EFFECT OF FRINGE BENEFITS ON EMPLOYEE COMMITMENT IN ORACLE BUSINESS LIMITED, MAKURDI, BENUE STATE, NIGERIA
The study examined the effect of fringe benefits on employee commitment in Oracle Business Limited, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. Specifically, the paper determined the effect of welfare schemes on employee commitment in Oracle Business Limited, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria, and assessed the effect of training on employee commitment in Oracle Business Limited, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. The population of the study comprised of four hundred and filthy-three 453 staff of Oracle Business Limited, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. Used a representative sample using Burley (1964) population allocation formula (Kumar, 1976) of 213. The study's findings have shown that welfare scheme and training are reliable and significant indicators of employee commitment in Oracle Business Limited, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. The study concludes that fringe benefits have significant effect on employee commitment in Oracle Business Limited, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. The study recommended among others the management of Oracle Business Limited Makurdi, Benue State should uphold and continue to promote fringe benefits policies and practices in its operations given the importance and benefits that fringe benefits provide to the organization. Management should also ensure that employees who dedicate individual resources to achieve set objectives are rewarded
AN ASSESSMENT OF PERCEPTION OF THE PEOPLE ON MALARIA PREVENTION AND CONTROL IN DONGA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF TARABA STATE
The study examined household’s knowledge, attitude and practice on Malaria prevention and control in Donga L.G.A of Taraba State. A total of 120 respondents representing 120 households were used for the study. Primary data were generated through administration of structured questionnaire. The types of data used are demographic data, socio-economic, cultural beliefs, political affiliations and prevalent records of malaria in the area. Data analysis was done using tables, percentages, and charts. Chi Square was used for the analysis via micro excels. Findings show that respondents have good knowledge about malaria in the study area. (60%) are men (40%) are female representing households during the research. Households’ knowledge, attitudes and practice on malaria prevention and control were found to vary from household to household based on the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondent. However, (33.33%) were age 15-24 years, (35.83%) were age 25-34 years, (17.5%) were age 35-44 years, (12.5%) were 45-54 years and (0.83%) were 55 above. Generally, (78.33%) believed that mosquitoes can transmit malaria to human while (67.5%) of the respondents’ household have mosquitoe nets, also (56.67%) opined that mosquitoes net are often used by the respondents. The study identified other protective practices against mosquito’s bites and further assessed whether such practices do affect insecticide treated net (ITN) usage. The study recommends that in a bit to improve malaria control measures, community members need to be educated on the relationship between mosquitoes and malaria, and the benefits of accepting cost effective preventive measures including early seeking of treatment from the health facilities or health personnel. There is a need for health education programs that will measure the success of the health education message passed to the community and evaluation of the health education provided to assess the impact of the message among the community members
THE MILITARY IN GOVERNANCE IN THE GAMBIA AND THE QUEST FOR A POLITICAL LEGACY (FROM THE 27TH OF OCTOBER 1980 TO 30TH OF JULY 1981, AND 22ND OF JULY 1994 TO 19TH JANUARY 2017)
This research examines Military Coup D’etats and its legacies in The Gambia. The Gambia experienced two military coups under the leaderships of Kukoi Samba Sanyang and Yahya A.J.J Jammeh, which had landmarks achievements in the country’s polity and trajectory of development. The first military Coup took place on31 July 1981, while the second military coup was on 22nd July 1994. For the first military coup in 1981 under Kukoi Samba Sanyang, it led to the formation of the Senegambia Confederation and the establishment of the Gambia National Army (GNA). In the same vein, the Yahya Jammeh’s military coup of 1994 was a turning point in the sociopolitical and economic development history of The Gambia, as it brought a total transformation of the socio-political and economic system of the country, such as the establishment of key infrastructures ranging from; education, health, agriculture, roads, telecommunications and new government institutions that strengthened the process of governance in the country. On the other hand, Yahya Jammeh’s military government has been very controversial sometimes and had left many questions unanswered regarding the military’s understanding and approach to some of the key principles of democracy as a governance system such as respect for and application of human rights and fundamental freedoms, respect for the rule of law, separation of powers and judicial independence.Using both primary and mainly secondary sources, the author assessed the two military coups in The Gambia and its lasting legacies and sustainable impacts in the country. It used content analysis to arrive at the findings and conclusion. This research finds out that despite the hue and cry about military coups and governance in The Gambia, there have been breakthrough achievements in the country. The research concludes that, viewing critically the two military coups in The Gambia under the microscope of economics of development and their numerous fallouts in the country, the two coups had left permanent imprints in the sands of time in the political landscape and the sustainable development of the country
AN EXAMINATION OF THE IMPACT OF NATIONAL DEFENCE STRATEGY ON THE WAR AGAINST INSURGENCY IN NIGERIA. A STUDY OF IGABI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN KADUNA STATE. 2016– 2023
The growing challenges in Nigeria’s National Security hasbecome a major threat to the overall well-being of everyone living in Nigeria, neighbouring countries and her sovereignty in general. This challenge is closely tied to the lapses inherent in national defence policies and inadequate implementation. The expanded and worrisome attacks by armed insurgent groups within Nigeria cannot be unconnected to uncoordinated national intelligence sharing by authorised agencies, lack of sophistication in security infrastructure, shortage in manpower, advanced information and technological backwardness. This research examines the impact of Nigeria’s national defence policy on anti-insurgency war in Kaduna State and Igabi Local Government Area (LGA) in particular between 2016 and 2023. The research adopted the quantitative analysis and secondary data capture. The research identified that some of the main reasons for the escalated activities of the armed insurgency group is tied to prolonged economic backwardness of most Nigerians, political instability, ethno religious conflict, impunity, and unemployment. The Clausewitz theory of applied strategy has been adopted for this research. In its findings, the Nigeria national defence policy is a much needed strategy that will further pull the victory in the war on insurgency much closer if adequately implemented. The study recommends the need for professionalization and mobilization of all national security apparatuses as key to her sovereignty
CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND EMPLOYEE RETENTION IN THE BENUE STATE CIVIL SERVICE
The paper examined the effect of career development on employee retention in the Benue State Civil Service. This study adopted survey research design, the sample size for the study was 200 across the Benue State Civil Service. Data were collected using a self-mixed questionnaire with response rate of 200 percent. Thepaper has a total population of fourteen thousand nine hundred and sixty-six (14,966) (Benue State civil service commission worker’s register, 2023). The analysis of data was done using simple frequency distribution and percentages. The multiple regression analysis t-test was used alongside with Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) technique in estimation. The Findings revealed that that effect self-certification has significant relationship on employee retention of Benue State civil service and seminars has significant relationship on employee retention of Benue State civil service. The study revealed that career development affected the employee retention of Benue State civil servants. The study concludes that certification, seminars, internship and coaching positively affected the employee retention in the Benue State Civil Service. This implies that investing in certification, seminars, internship, and coaching programs can effectively enhance employee retention within the Benue State Civil Service. The study recommended among others that Policy makers of various ministries should expand the availability of certification programs relevant to the roles and responsibilities within the Civil Service. And clearly communicate the career advancement opportunities associated with obtaining specific certifications, emphasizing their importance in professional development and progression within the Civil Service. This can be done by partnering with accredited institutions or professional organizations to offer a diverse range of certifications
YOUTH PARTICIPATION AND ELECTORAL DEMOCRACY IN KOGI STATE; ISSUES AND PROSPECTS
The paper clarifies how youth political engagement in electoral democracy is understood and the activities that constitute challenges for successful democratic process in Kogi State. The paper further explains youth participation in electoral democracy and they desire for equal representation and good governance. These desire were punctuated by money politics, electoral financing and electoral violence. The electoral series held between 2015 and 2023, revealed political violence and outrageous elections expense at all tiers of electoral contest, which infiltrate to produce declared winner without integrity. It is proof that cost of registration and administration of campaigning hinder youth participation in politic. Sadly, previous empirical studies failed to indicate the derogatory implication of money politics and how has electoral expenditures overtaken the place of merit. This situation further introduces youth as instrument of destruction that crept Nigeria political event. The paper explained how this perception affects electoral integrity in Kogi State. This paper examines youth participation in electoral democracy, and how electoral expenditure has hindered youth participation in electoral democracy, a signals to poor political culture. The paper adopted descriptive methods. This approach relies on both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources rely on copies of questionnaire. Secondary sources rely on textbook, journal, conference proceeding and Nigeria daily. The study adopted Marxist theory of Democracy. The finding indicates huge electoral expenditures, political inequality and compromised political space overtaken the place merit, which restrict youths from electoral contest. The paper recommends youth sensitization on political culture, with the view to exposing the risk associated with money politics and electoral violence in Nigeria
BOREDOM AND DEMOGRAPHICS AS PREDICTORS OF INTERNET ADDICTION AMONG POLYTECHNIC LIBRARY USERS IN SOUTH-SOUTH, NIGERIA
This study examined boredom and demographics as predictors of internet addiction among polytechnic library users in South-South, Nigeria. The study adopted the correlational research design. The population for the study was 3,302 library users from which a sample size of 412 library users in five federal polytechnics using the multi-stage sampling technique was selected. The instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire. The study found that the extent of boredom among polytechnic library users in South-South, Nigeria is great (3.56 > 3.00). It also emerged that there is strong relationship between boredom and Internet addiction among polytechnic library users in South-South Nigeria (r = 0.446, 0.000 < 0.05). Demographics (r = -.035, 0.484, < 0.05) have weak relationship and do not significantly predict internet addiction among the federal polytechnic library users. From the findings of the study, it was concluded that boredom apart from demographics of library users predict internet addiction among library users in federal polytechnics in South-South, Nigeria. Based on the findings from the study, it was recommended that polytechnic management and library administrators in collaboration with the guidance and counselling unit should organise an awareness campaign for students on the consequences of internet addiction and develop initiatives and policies that promote a healthier internet use among student populations
INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS (IDPs) IN NIGERIA: THE ROLES OF INTERNATIONAL ACTORS
The paper examines the global responsibility to protect internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria. It utilizes case studies, reports, and official documents to assess the current response to internal displacement in Nigeria and identify its challenges and shortcomings. The paper argues that the needs of IDPs in Nigeria have not been adequately addressed due to factors such as a lack of political will, limited resources, and structural barriers stemming from government corruption and conflict dynamics. Additionally, the study analyzes the roles and responsibilities of international actors, including the United Nations and international NGOs, in providing assistance to IDPs. It asserts that although these actors have made some progress in addressing the issues faced by IDPs in Nigeria. However, more effort is required to ensure the protection of their rights and reintegration into their communities. In conclusion, the paper calls for a more coordinated and comprehensive approach to the protection of IDPs in Nigeria, as well as the fulfillment of international obligations to assist them in achieving sustainable solutions
GENDER INEQUALITY AND WOMEN REPRESENTATION IN EXECUTIVE AND LEGISLATIVE SEATS IN NIGERIA’S FOURTH REPUBLIC: A STUDY OF LAGOS STATE (2012-2023)
Women make slightly more than half of Lagos state population and play a crucial role in advancing the country’s political system and democratization. However, several studies such as Onyebuchi (2022) and Atajiri (2022) have examined the political representation and the level of involvement of women in politics in Nigeria, however, they did not sufficiently define the forms and effects of gender inequality and the inadequacy inherent in women’s representation in Lagos state and implications of this on democratic values and processes in Nigeria. The research aimed at taking a new perspective at examining the phenomena and filing the gap in literature by providing a detailed analysis on the cause and effects of gender inequality and women political representation. The study adopts the liberal feminism theory as its theoretical framework. The study employs qualitative research design in which primary data were collected using interview. Findings shows that the low representation of women in politics in Lagos state and Nigeria is linked with barriers and obstacles like Religion, education, financing, patriarchy, political violence, bullying, perception from other women. This study recommended establishment of mentorship groups, increment of women’s political education and empowerment, improve access to financial resources, introduction, and enforcement of affirmative actions as well as the encouragement of political parties to nominate women candidates for key positions
ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP CONFLICTS AND CAUSES IN NIGERIA’S HEALTH SYSTEM
Identification of the existence of conflicts, and evaluation of stakeholders’ opinions on the possible causative elements, are the main thrusts of this study. Survey research design was adopted on the informed populations of medical doctors, medical laboratory scientists, nurses, optometrists, pharmacists, physiotherapists and radiographers, practising in the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Nigeria, using a stratified sample size of 1642. Primary data were opinions directly obtained from the respondents. Secondary data were from textbooks, journals and gazetted government documents. This study established that conflicts exist over Nigeria’s health system leadership, with the major causes being:non-respect of lawful professional boundaries, arrogance among professionals, unacceptability of foisted leaderships, and ambiguities in Government regulatory guidelines and Minor causes are: inferiority complex among certain professionals, inter-professional congestions in pursuing compatible goal of patients’ well-being, incompatibility of goals when professional interests are prioritised, scarcities of resources and positions. It is recommended that the respective curricular of health professions’ training schools, should be reviewed to inculcate discipline, conviviality and team-spirit in the out-going graduates. The continuing professional development programmes for practising professionals should be expanded to have inter-professional cross-fertilization of ideas, for better tolerance among health professionals
