    Get PDF
This study examines the effect of trade openness on poverty in Nigeria. The study adopts autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to study the relationship between poverty and trade openness and other explanatory variables. Measures of poverty used for this study were per capita income and human development index. Consequently, two autoregressive models were specified and estimated in order to examine the effect of trade openness on these two measures of poverty. In the two models, trade related variables (exchange rate and foreign direct investment) were included in the model as explanatory variables along with trade openness which is the key explanatory variable in the two models. The result of the analysis shows that in the first model trade openness has significant positive effect on per capita income only in the long run, foreign direct investment has a positive effect on per capita income both in the long run and in the short run while exchange rate has a negative effect on per capita income in the short run. In the second model, trade openness does not have a significant effect on human development, foreign direct investment has a significant and positive effect on human development while exchange rate has a significant negative effect on human development. It is recommended that the government should ensure that trade policies are mutually beneficial to Nigeria and the trading partner and that some specific bilateral trade relations are well negotiated. It is also recommended that the government should create the enabling environment to attract foreign direct investment into the Nigerian economy because of the positive gains on poverty reduction as shown in the findings

Consequently, the paper discovered the actual reasons for the invasion of Ukraine and those behind it, the internal problem facing Ukraine before the invasion, the potential threat of the invasion to global peace, the actual nation to blame for the invasion and the effects of Russian/Ukrainian war on the Nigerian economy. Get PDF
Political thinkers in Africa saw colonial imperialism and racial inequality as related issues that needed a coordinated approach on a continental level. Their philosophical approach aimed to provide freedom fighters with moral, political, and financial support. The study utilized secondary data with a qualitative approach, which enabled data to be derived from various sources, including documentary records. The findings showed that the roots of contemporary African political thought can be traced back to the cultural nationalism, negritude, and pan-Africanism of great African political thinkers like Marcus Garvey, William Du Bois, and others who lived in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The study identified that African political theory offers workable solutions to the continent's many political, economic, social, and cultural issues. It differs depending on historical contexts and the dynamic political environments of Africa and the rest of the globe. It was also discovered that for sixty years now after independence, the democratic journey has remained tortuous because of the reckless pursuits of power by the political class. A way out of this predicament quest for social inclusion, equality, and self-respect. The study recommends the need to address good governance that would position fundamental governance and create an enabling environment for self-participation, collective services, a driving force, and responsiveness to public demands

Estimated billing system has been adopted ever since the manual metering system became moribund in Nigeria. It is a corporate crime that has been paltry explored in the corpus of Criminology. Extant findings on estimated billing have exonerated utility companies while classifying consumers of electricity as perpetrators of power theft. This study set out to investigate the effects of estimated billing on consumers in residential houses/business centres in Wukari town, and explore the causes and/or factors leveraging the adoption of the payment platform for energy charges as well as offer feasible ways of addressing the problem. The study adopted survey design with its accompanying instruments like questionnaire and indepth interview. A sample size 131 was determined using the Cochran’s formula for smaller population. Only 128 copies of the questionnaires were retrieved and found useable at 97.8% return rate. Ten (10) persons made up the panel of indepth interview. Descriptive and inferential statistics like percentages and linear regression were used respectively to address the research questions and test the hypothesis. Findings reveal that estimated billing has affected consumers by charging them above their actual energy consumption. This is in addition to triggering physical confrontation between consumers and marketers of power companies as well as discouraged consumers from making full payment of estimated charges for a month under review. However, the quest to generate revenue accounted for the adoption estimated billing by Power Company among other factors like duration of power supply and the unwillingness of consumers to acquire prepaid meters. It is recommended among others the adoption of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to gauge consumers’ energy consumption pending the provision of prepaid meters and that National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) should intensify efforts in the provision of free and/or subsidized prepaid meters to consumers

This paper interrogated the nexus between leadership and national development mainly on a theoretical perspective. Hence leadership in a context of nation[1]building is an independent variable; it could be a determinant to national development. This paper principally used qualitative technique to interrogate the theoretical nexus of leadership as an independent variable and national development as a dependent variable. Scholars have used their different orientation to theorize the purpose of leadership in different societies. In whatever context, the qualities of a good leader are universal. In spite of the divergence perspective of scholars in theorizing leadership, the emphasis is the virtues being it moral, religious, political, economic, cultural, or otherwise; the essence is to arrive at good leadership. Thus, this paper sees leadership as an end itself but not a means to an end

The paper revealed that the abduction of school children in Nigeria could have been prevented with intelligence gathering and applying of crime prevention mechanism through early warning signs. It argued that an early warning system is designed for the identification of crime chronic hot spots or/ and temporary hot spot. This paper has established abduction of school children in Nigeria is a threat to national security. And it is preventable with the aid of Early Warning System which it could be temporary hot, hot spots or chronic hot spot. The combined hot spot program first allocates resources to chronic hot spots up to a maximum size in the area and then applies the EWS to remaining areas outside of the chronic hotspots, optimizing over grid sizes and rule thresholds. This submission differs from previous studies, which mostly and primarily advocated for the use of chronic hot spots for crime prevention. But this paper is of the view that a combination of temporary spots, hot spots and chronic hot spots essential recipes for intelligence gathering in the prevention of abduction of school children in Nigeria
