The researchers examined the perception of public relationship of the Nigeria police as a law enforcement institution among Benin residents. The study is anchored on the Systems Theory to access and discuss relevant literatures on the study. Using the survey research method, data for this work was obtained through the use of structured questionnaire. The sample size was 384 respondents who were sampled using the multi-stage sampling technique. The collected data was analyzed using frequency counts and simple percentage method and presented in tables. The study found that the police as an institution are important for maintenance of law and order in the public but the relationship between the police and the public is very bad. Therefore, most importantly the study recommended, among others, the need for Edo State Police Command to put up a public relations programme on the radio and television to enlighten the public on the importance of police public relations, highlight the activities of the police and elicit the support of the public

This article examines the consequences of kidnapping on the community. It contributes to the current body of literature on the menace by looking closely at how kidnapping affects the community -- an aspect that previous studies have ignored. Kidnapping exerts enormous and far reaching economic and social costs. It induces and creates a palpable ambience of fear and despairs for all citizens and stultifies economic growth and hinders sustainable development. This study adopted a mixed method, administering structured questionnaires, in-depth and key informant interviews were conducted with Traditional Rulers, Religious leader, Zamfara State Community Protection Guard (ZSCPG) personnel, Military and police officers, and Victim of Kidnapping in Zurmi, Zamfara state. The data revealed majority of the respondents believe that the consequences of kidnapping on Zurmi community are enormous including: emotional depression, anxiety, psychological trauma, and an experience of economic hardship, joblessness after victims’ release, abject poverty, anxiety, depression and trauma. The research adopted the Rational Choice Theory (RCT) as its theoretical frame of reference to explain the menace of kidnapping and its consequences on the community. RCT sees individuals as rational actors, capable of making their own choices, which includes choosing to commit crime. Before kidnappers go into the menace, they must have weighed the options and concluded more rewards than punishment. The study offered recommendations to address problems of kidnapping in the study area. Among them is the need for the federal government in collaboration with the Zamfara state government, to review the current strategy of dealing with the issue of kidnapping in Zurmi, Zamfara state especially and Nigeria generally.  In particular, there is the need to explore the extant laws and the extent to which they are being enforced with a view to establishing their efficacy

Locality as an established place one resides, and stereotype originally demoted a solid metallic printing plate containing stock image that is difficult to change once cast was measured with Gender Stereotype Scale (GSS) developed by Sekhar & Parameswari (2020), and voting attitude as the consistent manner of feeling and beliefs of how a person views the electoral process that predispose one to act in a certain way during voting was measured using Attitude to Voting Scale (AVS) developed by Obiechina (2009). Two hypotheses was formulated and tested, two hundred and six (206), (volunteered (62) and drawn (144)) participants using accidental and convenience sampling technique from eight states within four geo-political regions (East, South, West and North) of the country (Anambra, Abia, Cross River, Bayelsa, Ondo, Oyo. Kanu and Kaduna) participated in the study. They were 122 males and 84 females with their age ranged between 27-59 years, average mean age of 30.69 and standard deviation age of 4.63. The study design was cross-sectional, correlational and hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used as the statistical package. Results of the data analysis shows that gender, locality and stereotype significantly (β = .36*; t = 4.09, p< .01; β = .37*; t = 4.66, p< 0.1 and β = .26; t = 4.69, p< .01) predicted the voting attitude of the studied participants. These significant results were discussed alongside with the literature reviewed, implications and recommendation were made

DOES HEALTH EXPENDITURE IMPACTS ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NIGERIA?

    Get PDF
A nation with healthy people is considered a wealthy nation. This study is designed to evaluate the impact of health expenditure on education attainment and economic growth in Nigeria. Most empirical studies in literature pay little or no attention to this area but majorly focus on how people achieve better health when there is economic growth. This could be as a result of the general consensus that economic growth leads to improved health status while the attention was not given to whether causality exists in the reverse direction. This study is carried out to breach this gap. Autoregressive conditional Heteroskedasticity regression analysis was employed and the result shows that health expenditures and education attainment are important determinants of economic growth in Nigeria while life expectancy rate has negative impact on growth for the period covered by the study. As a result, the following policy measures are suggested among others that government should encourage education attainment through improve education spending in the economy, increase expenditures on health provisions, induce the level of education attainment and place priority on improve health spending to enhance economic growth

    Get PDF
The phenomenon of climate change is providing a melting point to the global community through its pervading and undeniable implications for life on planet earth. The overwhelming impact of this on human interface, no doubt raises concerns that cuts across creed, colour, religion, and regional calibrations. It is generally believed that change remains a constant in human affairs; and all creatures anticipate change in their negative and positive configurations. Climate change is the response of nature to the increasing intervention and interference of man in the natural ecosystem, leading to fluctuations in average global temperatures often described as global warming. The implications of this in the long run remains unpredictable but the effect of this in contemporary times is orchestrating outcomes that offers no heritage of good to all and sundry. This ranges from decreased precipitation to deforestation and desertification, the poleward shift of vegetation and its impact on animal populations, the unmitigated rise in sea levels among others. This study interrogates the concept of climate change in the light of national security with the commitment to underscore its implication for sustainable development in Nigeria. Historical materialism offered the theoretical framework for this investigation under the methodological philosophy of qualitative analysis as obtainable in social inquiry. The study unearthed the economic effects of climate change, and underscored the historical, structural and institutional factors that explains why third world countries are more susceptible to climate change. Such factors like poor and weak governance structures, endemic conflict, among others negatively exacerbate the challenge of climate change in these climes. It was on the basis of this that it interrogated the polemics of climate change to national security, and the unmitigated implications of this to sustainable development in Nigeria. It offered the blueprints on the way forward with a modest conclusion

    Get PDF
Maintenance of minority languages in an urban cosmopolis is a huge challenge given the multiplicity of ethnic groups some of which are numerically dominant. Several studies have been carried out on maintenance of native languages in urban centers, but none has been undertaken on Efik in Lagos, Nigeria. Consequently, this study examines the state of Efik language in Lagos where the Efik are a minority group with a view to estimating language use and attitude toward native and host community languages. Through purposive and snow-ball sampling, a total of 176 families were selected for the study, and the questionnaire was used to elicit information from respondents. The result shows that parents who had high proficiency in Efik (Efik major) were more inclined to inter-generational transmission of Efik than parents with less proficiency in Efik (Efik minor). However, exogamous marriages played a significant role in the linguistic experience of Efik minor respondents, as ethnic disparities evinced the need for a neutral code (English) among spouses. In the case of attitude, there was symmetry in result as the two groups avowed positive inclination towards their native language and host community language. However, whereas the Efik minor reflected their attitude in practice with reference to Yoruba, the Efik Major did not. And, whereas the Efik Major reflected their attitude towards Efik in practice, the Efik Minor did not. The result provides the need for systematic and sustained effort towards reviving Efik, especially in multilingual spaces where its existence is precarious

Nigeria, a nation brimming with potential, grapples with a complex tapestry of conflicts woven across its vast territory. This analysis delves into the multifaceted web of contention, dissecting the primary zones of discord that impede the nation's progress. From the insurgency fueled by Boko Haram in the North-East to the farmer-herder clashes in the North-Central, resource conflicts in the Niger Delta, and separatist agitations echoing in the South-East, we examine the actors, causes, and impacts of these conflicts. For the purpose of this paper, a qualitative method of data collection has been adopted; materials were derived from secondary sources of data. Recognizing the interconnectedness of these issues and their root causes in poverty, inequality, and governance shortcomings, we advocate for a multi-pronged approach to peacebuilding, encompassing security measures, dialogue, grievance redress, development initiatives, and social cohesion efforts. By understanding the threads binding these conflicts, we can begin to untangle the tapestry and pave the way for a more peaceful and prosperous Nigeria

BAD GOVERNANCE AS THE BANE OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

    Get PDF
The declining capacity of political leadership in Nigeria to recognize systemic risks such as election fraud, terrorist attacks, herder-farmer conflict, armed banditry, and police brutality and put in place the necessary measures to navigate these challenges is a manifestation of governance failure. As a result of this governance failure, socio-economic development in Nigeria has continued to lack remedy. In contrast with the current system in which leadership is attained through bribery, intimidation, and violence, Nigeria needs an epistocratic system of governance that is founded on the pedigree of its political leaders and the education of its voters. It is against the foregoing that this paper beams its searchlight on bad governance and its effects on Nigeria’s socio-economic development. Through the use of secondary sources of data, it argues that understanding the influence of government on Nigeria's socio-economic development would offer a meaningful insight into the gap between the enormous national resources that exist and Nigeria's desire for progress. Theoretically, it adopts Structural Functionalism as its theoretical framework to analyse the incidence of bad governance as the bane of socio-economic development in Nigeria. The paper concludes that bad governance breeds high rate of indiscipline in the society, giving rise to a state of “might is right”, a state of anomie where normlessness holds sway in the society; where public officials connive with contractors to inflate the value of government contracts, while the cost of governance and administration shoot up, with very little to show in terms of projects and programmes, which impact on the average citizen’s wellbeing. It recommends among others that anyone aspiring to lead the nation in whatever capacity must demonstrate the intellectual pedigree to translate knowledge into effective, transparent, and accountable governance with the potential to enhance socio-economic development
