Since Nigeria gained independence, there has been a persistent demand for an electoral system that would foster a functional democratic process. Despite numerous reform efforts, the outcome appears to deteriorate with each successive general election. This study employs content analysis, drawing on the conflict theory proposed by Karl Marx. It examines the influence of ethnic politics on Nigeria's pursuit of a sustainable democracy. The findings reveal various symptoms and ramifications of ethnic politics that hinder the consolidation of democracy, including heightened calls for self-determination, escalating insecurity, and stalled development. However, the paper advocates for a two-party system to mitigate regional dominance in power structures, emphasizes strict adherence to federal principles, and proposes restructuring as crucial measures to address the challenges posed by ethnic politics in Nigeria. The contribution to the literature lies in the nuanced exploration of the interplay between ethnic politics and democratic consolidation in Nigeria, grounded in the framework of conflict theory. There is also a significant relationship between employment status and encountering the challenge of paying for medical treatment due to cost of healthcare (p< 0.01). Furthermore, women in spite of their locality indulge in self-medication (p<0.00), patronize patent medicine dealers (p< 0.00) and roadside herbal medicine dealers (p< 0.00). The study concludes thatthe reliance on out-of-pocket payments for healthcare services, particularly among uninsured women in Enugu State, Nigeria, has significant implications for their health status. This practice introduces financial barriers that may result in delayed or forgone care, leading to self-medication, utilization of informal healthcare providers, and ultimately, adverse health outcomes. Moreover, the regressive nature of these expenditures exacerbates disparities, disproportionately affecting women, female-headed households, and the poor. To address these challenges, policymakers are urged to consider universal health insurance coverage and reforms in the healthcare sector to alleviate financial burdens and promote healthcare equity

THE INFLUENCE OF CULTURE AND RELIGION ON GENDER INEQUALITY AND IT IMPLICATIONS ON WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
Gender is intrinsically linked to culture that is why culture has continued to be one of the major determinants of gender Inequality. Gender defines the norms and values regarding masculine and feminine roles and behaviour, which is a major threshold of gender inequality. Gender is not dependent on biological sex and sexual orientation, although it only has an unstable relationship with biological sex because it can influence how individual view and participate in gender roles. Culture has always been the main determinant in both domestic and communal activities. Religion focuses on patriarchy and androcentrism. Religion acts as an oppressive deceptive mechanism used by the patriarchal society to exploit women based on defined gender roles and not by biological differences. This paper sets out to differentiate gender and sex as two different entities, focusing on how gender is heavily influenced by cultural and religious expectations and not by biological differences, which in turn creates gender roles and these gender roles further energizes gender inequality. In the light of the above assertions, possible recommendations to eliminate or drastically reduce gender inequality were suggested
