguistic variation within Nheengatu. The data analysed in this investigation have been taken from personal narratives recorded with six informants from Waruá village between July 2017 and July 2018. The phenomena found so far involve phonetics and phonology, e.g., vowel apocope that aligns Nheengatu syllables with the CVC patterns of Dâw, and some morpho-syntactic particularities, e.g., levelling in number and person paradigms and frequent use of differential object marking. In general, this features seem to be the influence of Dâw on the speakers’ Nheengatu. Additionally, we hope that the fact that Nheengatu is a second language for the Dâw elders may provide insights into the types of influence that may have occurred in the region’s historical lingua franca, the Lingua Geral Amazônica.

Manutenção e revitalização linguística no Canadá

At least seventy indigenous languages are spoken in Canada. Studies indicate that most Canadian indigenous languages are endangered, in large part, due to the low rate of transmission of these languages as a first language. However, while Canadian census data show a decline in the transmission of indigenous languages as a first language, studies suggest a consistent increase in the number of second language speakers, due in part to linguistic revitalization programs in the country. In this article I give a brief overview of initiatives to maintain and revitalize indigenous languages in Canada, with a particular focus on Kanien’kéha (Mohawk) immersion schools, which have managed to create many fluent speakers of this language. These speakers have in turn helped new generations of learners both in communities and in academia. I emphasize the power of small and large initiatives to further the preservation and maintenance of languages.

The aim of this paper is to present some brief theoretical reflections regarding the process of learning and teaching of writing text production. The reflections proposed here consider basically three aspects: a) concepts of writing; b) teaching practices possibly related to those concepts; and c) the four stages involved in writing text production: planning, writing, checking and re-writing. Theoretical reference is based on Koch; Elias (2010) work about concepts of writing, Dolz; Noverraz; Schneuwly (2004) about didactic sequence, Bakhtin (2003) regarding discursive genres, Sautchuk (2003) about dialogical production of written text, Serafini (2000) about how to write texts and Silva; Marcuschi (2017) about didactic sequence for teaching of writing. The stages involved in the process of written text production were exemplified considering the elaboration of an opinion article. We conclude that the organization of teaching activities considering a didactic sequence that involves the four stages of written text production (particularly the stages of planning and checking) as well as the knowledge of discursive genres and textual sequences can contribute to the improvement of learning and teaching process of abilities involved in written text production.O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar breves reflexões teóricas referentes ao processo de ensino-aprendizagem da produção textual escrita.

In the current scenario - where factors such as globalization, technological innovation, and human mobility are key points - global markets and broad sociopolitical events result in increasingly interconnected power structures and social relations. Given this perspective, the objective of our work is to present an interdisciplinary analysis, uniting perspectives of Law and Linguistics, by proposing a sociolinguistic reflection about the role of language in the process of social integration (CASTELLOTI and DIDIER, 2001) of immigrants, based on the new Brazilian legislation that supports these individuals. Our analysis is based on interpretive research. Since it is a current and constantly changing theme, much data is extracted from governmental institutions and broadcast news, combined with analysis from bibliographic research. We seek to demonstrate that the right to express oneself in one’s own language is a right constitutionally guaranteed in our order, since the concepto of language is intrinsically linked to the concepto of culture. Therefore, we defend that Brazilian intitutional lingusitic policies that aim to support migrant populations are a vital tool to ensure  the full exercise of  their citizenship. &nbsp
