It traces the historical roots of cultism and secret societies in Nigeria to the pre-colonial era, with particular focus on their emergence in university settings in 1952. The study aims to identify the underlying factors contributing to cultism and its detrimental impact on community development, advocating for the implementation of youthpreneurship initiatives as a solution. Employing a survey design, the research gathers quantitative data through questionnaires. Its findings indicate that cultism is deeply entrenched in Nigerian society, fueled by factors such as poverty, unemployment, and political instability. The paper recommends the effective implementation of youth development policies, including skills training, mentorship programs, and access to funding, to nurture entrepreneurial spirit among youth and foster innovation

Rape has become a menace across the globe. Nations are utilizing both local and international instruments to combat the epidemic. Despite the existence of numerous legal frameworks and agreements designed to address sexual violence, the prevalence of rape remains alarmingly high in many parts of the world. The hazard is much more worrisome in climes such as Africa, with the high incidences of rape that occur on a daily basis. In Nigeria where national instruments for maintaining law and order appear inefficient following the continues surge of crimes and violence across the nation, there have been recent calls for international interventions. Nigeria is signatory to such international conventions for eradicating violence against women with the hope that such efforts will further boost its effort in combating sexual violence in the country. This article delves into the multifaceted landscape of efforts aimed at curbing the scourge of rape on a global scale, with a particular focus on the impact of international conventions. Utilizing the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women, this study engaged survey design to interrogate the efficacy of international conventions in combating the endemic scourge of rape in Nigeria. The study engaged survey design with the use of questionnaires and interviews to gather data which Data gathered were analysed and triangulated with secondary data. The study revealed that Nigeria being a signatory to the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women is mainly just on paper with international convention having significant impact in a coordinated coalition against rape in the country. The study therefore recommended the strengthening of existing laws on rape in order to act as some deterrence mechanism to would-be offenders

It is an indubitable fact that African countries has been highly susceptible to inter and intra conflicts after independence. This has made Africa to be christened the hub of conflicts and wars. Most pathetic is the fact that these conflicts and wars have defied any meaningful solution, and their negative impact has impeded peace and development in the continent. It has eroded to a larger extent the core value of human existence in the continent. The depended nature of African economy is largely blame for this, knowing fully well that whatever affects he developed nations have a rippling effect on Africa. This paper examines the challenges the internationalization of conflict has posed to peace and development in Africa. The paper argues that most of the violent conflict in the continent has external influence and sponsors. It blames the Cold War rivalry between the capitalist United States and the communist USSR as it were, where attempt by the African allies to delink from either of the ideologies to favour the other, always led to intervention by these powerful nations. The paper submits that while the external factors share in the blame for Africa lack of peace, development and progress, African leaders are largely to blame for the myriads of problems that have bedeviled the continent due to their tantrum for bad leadership

Fewscholarly articles show interest in the study and impact of the dead-on politics and society, especially in Nigeria. This paper is a breakaway from the norm into an unharnessed field of political inquiry, the perceived possible influence of the dead. History shows that the socio-economic standing of an individual shapes the final disposition of his body either in a marked or an unmarked grave. The dead has now overridden ideological significance in domestic and international politics. Some were given recognition and respect even in death by having deserving monuments, as witnessed in Ancient Egypt, for example, while others died with their history completely erased and buried with them in an unknown or unmarked place for fear of influencing the living. Thisessay discusses the strategies adopted in disposing the dead body ofMuhammad Yusuf, the leader of Boko Haramin an unmarked and unknown graveyard outside Maiduguri, Borno State and its political implication. This research uses the public safety theory to explain the denial of a burial ground to the leader of Boko haram, Muhammad Yusuf

    Get PDF
The study provides insights into how flooding exacerbates health issues and the direct and indirect effects on physical and food security in northern Nigeria through the increased prevalence of waterborne diseases such as cholera and malaria, displacement of people, leading to overcrowded and unsanitary living conditions in temporary shelters and the disruption of agricultural activities, resulting in food shortages and increased prices, undermining food security in the region. Relying on secondary sources of data collection and utilising content analysis, the study investigates the impact of flooding on health, physical and food security in Northern Nigeria, Using the Human Security Theory (HST)   developed by Mahbub ul Haq and Amartya Sen in 1994 to emphasise the protection of individuals and communities from various threats, including environmental disasters like flooding. Findings revealed that flooding causes outbreaks of infectious diseases, inadequate sanitation, and making people vulnerable to infection, affecting mental, social, and physical health. It also causes internal displacement, homelessness, economic hardship, psychological violence, and flooding affects agricultural productivity, destroying crops and farmland, which threatens food security. This study recommended that the Nigerian government overhaul emergency response services to ensure hygienic conditions, that people have access to clean water and sanitation, and that infectious diseases are prevented after flooding. Immediate assistance should be provided to displaced persons, including food, shelter, and healthcare, as well as to relocate affected communities to construct and maintain effective drainage systems to prevent flooding and engage local communities in flood risk management and adaptation measures. Land use planning and enforcement should be improved to mitigate flood risks. It should establish reliable early warning systems to alert communities of potential floods, promote water conservation and efficient irrigation practices, and encourage crop cultivation on soils with high water-holding capacity
