MAKING VOTESCOUNT IN ELECTION TECHNOLOGY ERA: A PROPOSED FRAMEWORK FOR NIGERIA’S FUTURE ELECTIONS TO ENHANCE GLOBAL STANDING
The electoral process, been a recurrent political ceremony, holds central significance within any democratic framework; however, the realization of honest vote counting during elections has presented persistent challenges within the context of Nigeria.Readings from extant literature stronglyrevealed there is consensus forutilization of technologies forvoters’accreditation, voting and results transmission with electoral institutions handling results collation and declaration but this has continue to cast doubt on theintegrity of the electoral processand have undermined the significance of votes as the political environment experienced in the Nigeria's 2023 elections showed that the issue of credibility remain unresolved,underliningthe gap between expectation and election outcome. This paper examines the 2023 election procedures cum the nature of the political climate experienced and frames an Automated Election Management System (AEMS) model credible for promoting conducive politico-climate tooptimise the significance of votes. The qualitative technique was adopted. This paper argues that except the entire election process in Nigeria is automated, votes would still not count in future elections. The fate of democracy, the country’s global standing will remain in doubt and her foreign policy will continually glitch.This paper is significant as it contributes to existing literature on the imperative of automated election processin promoting democratic principles.It equally serves as policy guide for domestic, regional and international interventions on election matters
NIGERIAN AIRFORCE STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT AND CAPACITY IN THE FOURTH REPUBLIC, 2019-2023
This study examines the strategic development and capacity of Nigerian Airforce (NAF) in the Fourth Republic, with particular focus from 2015 to 2023. In recent years, the nation has had to contend with threats from armed banditry, kidnapping, separatist armed organizations, and other forms of criminality in addition to terrorism in the Northeast. This situation has preoccupied the national security forces, including the Airforce which has carried out several operations to address these threats. Whereas extant literature on the Nigerian Airforce has documented the history and assessed the challenges of the force, this paper contributes to the literature by examining the trajectory of the force, in terms of strategic development and capacity, during President Buhari’s administration (2015-2023) which was characterized by humongous spending on the security sector amid alarming insecurity. The paper adopted the documentary design. Data was collected from secondary sources and analyzed using the descriptive method. Findings showed that there had been monumental progress during the period under study as government effectively supported the NAF by acquiring more platforms and supervising innovation and advancement in virtually every area of the service. A strategic approach to acquisition and reactivation had allowed the NAF to accrue a substantial number of aircraft and platforms in multiple fleets, quite unmatched in previous years
HUMAN RESOURCE ACCOUNTING AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF QUOTED DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS
The paper examined the effect of human resource accounting) and on the financial performance of Deposit Money Banks (DMBs)in Nigeria. Other objectives of the study were to determine the influence of HRA on capital employed and to appraise the influence of HRA on return on capital employed. Secondary source of data was adopted for this study and ten quoted deposit money banks were selected through random sampling technique while the data were analyzed using regression analytical method. It was found out that salaries and wages, training, health and safety had significant positive influence on capital employed of deposit money banks in Nigeria and salaries and wages, training, health and safety had significant positive influence on return on capital employed. This study therefore concluded that human resource accounting improved financial performance of deposit money banks. The study suggested for the management of deposit money banks to improve the general welfare of their employees through improved salaries and wages, better training and enhanced health and safety in order to improve their financial performance
EDUCATIONAL LEVEL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH OF RURAL WOMEN IN NOTHERN CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA
This study investigated educational level and reproductive health of rural women in Northern Cross River State, Nigeria. It explored how educational level influence reproductive health outcomes. The study identified key challenges faced by rural women to include limited educational opportunities, inadequate family planning services, unsafe abortions, untreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs), poor prenatal and postnatal care, and barriers to cervical cancer screening. These challenges are compounded by economic instability, poor healthcare infrastructure, educational gaps, religious barriers, and traditional norms related to early childbearing. Utilizing a cross-sectional research design, the study targeted women of reproductive age (18-54 years) across the five Local Government Areas in the northern Cross River State. A sample size of 400 respondents were used. Quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment correlation Coefficient. Qualitative insights were gained through Key Informant Interviews (KIl) with healthcare professionals, community leaders, and local stakeholders, and were analyzed thematically. The study was theoretically guided by the Health Belief Model, to understand how educational level influence reproductive health decisions. Findings revealed significant relationships between education level with reproductive health outcomes. Higher educational attainment is associated with improved reproductive health, while living in rural areas. Based on the findings, the study recommends targeted interventions, including expanded educational opportunities, improved healthcare infrastructure, economic empowerment initiatives, community-based programmes promoting delayed marriage, family planning, and Social Workers advocacy for policies that can address these challenges, ensuring that interventions are tailored to the unique needs of rural women
ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE FOOD SECURITY IN EBONYI STATE THROUGH URBAN AGRICULTURE
This study investigated achieving sustainable food security in Ebonyi State through urban agriculture. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 300 urban farmers across the state, comprising of 150 males and 150females and this population formed the sample size for the study. Some concepts were clarified. A 3 in-1 instrument titled sustainable food security through urban agriculture (SFSTUAQ) was used for data collection. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. The research questions were answered using mean rating t-test. The findings of the study revealed that there was a high level of awareness and participation among urban farmers due to encouragement from government. It was therefore recommended that co-opting urban farmers into co-operative societies will help immensely in reducing urban poverty
HUMAN SECURITY AND LAND BORDERS CLOSURE: A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
The paper examined how concerned of national interest and human security led to Nigeria land border closure in 2019.The paper employs the historical method to reviewed and analysed Data. The work adopted the liberal theoretical framework which justified trade liberalization and free movement of people and goods from one place to another as a gateway for modernization and economic development. The paper argued that, the best decision taken by Nigeria federal government was the closure of her land border which stimulate economic growth and enhanced human security. The major findings of the paper revealed that smuggling activities in Nigeria is due to porous nature of Nigeria land borders, consequently insecurity and inflation have been on the increase with serious security implications on the citizens wellbeing and security. The paper also revealed that what influenced government closure of the borders was due to proliferation of light and heavy weapons across the Nigeria borders hence the executive order for border closure in 2019.The paper concludes that despite federal government acclaimed success of border closure of the nation land borders the closure did not yield the desire results
TEACHING METHODS IN SOME SELECT SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN YOLA: A BEHAVIORIST OR MENTALIST APPROACH?
This study investigates the dominant teaching approach employed in some select secondary schools in Yola, Adamawa State. In geographical context, previous studies have predominantly concentrated on southern Nigerian states, leaving a significant gap in research concerning northern regions like Adamawa. This study addresses this geographical oversight by focusing specifically on Yola, thereby contributing new insights into the educational practices in a less-studied area. Based on the framework of teaching methodologies, a questionnaire-based survey was administered to sample 50 teachers from four randomly selected secondary schools, two each from Yola North and South Local Government Areas of Adamawa State. The findings reveal that a majority of teachers (58%) utilize a combination of both behaviorist and mentalist approaches, while 42% rely primarily on the behaviorist approach, characterized by teacher-centered instruction and reinforcement strategies. No teachers identified as using purely mentalist methods. The results also show that teachers' choices are influenced by practical classroom management concerns, fostering critical thinking, and addressing students' individual learning needs. The study highlights the importance of teacher training, with 92% of respondents considering it crucial for informing their teaching practices
ENRICHING CLASSROOMS WITH TECHNOLOGY: EFFECTIVENESS OF ICT INTEGRATION IN TEACHING AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BENUE STATE
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have become part of individual lives in the 21st century. ICT is often employed to improve the quality of instructional delivery to help in equipping the students with relevant skills and knowledge. This paper stressed on the integration of ICT tools in teaching Agricultural Science in Senior Secondary Schools in Benue State. The paper dealt with the impact of ICT tools in teaching Agricultural Science. Examined the usage level of ICT tools by learners, determined the effect of ICT integration on student’s attitude/interest and challenges of integrating ICT in Agricultural Science classes. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study with the population of 6250 and a sample size of 120 respondents. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire validated by three experts; data was collected by the researcher and analyzed using mean and standard deviation while chi square was used to test the null hypotheses at .05 level of confidence. Findings revealed amongst others that ICT devises if used in Agricultural Science instruction in teaching learning process, will boost learner’s performances, makes learning more interesting and enhances student’s retention abilities. Teachers attest that, teacher’s incompetency of ICT use, lack of teachers’ self-confidence, traditional appraisal of ICT and lack of ICT mainstreaming into schools’ policy were some of the constraints faced. Therefore, for effective integration of ICT in teaching Agricultural Science in secondary schools, it was recommended that teachers of Agricultural Science should be trained periodically; sufficient ICT facilities should be provided; there should be constant power supply; internet services should be enhanced, among others
THE TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND MANAGEMENT OF COMMUNAL CRISIS IN AKOKO NORTH-EAST, ONDO STATE, NIGERIA
The study examined the efficacy of using the traditional institutions in managing communal crisis in Akoko North-East, Ondo State, Nigeria. Descriptive research design was adopted, both questionnaire and interview were used to obtain firsthand information. Communitarian theory was employed as a theoretical framework. It was discovered that land, chieftaincy disputes, religion and politicisation are factors causing communal crisis in Akoko North East, Ondo state. The negative effects of the conflict include economic disruption, human displacement and social divisions. Also, it was found that traditional institutions have authority over the affairs of the study area. It also discovered that the existence of two first-class kings, political manipulations, erosion of authority and lack of application of the ancient sacred rite in rural life have been the clog in effective managing of communal crisis in Akoko North-East, Ondo State. It recommended that existence of two first-class kings in same locality should be resolved, political interference should be curbed and traditional institutions should fall back to their ancient sacred rites to ensure their efficacy in managing communal conflicts
A HISTORICAL DISCOURSE ON TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND CULTURAL PRACTICES OF THE KALAOKO PEOPLE
This study explores the history of traditional institutions and cultural practices in Kala Oko, a community in the Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. The Study adopted historical and descriptive research methods and obtained data from primary and secondary sources. As a qualitative research, analysis was done thematically. Data collection involved interviews and field visits, capturing firsthand accounts from community members. The study findings reveal the resilience of Kala Oko's traditional institutions and their significant role in fostering cultural heritage and social cohesion. Despite challenges such as limited funding, high transportation costs, and time constraints, the research highlights strategies for preserving and revitalizing these institutions in the face of modern pressures. This work contributes to academic scholarship and community efforts to maintain Kala Oko's unique cultural identity
