    Get PDF
Poverty eradication remains a critical global goal, as reflected in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 1: No Poverty. Despite progress in reducing global poverty rates, significant challenges persist. This study therefore examines the role of television jingles in poverty eradication and national development. Drawing on the principle of Media Development theory, the study investigates the impact of television jingles on raising awareness about poverty, shaping public perceptions, and motivating behavioral change. Through a mixed-methods approach, including a literature review and conceptual review, the research demonstrates the significant influence of television jingles in addressing poverty-related issues. The results of this research emphasize how television jingles have a noteworthy effect on increasing awareness about poverty and rallying support for initiatives aimed at reducing it. With their persuasive abilities, television jingles can grab viewers' attention, influence their perspectives, and motivate them to take action in the fight against poverty. Suggestions for enhancing the impact of television jingles in poverty eradication and national development are provided. Policymakers should consider implementing supportive policies, including financial incentives and regulatory frameworks, to encourage the production and dissemination of socially impactful television jingles

The paper examines the contribution of Jaja Wachukwu, the First Nigerian Minister for Foreign Affairs and his contributions to Nigeria’s Foreign Policy. The paper is situated against thebackground of the prominent role he played as the Nigeria foreign affairs Minister which however has not gone unrecognized. Thus, as a foreign affairs minister, Nigerian foreign policy was characterized by a focus on Africa as a regional power and by attachment to several fundamental principles: African unity and Afrocentrism; capability to exercise hegemonic influence in the region: peaceful settlement of disputes; non-alignment and non-intentional interference in the internal affairs of other nations; and regional economic cooperation and development. Through his excellent contribution Nigeria gained considerable fame and respect in the international system. Wachuku, gave a more credible and emphatic attention to the concept of Afrocentric and good neighborliness. For him, any Nigeria’s foreign policy that does not connote the interest of the common man in the continent of Africa is unrealistic. The paper concluded that Jaja Wachuku and his roles as the first foreign affairs Minister cannot be overemphasized. Jaja may have passed away about two decades ago, but his contributions to Nigeria's foreign policy remain a big game-changer in Nigeria’s history. The paper is however divided into four sections, the first being the breakdown of the work, followed by the introduction, his biography, and the last section deals extensively with his contributions to Nigeria's foreign policy

Promoting equity and egalitarian society is very vital for enhancing human development, and one of the most powerful instruments for this purpose is education, which boosts people’s self-confidence, equips them for their future; to act responsibly in making better choices and relevant contributions in their society. Evidence exists of considerable problems with bullying and bullied children in secondary schools that undermine these efforts as a result of their long-lasting effects for the victims, which include hindrance in learning and advantages of higher education in their survivors. The psychological damage and pain caused by bullying can become almost indelible and affect one’s future. This article using 40 undergraduate students of Michael Okpara university of Agriculture, Umudike and 112 students from two secondary schools, (Nigeria), examines the effects of secondary school bullying on their tertiary education, and the effectiveness of peer-mediation as early intervention. The sample was purposively selected from four colleges in the university. The study indicates that bullying experienced in secondary school could adversely affect the self-esteem and performance of the survivors at tertiary education level and importance of earlier intervention to improve learning

UNCHARTED WATERS: ANALYZING PRESIDENT BUHARI'S DIPLOMATIC ADAPTATIONS TO INTERNATIONAL SECURITY THREATS, 2015-2023

    Get PDF
This study examines how Nigeria’s foreign policy under President MuhammaduBuhari adapted to the global challenges that emerged from 2015 to 2023, filling a gap in the literature on adaptive foreign policy theory in the African context. The study is rooted in the theoretical framework of adaptive foreign policy theory, which asserts the need for nations to flexibly adjust their foreign policy objectives and approaches in response to evolving international conditions. The study utilizes a literature-based approach, integrating academic and non-academic sources, to provide a comprehensive analysis of President Buhari's diplomatic adaptations during this critical period. Three overarching themes emerge from the thematic analysis: strategic responses to the US-China Trade War and resultant global economic disruptions, concerted efforts in stabilizing regions affected by coups and political instability in Africa, and a balanced approach towards the Covid-19 pandemic encompassing global health security and national well-being.The findings reveal Nigeria's adeptness in managing the economic impact of the US-China Trade War by diversifying economic partnerships, thereby bolstering economic stability. Additionally, the study underscores Nigeria's diplomatic dexterity in tackling regional instability through a complex foreign policy, which includes diplomatic negotiation with coup leaders, judicious use of sanctions, and strategic deployment of troops. Moreover, Nigeria's response to the Covid-19 pandemic reflects a multifaceted approach that prioritizes both global health security and national welfare. While the study sheds crucial light on Nigeria's global strategy and its adaptability in safeguarding its interests, certain limitations must be acknowledged. The examination is delimited to a specific period and context of Nigeria's foreign policy, potentially limiting its generalizability. Furthermore, reliance on secondary data sources may introduce bias or inaccuracies. To enhance the robustness of these findings, future research should explore different periods, contexts, data sources, and methodological approaches, while considering diverse theoretical frameworks or perspectives

    Get PDF
Growing apprehension has emerged in the northern regions of Nigeria regarding the escalating activities of bandits. Consequently, this investigation was conducted to assess the impact of banditry on both human and food security in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State. The study adopted the Routine Activity Theory as its theoretical framework, emphasizing the prevalence of motivated offenders, the presence of suitable targets, and the absence of guards as key tenets. According to the theory, these factors played pivotal roles in the surge of brigandage activities in the study area. Conducted as a descriptive survey, the research employed a triangulation approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods. The focus was on Shiroro Local Government Area, situated near the border of Niger and Kaduna State, which has witnessed a notable increase in bandit criminalities. The study revealed a distressing percentage of human casualties, accompanied by a significant rise in hospitalizations and trauma resulting from frequent attacks in the region. These incidents have had severe repercussions on human security. Additional findings highlighted the loss of farmlands, livestock, and other animals, along with the closure of markets and businesses, substantially impacting food security in the area. As a recommendation, the study suggests that the government deploy its security forces robustly to curb various forms of armed insurgencies. This involves providing advanced detection equipment in the forested lands of the study area to effectively address the prevailing challenges

The culture of sculpture parks is as old as art itself and exists in almost all communities across the globe. Such parks, their grandeur, serene outlook, artistic presence, and representations of a plethora of socio-political and economic issues mean a lot, especially to the people associating with them. Using an art historical analysis, primary and secondary data in the form of oral interviews, and extant literature, this paper studies the historical development of the Sculpture Garden of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria focusing mainly on its features, and functions, particularly within the University community.  Although the Garden emerged from the necessity of providing space for the reservation and preservation of the outdoor sculptures produced by students ofthe Fine Art Department of the University, this paper argues that it now blossoms to provide a conducive atmosphere for the exhalation of emotion, empathy, love, and peaceful contemplation. This is absent in the few previous studies conducted on the Garden. This paper concludes that the Garden also serves many purposes different from art and aesthetics, including the proliferation of businesses while providing a serene environment for meetings, lectures, and shelter for lovers
