In this paper, we reflect upon a collaborative research model in which language documentation and linguistic description research start with language (re)vitalization activities. We describe as a case study the project to revitalize the maqlaqsyals language, which is spoken by members of the Klamath-Modoc Tribes (USA). We show how linguistic work that results from initiatives centered on indigenous communities, their needs, their knowledge, and their values, help in the “decolonization” of linguistics and its areas of investigation.
For the last twenty years, two indigenous associations of the Kotiria (Wanano) people of the Upper Rio Negro region, Amazonas, have engaged in efforts to strengthen and maintain their language and culture. The Association of the Khumuno Wʉ’ʉ Kotiria Indigenous School (ASEKK), located in the village of Caruru-Cachoeira, promotes activities with the school community serving five villages in the Upper Rio Negro Indigenous Land, while the Association of the Kotiria People (APOK) works within the city of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, AM, seat of the “most indigenous municipality of Brazil”. We offer an overview of the history of these organizations: their concerns, actions, challenges and accomplishments, as well as the partnerships they have developed in their fight for recognition and strengthening of their linguistic heritage and cultural identity.
In the first decades of the 21st century, the Internet has been more present in the daily lives of an increasing number of individuals in Brazil and in the world – either through traditional websites, or through the use of online social networks and instant communication applications. In the linguistic sphere, the Web has a paradoxical role: while promoting access to hegemonic and prestigious languages, it also offers new possibilities for the revitalization and documentation of languages threatened with extinction. For each of these languages, being used on the Internet means occupying which is considered an important space of social, political and economic power in the “contemporary western world”. The aim of this paper is to outline an overview of the presence of minority languages on the Web, highlighting mainly their use in online social networks and in collaborative platforms, besides other initiatives that explore the possibilities opened by virtual tools for linguistic preservation. Finally, I conclude that the expansion of Internet access throughout the planet is a path of no return and, therefore, it is necessary to use effectively, competently and quickly, in favour of language preservation, the new resources that are developed.
The initial part of this conference develops and demonstrates that, within the study of language, diverse forms of knowledge have always coexisted, ranging from philosophical and historic approaches to theoretical and formal constructions, including the pre-theoretical descriptions and the applications in domains of great diversity. In the second part of the conference, there is a presentation of instruments of linguistic analysis that stem from the interaction between logic and mathematics. With regards to the current investigation, some examples of the contribution of genetic science are explained for a discussion on the nature of language, and the creationist and evolutionist perspectives are presented as fields of investigation for the acquisition of systems of knowledge, with special mention to the acquisition of language.
Armando Cardoso, SJ (1906-2002)
In this article I discuss Armando Cardoso\u27s philological work in the Monumenta Anchietana’s edition, his research with manuscripts and other documentary sources, the translation process and the organization of the collection. The theoretical model for this analysis, based on Linguistic Historiography, is the one proposed by Pierre Swiggers (2013), by which I discuss the \u27heuristic dimension\u27 of Anchieta\u27s work. Monumenta Anchietana is a collection of works by S. José de Anchieta, SJ (1534-1597) and biographical studies published by Loyola Editions in Brazil. The collection is not yet complete and some volumes have not yet been published. Jesuit missionary Anchieta was one of the most representative humanists of the 16th century in Brazil, having been a student of the Royal College of Arts of Coimbra in 1548, before coming to Brazil in 1553. He wrote literary, religious and historical works in four languages: Latin, Portuguese, Spanish and Tupi, indigenous language of the early days of colonization in Brazil. His works written in Latin are the main source for analyzing the reception of Classical Culture in 16th century Brazilian linguistic thought.
Review of the book Indigenous Languages and Universal Grammar.Resenha do livro Línguas Indígenas e Gramática Universal
The indigenous people Sakurabiat traditionally live in the northern part of Brazil, in the current state of Rondônia. For many years, the Sakurabiat language was not learned by children. Nowadays, only elderly people and some adults of more than 50 years old speak the traditional language of the group, around 12 people, and is therefore in serious danger of disappearing. Most of the Brazilian indigenous languages are in a situation of vulnerability (MOSELEY, 2010). Consequently, salvage and promotion of the indigenous languages and cultures have become increasingly urgent in both the indigenous communities and the academic community. In order to prepare for initiatives in this regard, this article reports on experiences of Sakurabiat language and culture rescue, based on language teaching in the indigenous school context. The Sakurabiat people had such experiences when they became conscious of the value of the traditional language for the community. This was triggered especially by the participation of young Sakurabiat in the indigenous teacher training course (Açaí Project) set up by the Education Secretary of the State of Rondônia (SEDUC-RO). The organization of traditional festivities as well as crafts workshops and language activities in the school were among the activities by the Sakurabiat carried out in order to rescue and to promote their traditional language and culture. The Sakurabiat educational experiences demonstrate the importance of indigenous formal education based on diversity, capable of motivating effective actions of valorization and preservation of traditional language and culture.
To vitalize a language is to give strength or vigor to the dynamics of its existence. It means having the language in the rituals of the shamans, in playground, in the telling of traditional stories, in the dances, in the songs, in the crafts, in the traditional clothing, in the paintings, in the everyday life of the community, even if it is used as a second language. This process has been experienced by the Kokama people of Brazil and Peru, through decisions that lead the language of their ancestors to occupy communicative spaces inside and outside the villages. In this paper, I describe the work for the vitalization of the Kokama language, which was presented in the “Viva Língua Viva” conference as part of the celebrations of the International Year of Indigenous Languages in 2019. I show how vitalization is linked to the conquest of our traditional land through language, as well as the occupation of physical and digital spaces in the 21st century. I describe several initiatives, like the Kokama Traditional Knowledge and Science and Knowledge Centers (known as Museu Vivo), the Lua Verde and Antonio Samias Centers, and the Atawanã Kuarachi Kokama and Tsetsu Kamutun Indigenous Education Centers, which are places that contribute to vitalize the language. I also discuss the development of digital applications created in collaborations with Kokama people from different generations, and have the goal of bringing the language to new domains. In this way, these initiatives can aid in the vitalization of the language, where children, young people and adults find the social function of language when expressing their culture through their speech.
The concepts, often used in Brazil, of alphabetization and “letramento” are discussed, and their insufficiency (as alphabetization alone does not guarantee skilled levels of reading and writing) and vacuity (regarding the cognitive processes involved) are criticized. It is advocated the use of literacy, which is common in Portugal, and corresponds to literacy and littératie in English and French-speaking countries, and to literacidad in some Spanish-speaking countries. Much more important than harmonizing the terminology is to bring to the educational world the scientific and neuroscientific knowledge about the development and acquisition of cognitive and literacy capacities as well as about the enormous influence social factors, in particular poverty, have on this process. Attention is drawn to the sterile debate that opposes the phonic method, based on scientific evidence, and the campaign, headed 50 years ago by Paulo Freire, for developing literacy among the poorest. Finally, the PISA statistics relative to Brazil are analyzed.
This paper presents a synthesis of the main results achieved in the final paper entitled “‘A gente tá apenas em construção, construindo nossa forma, tentando achar a forma ideal pra fazer uma educação diferenciada, e que nós queremos’: a Licenciatura Intercultural Indígena da UFSC e as políticas linguísticas”, which presents a review of the academic language policies associated with the Licenciatura Intercultural Indígena do Sul da Mata Atlântica course, and that consequently affect and reflect the language polices of the indigenous schools and communities. The data of this research were obtained at the “I Seminário de Língua Indígenas do Sul da Mata Atlântica: Guarani, Kaingang e Xokleng” and the analysis was conducted using the Licenciatura Intercultural Indígena students’ and teachers’ speech. Regarding the results, it was observed that even though some language policies, which aim the appreciation and the use of indigenous language, are already regulated, they are not well appreciated in practice and still demonstrate the absence of the indigenous teachers’ autonomy inside the classroom, both in basic and in higher education. Finally, this paper intends to contribute to the visibility of the indigenous populations, mainly concerning their voices.
