FISCAL BALANCE AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

    Get PDF
This study analyzed the effects of fiscal balance on sustainable economic development in Nigeria from 1981 to 2022. Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model was employed in estimating the variables. The ARDL results indicated that the relationship between fiscal balance and sustainable economic development followed a long-run path. The study found that fiscal balance to GDP ratio, external debt to export ratio, and public debt service to revenue ratio had negative impact on growth rate of real GDP per capita (GDPgr). Total debt stock to GDP ratio had positive effect on GDPgr. Domestic debt to domestic investments ratio and recurrent expenditure to GDP ratio exerted negative and non-significant effect on GDPgr. Debt for gross fixed capital formation as a percentage of GDP and trade openness exerted positive and significant effect on GDPgr. The study recommended that the government should focus on viable capital investments that have the potential to generate revenue that can service public debt in order not to create debt that are not sustainable. Government should take proactive measures to ensure that public debt is employed in key productive sectors of the economy to boost domestic production and enhance export receipts in foreign currency capable of repaying the externally borrowed funds. There is need for government to reduce recurrent expenditures since it does not lead directly to revenue generation, capital formation, savings and investment in such manner that it would increase economic assets, boost production, and promote sustainable economic development

This research delves into the correlation between women's labour force participation and digital financial inclusion, while also elucidating the obstacles that impede women's access to digital finance. Our database is derived from the Global Findex database, 2021 edition, and we have mobilised a microeconomic database covering 14,281 African women. based on polls conducted in 29 African nations that are nationally representative. The empirical findings are analysed using the Probit model estimate methodology. According to our research, women's engagement in the labour market is favourably correlated with financial inclusion through digital channels more so than through traditional ones. It was discovered that formal financial services channels had a major and advantageous effect on women's labour market involvement. According to our research, women encounter a number of barriers when attempting to obtain financial services via digital and traditional channels. Non-voluntary impediments in the conventional financial inclusion channels are among these barriers. Nonetheless, these obstacles become less severe as a woman's income rises. Women frequently encounter particular challenges when it comes to digital financial inclusion, including the high cost of mobile financial services, a lack of funds, and restricted access to cellphones. By examining the effect of digital financial inclusion on women's labour force participation in African nations and identifying obstacles to women's digital financial inclusion based on individual-level data, the study adds to the body of existing work. It recommends that in order to boost women's engagement in the labour market, African governments should increase financial inclusion for women through digital channels

A prosperous democracy is only possible when a free and fair election is achieved. If resources and potentials of the nation will be properly maximized, it will begin with an election without intimidation or harassment. The voters should be allowed to freely vote for the candidate and political parties of their choice. Searching through history, it has been discovered that there has been no general election in Nigeria since independence in 1960 that has not been characterized by election violence, which has also led to a serious crisis, violence, disputations, and even bloodshed despite the law governing the electoral process in Nigeria. It is therefore pertinent to investigate the reasons why it has been impossible for Nigeria as a nation to achieve a credible election since inception. Therefore, this paper outlines the common challenges of election and why the political actors prefer electoral violence instead of a free and fair election. Using both primary and secondary data, that is, the historical analysis of data, from different scholarly works, this paper found out that it is germane to analyze the reasons why elections in Nigeria can never be credible and possible solutions, with specific focus on the 2011 and 2015 general elections from the comparative analysis perspectives. The credibility of election has always been on paper, but obviously the actions of the people involved is the direct opposite of what the law says. No doubt, there is need for government to place priority on non-inference in electoral matters, the role of judiciary and re-orientation of politicians, also systems and institutions should work in Nigeria like other advanced countries

    Get PDF
Desertification is the reflection of the environmental problem facing Nigeria today, it is estimated that the country is losing about 350,000 hectares to desertification annually, affecting almost the northern part of the country.Series of government efforts were made to address the issue but due to the gap between policy and implementation, the situation keep advancing to southwards at the rate of 1.5 km per year. Thus, desertification is a growing ecological problem, causing economic losses, threatening national unity, as well undermining the country’s national security. The purpose of this research are  to: (1) examine the role of climatic variability and human factors to  desertification and its (desertification) impact to national security; (2) suggest appropriate measures to address desertification for sustainable peace between farmers and herdsmen.  The research is situated within the theoretical framework of Political Economy Approach, to explain economic issues as the primary cause of tension and conflict between Farmers and Herdsmen in their struggle for economic survival. The method in obtaining data for this research was mainly through secondary. Two major findings emerged from the research; (1) Desertification a source of conflict and threat to national security and (2) Strategic intervention to curb desertification for sustainable peace. The research recommends the adoption all the strategic intervention measures to counter climate change and excessive human activities toward the successful recovery of the land productivity for sustainable peace

The primary objective is to identify and analyze these challenges while exploring potential strategies for support and empowerment. Guided by the theoretical framework of liberal feminist theory, which emphasizes gender equality and women's rights. A sample size of 374 Nigerian mothers on academic journey from various universities was selected using a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires, while qualitative data were obtained via in-depth interviews. Findings reveal that traditional gender roles significantly limit the time and energy women can dedicate to academic pursuits. Institutional barriers, such as inadequate childcare facilities and inflexible working hours, further exacerbate these challenges. Economic pressures and the high cost of childcare add to the financial burden, while psychosocial stress of juggling multiple roles negatively impacts mental health and academic performance. The study emphasized the urgent need for policy reforms and supportive measures within academic institutions. Recommendations include the implementation of family-friendly policies, establishment of support networks, and promotion of women's empowerment programs. These steps are essential for a more equitable academic environment, enabling Nigerian women to successfully balance motherhood and academic careers

    Get PDF
This paper examined the effectiveness and efficiency of the Nigeria counter-terrorism approach in the North Eastern region of Nigeria from 2009 – 2021. The Nigeria counter-terrorism strategies have not effectively eradicated the Boko Haram sect; they have strategically continued the wanton destruction of lives and properties, resulting in an unprecedented threat to Nigeria's national security. Nigerian counter-terrorism strategies have depended heavily on the kinetic approach. The discussion applied Sir Gerald Templer's Heart and Mind counter-insurgency theory. The paper employed a quantitative approach to data collection and analysis. The paper, therefore, discovered that the Nigeria counter-terrorism strategies in the northeast have been ineffective and inefficient, as evidenced by the responses of 32% of respondents. The paper concludes that reliance on the kinetic approach, disconnection between policy and implementation, poor utilization of modern technology, poor inter-agency collaboration, and lack of morality and motivation are the major factors that have impinged the effectiveness and efficiency of Nigeria counter-terrorism approach in the North-East. The paper recommends winning the heart and minds of the general population and a less kinetic approach in addition to providing modern equipment, inter-agency collaboration, and feedback on policy implementation as the panacea for Boko Haram terrorism
