Sharing and Preserving Sociolinguistic Corpora on the U.S.-Mexico Border

Since William Labov outlined the methodology for the sociolinguistic interview in 1972, sociolinguistic corpora have been used widely in the field of sociolinguistics to study diverse speech communities and linguistic features. However, most of these invaluable sociolinguistic collections have been available only to the individual researcher or research group, and these data sets usually disappear from use with that individual scholar. More recently, there has been a push towards data sharing in sociolinguistics, reflective of data sharing and the open science movement in other fields. Still, accessible online sociolinguistic corpora are few and far between, in part due to the intense time commitment required to create, sustain, share, and preserve such collections. This paper reviews two accessible online sociolinguistic collections at the U.S.-Mexico border: the Corpus de Español en el Sur de Arizona [Corpus of Spanish in Southern Arizona] or CESA (Carvalho, 2012) and the Corpus Bilingüe del Valle [Bilingual Corpus of the Valley] or CoBiVa (Christoffersen & Bessett, 2019; Christoffersen & Ciller, 2024) in South Texas. We explore these two corpora as case studies for data sharing and preservation through collaboration by detailing the data collection and data management protocols and preservation plans. In doing so, we demonstrate how data sharing in sociolinguistics impacts accessibility, reproducibility, and the democratization of knowledge

Exploring Variation and Change in the Distant Past

This article explores the potential of analysing language variation and change in written records dating back to the earliest stages of the time period conventionally termed ‘historical’. In particular, it considers the suitability of Old Babylonian data, a Semitic language from the early II millennium BCE, as object of historical sociolinguistic investigation. A case study focuses on the representation of sibilants in texts from a relatively extensive corpus of letters. Its analysis is framed within the scope of testing the temporal limits of variationist approaches to language change and its uniformitarian premises. The study offers detailed linguistic insights from textual documentation going back nearly four thousand years, a period in which most languages spoken at that time remain undocumented (i.e., are ‘prehistorical’), and can only be inferred or reconstructed

The purpose of this article is to analyze a first instance sentence handed down by a magistrate in the Federal Court of Paraíba, using Ducrot\u27s Theory of Argumentation in Language as theoretical support. The aim was to study the polyphony of voices in legal texts, based on the observation of their textual organization. The analysis of this polyphony made it possible to point out possible strategies used by the legal operator in processing the text, the effects of meaning achieved and how the structure of the text was affected by the polyphony. &nbsp

Language and Identity in Historical Caucasian German

Varieties of German outside the German-speaking area in Europe are often in close contactwith surrounding languages and differ from Standard German with respect to variouslinguistic phenomena. We present a study on a diasporic variety of German spoken in theSouth Caucasus region (primarily in Georgia), a historically well established settler variety, which until recently had been assumed to be obsolete since WW II. In this contact variety, interaction with the Russian language plays an important role historically and up until today. The language use of this community can only be understood if its complex historical, socialand political development as a migrant community is taken into account, as it plays a crucialrole for the multilingual settings, the speakers\u27 multilingual competence and their languageattitudes (which in turn influence their language use).In our study, we take a historical perspective on Caucasian German, investigating contactphenomena from Russian in the Kaukasische Post, a German language newspaper publishedin Tbilisi/Tiflis (Georgia) between 1906 and 1922. Linguistic contact features serve toposition Caucasian German in its specific sociohistorical and geographic setting. We showhow this is achieved in different sections of the newspaper, with a special focus onadvertisments. To support and enrich our analyses, we also consider discussions on languagepolicies that were in place at the time, for example with respect to the role of German as asubject and a medium of instruction in local schools. In our conclusion, we discuss in what ways the analyzed data offer insight into languageattitudes and identity matters of the historical Caucasian German speech community

This article focuses on a particular way of applying Paulo Freire\u27s concept of reading the world to the live action of Snow White (Webb, 2025), specifically to the representation of the subject with dwarfism (the seven dwarfs). The reading of the world will be operated affected by concerns of the theories of Argumentative Semantics and Discourse Analysis, as we have developed. The objective is to deepen the concept of reading fairy tales through a social, political, argumentative and discursive perspective. For argumentative care, we will consider Oswald Ducrot and Marion Carel\u27s epistemologies on language and enunciation; for discursive care, we will consider the historicity of/in language and its use, proposed by Michel Pêcheux; for Paulo Freire\u27s care, we will consider a triple semantic temporality: a past of social and political struggle, a present of this struggle and a future perspective of this same struggle, mobilized by the concepts of preceding reading, subsequent reading and continuous reading. Reading a fairy tale, here a live action, is to produce socio-political meanings that, far from being simple entertainment, (re)signify social groups in light of their struggles, when they belittle certain subjects (here, subjects with dwarfism) and privilege others (here, subjects defending a certain uncritical, beautiful-European aesthetic).Este artigo debruça-se sobre um modo particular de aplicar o conceito de leitura do mundo, de Paulo Freire, ao live action de Branca de Neve (Webb, 2025), especificamente à representação do sujeito com nanismo (os sete anões).

The growing need for communication and the increasingly broad, creative, and complex use of language, combined with the constant transformations in Brazilian society, demand reading practices that require a more attentive and critical reader—especially when faced with advertising language. In this context, learning situations in Portuguese language classes must take place to foster the development of competent readers, particularly those capable of recognizing and reflecting on linguistic mechanisms and both explicit and implicit meaning effects in a wide range of texts. Accordingly, this article aims to present a reading proposal based on our analysis and reflection on the argumentative strength of argumentative operators and the meaning effects materialized in O Boticário\u27s 2020 Christmas campaign advertisement. To this end, we draw upon the studies of Dério, Nascimento, and Sales (2024); Bastos and Nascimento (2023); Nascimento (2022); Ducrot (2020); Koch (2023); among others. Methodologically, we are guided by interpretative-qualitative research of a propositional nature, employing theoretical-analytical procedures. Beyond contributing to studies in Argumentative Semantics applied to the teaching of Portuguese, we aim to promote reading competence through linguistic awareness of the use of argumentative operators in texts, thus considering the meaning effects these operators activate in advertising.

Pronominal anaphoric ambiguity is a linguistic phenomenon caused by the presence, in a sentence or period, of a pronoun that agrees in gender and number with two existing antecedent terms, one in the function of subject and the other in the function of verb complement. The relationship between the forms has an effect on the understanding of the meaning of the sentence, since there are two possible inferences to resolve pronominal anaphoric ambiguity. The investigation proposed by this study concerns the analysis of the influence of the logical information of conjunctions for the process of resolving anaphoric ambiguity in incomplete compound sentences in the active voice. We applied an online test of pronominal anaphoric ambiguity resolution with students of Youth and Adult Education - EJA. In the materials applied to the subjects who participated in this study, we correlated the responses to the pronominal disambiguation tasks with the logical information of conjunctions. The results of this study suggest that sentences that present Adversative and Conclusive logical relations obtained a significant difference in the average number of choices between the two candidates for anaphoric antecedents, with those with an adversative logical relation favoring the proximal and those with a Conclusive logical relation favoring the distal. In the same test, sentences with a Conclusive logical relation were those that obtained the lowest average response time to the test. These findings are evidence that sentences with a Conclusive logical relation allow anaphoric ambiguity to be resolved in a shorter average time, compared to sentences that have a different logical relation. &nbsp

Why Do Humans Have Linguistic Intuition?

People have spontaneous intuitions about sentence acceptability. These intuitions are critical for the scientific study of language, yet we have almost no understanding of why humans have them in the first place. There is, however, a prevailing and largely unquestioned assumption that humans have some intuitive sense of what is grammatical and what is not. Here I present a different analysis, grounded in theoretical and empirical knowledge from cognitive linguistics, cognitive psychology and evolutionary approaches to the mind. All stimuli perceived as communicative are interpreted as if they have the property of optimal relevance, and sentences are unacceptable when, and only when, they logically cannot have this property. One important corollary of this hypothesis is that there may be no particular cognitive capacity that functions to distinguish the grammatical from the ungrammatical. Linguistic intuitions are rather byproduct effects of core cognitive capacities for the interpretation of communicative stimuli. This byproduct hypothesis explains several otherwise surprising features of linguistic intuition in straightforward and parsimonious ways; it specifies how unacceptable sentences relate to visual illusions; and it aligns with a growing trend towards understanding many distinctive aspects of the human mind as products of biological adaptation to an especially social evolutionary ecology

The aim of this paper is to present the preliminary results of the development of a Baniwa-Koripako-Portuguese bilingual and bidialectal dictionary. Medzeniakonai (Baniwa-Koripako) refers both to the name of the indigenous people and to the language spoken in the communities of the Içana River and its tributaries of the Upper Rio Negro. This text discusses theoretical and practical issues surrounding the production of this type of lexical work, as part of a thesis defended at the University of Brasilia in 2023. It also aims to reflect on the importance of building a collective dictionary in the Medzeniakonai language and for indigenous languages in general. To this end, the research is articulated in the theoretical-methodological framework of lexicology and lexicography, based on the works of Ramirez (2001a, 2001b), Taylor (1991), Valadares (1993), and Souza (2012), who have done research on the Içana River, and Granadillo (2006), and González Ñáñez (2017), who have carried out research in Colombia and Venezuela.O objetivo do presente trabalho é apresentar o resultado preliminar sobre a construção de um dicionário bilíngue e bidialetal Baniwa-koripako-português.

The aim of this study is to investigate how the categorization process takes place in individuals with aphasia and dementia from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. To do this, we carried out an integrative review of 25 scientific articles that used experimental scientific methodology to discuss the subject. The “methodology”, “results” and “discussion” sections of each article reviewed served as the main sources of results for discussing the topic. The view of category adopted in this work is that of Rosch (1978) and Lakoff (1987) and for studies on aphasia, we adopted Ortiz (2010) and Mansur and Radanovic (2003). Among the results obtained after the review, 10 types of linguistic categorization were found among 3 main types of dementia, 2 main types of aphasia and other general ones, following methodological steps specific to each work or similar when the articles dealt with the same type of category. The results of this study conclude that, for the most part, individuals with aphasia or dementia suffer a greater or similar cost to the typical population in the production and comprehension processes when they are categorizing, so having a cognitive deficit, specifically aphasia or dementia, can interfere with linguistic activities that require the use of neurocognitive work.
