BREAKING GENDER STEREOTYPES: A CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Get PDFThe distributional structure of the world's languages is heavily influenced by gender stereotypes (lewis and Lupyan, 2020) and have been demonstrated to be stable over time, with relatively few changes to the fundamental gender roles (Haines 2016). This contributes to difficulty in communicating effectively. This paper, specifically identify the ways gender stereotypes can create barriers to effective communication, the negative implications of these barriers as well as propose strategies for breaking down these stereotypes and improving communication outcomes. Drawing strength from Gender and Communication theory, the paper explores how societal norms, media representations, power dynamics, and institutional practices influence communication patterns and hinder the breaking of gender stereotypes. Women are sometimes referred to, as the weaker sex because they are more easily subjugated by strong, physically dominant men who are also able to support their family. It discovered that stereotypes of these nature can lead to a number of barriersincluding disrespect, invisibility, discrimination and microaggressions as people may make subtle, yet harmful comments or behaviours that reinforce gender stereotypes, and hindering effective communication. The paper, therefore, recommends that it is important to be aware of the ways that gender stereotypes can impact communication by first, examining our own biases and assumptions as individuals, and organisations, about gender roles in communication. It is also important to challenge these stereotypes in order to create a more inclusive and equitable communication environment
EFFECT OF ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES STRIKE ON THE PSYCHOSOCIAL WELLBEING OF UNDERGRADUATES IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA
Get PDFEducation is necessity for the proper development of both individuals in particular and the nation at large. However, recurring strikes of ASUU has not being without detrimental effects and consequences whether to the students or to the union members themselves. This study examined the effect of ASUU strikes on the psychosocial well-being of university students in Nigeria.A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and the target population were undergraduate students of University of Lagos. A simple random sampling was used to select 396 students as respondents for the study. A self-developed questionnaire was employed as the research instrument. The research questions were answered using descriptive statistics of frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. The result showed that the respondents disagree that ASUU strike has an effect on the emotional well-being of students (average mean 2.45 and SD=1.015). They also disagreed that the ASUU strike had an effect on their mental status (average mean 2.32 and SD=1.02). It was also found that the respondents agreed that ASUU strike had an effect on their social actualization (average mean 2.60 and SD=.95) and also affected their personal growth as students (average mean 2.64 and SD=.97). The study recommended that there is need for ASUU to find alternative method of registering their grievances and expectations from the government. There is also the need for government to put the well-being of affected students into consideration in their negotiation with ASUU, in order to avoid future occurrence of strikes

The study of the connection between leadership and good governance for national development has become essential with the restoration of democratic governance in Nigeria. In the first ten years of Nigeria Fourth Republic, leadership and good governance has faced a number of problems. Political leadership has been severely hampered by corruption, electoral fraud, resource mismanagement, and underdeveloped infrastructure. This paper examines the failure of governance and the challenges of leadership for national development in Nigeria. It also x-rayed the concepts of leadership, good governance and development. The method of data collection for this work is secondary data. The paper recommended the use of electronic voting systems and the demonstration of material and human security as solutions to problems. Others include removing the immunity provision for those holding political office and reorienting the country. The paper concluded that transparent, committed and transformational leadership is highly required for good governance and sustainable development in Nigeria

ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES CLIMATE CHANGE: AN EXPOSITION OF HERDSMEN TERRORISM IN TIVLAND OF BENUE STATE
Get PDFThis paper is an attempt to examine the scramble for environmental resources as a precipitating factor in the rise in herdsmen activities in Nigeria. The paper is informed by the fact that since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been an astronomic increase in the number of herdsmenactivitiesthat have resultantly led to the destruction of lives and properties. Scholars have identified a lot of factors that must inform the wanton destruction of villages and communities by maundering herdsmen in Nigeria. Although, environment factors are interrogated as exacerbating agents, literature on the nexus between the scramble for environmental resources, climate change and the seasonal changes that have characterized the activities of herdsmen have remained feeble. Thus, the work is aimed at contributing to the existing literature on the impact of environmental factors on conflicts in Tivland of central Nigeria. Using both qualitative and quantitative sources of historical data, the paper establishes that the struggle for environment resources coupled with climate change have informed the unwarranted killing, maiming and ransacking of Tiv communities by herdsmen. This, the paper argues, is eminent in the changes in the occurrence of these conflicts. Before now, clashes between herders and farmers was witnessed between the periods of December to March, owing largely to changes in environments in the Sahel region. However, with the continuous environmental changes that are evident with desert encroachment and silting of the lake chad basin, the demography of the conflicts has changed to an all year around conflict. To mitigate these conflicts, the paper advocates for environmental campaigns on the impact of environmental factors on Herders-Farmers conflicts and calls on religious leaders to dissuade the minds of their adherents about the religious motives of the conflicts. This will ultimately erase the fear of cultural imperialism that have constituted as a knock in the wheel of efforts in addressing the herdsmen malady

The research findings highlight the importance of integrating PR into DRR initiatives to shape public perceptions, raise awareness, and foster a culture of resilience. The study identifies key PR strategies such as risk communication, community engagement, and partnerships as effective tools for promoting DRR. It emphasizes the need for tailored PR approaches that consider diverse contexts and target audiences. The research concludes that comprehensive PR strategies can support and strengthen global disaster risk reduction efforts by safeguarding communities from the impacts of disasters and promoting sustainable development. The study recommends the integration of PR into DRR policy frameworks, the utilization of social media platforms for risk communication, and the establishment of partnerships with media organizations and community groups. The study adopted quantitative approach in analysing data gathered from Primary and Secondary sources of historical methods. Published works and other documents were consulted from Libraries. And data from Primary and Secondary sources were compared during analysis.
The findings of the study were that:
Traditional Political Leaders Emergence played significant roles in the allocation of land.
The Emergence of Oba Ibrahim Agbana Agie with the support of the Colonial Master influenced his acceptance of Colonial village reorganisation exercise in Isanlu kingdom.
The settlement pattern of Isanlu kingdom which was championed by Oba Ibrahim Agbana Agie led to the emergence of the new Isanlu kingdom
The relationship between the old villages and the modern ones became cordial and brought development to Isanlu kingdom
The urge to move from the village to the place where social amenities were provided by government and the Community led to the desolation of some villages.
The practical implication was that migration of people to urban areas led to the extinction of some villages like Igbo odoko, Amuro, Okoloke etc
The study therefore recommended that migration of people to urban centres must be adequately monitored and checked to around extin of towns and villages in Nigeria
THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ADVOCACY ON DRUG ABUSE AMONG THE YOUTHS IN OWO LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Get PDFThis paper examined Social Media as Advocate for Sensitising the Youth in Owo Local Government on the Consequences of Drug Abuse. This paper employed Agenda setting theory. Moreover, this study adopted survey design method and Owo local government areawas selected as area of the study. The population of the study was 341,400and this consisted of the total population of the selected area. However the study considered 400 participants which make up the sampling size and this was derived from 341,400entire populations of the selected local government areas through Taro Yamane formula. The findings of this study revealed that, social media advocacy has played vital roles in sensitising the youth on the negative effects of drug abuse. The study further revealed that, attitudinal change, public enlightening on the effects of drug abuse are necessary tools to reduce or eradicate drug abuse in the study area. Finally, the study recommends that, media should give much preference to issues relating to drug abuse as it will help to sensitise the general public on the negative effects of drug abuse. That, government at all level should consider social media as a functional medium of sensitising the general public on issue relating to drug abuse onpersonal health
CRISIS OF DEMOCRACY, POLITICAL DISTRUST AND AFRO-PESSIMISM IN NIGERIA POLITICS; THE FOURTH REPUBLIC IN FOCUS

The introduction of democracy into African society which in time replaced the old African political system, However, even after political independence majority of African society continued with this same western political system which was seem as been more advance in providing equal opportunity, collective responsibility, human rights advancement, state development, etc. However, there have been a repression, backsliding and crisis in the democracy of some states. Crisis of democracy are the threats to democratic principles. Huntington (1975) sees it as the excesses of government rule and citizenry repressions. Poor governance and "bad" politics in African countries as the personalized nature of rule, the failure of the state to advance and protect human rights, the tendency of individuals to withdraw from politics, and the extreme centralization of power in the hands of few people are the basis of the crisis of politics. The crisis in democracy has therefore expounded distrust, pessimism and skeptical relationship between the political elite and the citizenry. The research applies the quantitative research methodology. Further, the constructive theory of idea was employed to show the relationship between the crisis of democracy, distrust and afro-pessimism. More, the research found out that the historical trend of corruption, political repression, maladministration, political and ethnic crisis etc. are the factors mitigating against democracy. The research thereforerecommends that succinct and apt application of democratic principles and the end to political and administrative corruption is the major way out for solving Nigeria’s crisis of democracy
