Right-libertarianism and universal basic income: reasons for skepticism
The purpose of this article is twofold – on the one hand, it offers an overview of the main theoretical orientations of libertarianism, with a focus on right-libertarianism, and its potential support for a universal basic income guarantee; on the other hand, it looks at what seems the most developed case in the right-libertarian camp for such a scheme. Although sympathetic to Zwolinski’s arguments, I contend that a neo-Lockean framework cannot conduce to a basic income institutional arrangement without an interpretation of the Lockean proviso in a left-libertarian manner and the most promising strategy for a right-libertarian argument would be one carried in other frameworks
The UBI through a feminist looking-glass: can HE spot a Wollstonecraft dilemma?
As the growing debate around the policy and the theoretical implications of the Universal Basic Income prompts further discussions, one must acknowledge the issues this proposal has to face from anterior debates. In this case, the debate concerning the issue of the „Wollstonecraft dilemma” carries a lot of importance relative to the UBI. If the accomplishment of equality on the labour market and the maintenance of the difference between men and women is contradictory, the UBI can be said to have no chance of convincing feminists of its worth. I shall argue that the UBI, if the Wollstonecraft dilemma is conceived as a mostly misleading problem, can succeed in attracting the sympathy of feminists. I will begin by presenting the basic components of the UBI, some of its policy-oriented traits and then proceed to inventory the main arguments for and against the UBI from the feminist side. I will then summarily present Fraser’s „universal care giver” model, through which I will show that an appropriate amount of consideration can reconcile different and apparently contradictory contentions. Then, I will be considering the perceived inconsistencies between two systems as opposed as the care ethics and liberal feminism, only to conclude that they represent two sides of the same issue and that the UBI can be, due to its commitments, responsive to both
European Union in the Global Growth Prospects
The aim of the study is to evaluate the EU economic position in 1995-2013 as well as a perspective growth potential in the global dimension up to 2025. The subject of the research are real and projected data including: GDP growth rate, main growth factors (labour, labour productivity and Total Factor Productivity), and their input to the GDP growth. The analysis was conducted for the years 1995- 2013 and 2014-2025. The authors’ basic conclusions are: 1) the technological and economic gap between the European Union and the United States has been deepening, 2) the increasing polarisation of world economic powers and low GDP growth in the European Union limit its chances of maintaining the position of the second centre in the world economy, 3) economic growth forecasts indicate a deepening of the economic gap between the largest EU countries and the US
The effects of Foreign Direct Investments on structuring the Varieties of Capitalism in the post-communist states
I investigate some of the most important theoretical approaches to some of the most important economic factor that shaped the economic transformation in the post-communist states, namely the Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). I investigate how, depending on the theoretical framework we employ, the multiple structural effects FDI had on the economies of the transition economies, as well as other parts of the social and political life can be causally interpreted
In this essay i will present the theory of dreams interpretation by Sigmund Freud and the Slavoj Zizek?s theory of the perception of the ideology. Both of them have the same pattern of analysis. In other words, Freudian theory inspired Zizekian theory. My hypothesis is that neither S. Freud nor S. Zizek in their theories respect the classic economics theory, but they keep to the satisficing principle, the main characteristic of H. Simon's bounded rationality. The principles of the classic economics theory are not respected by their theories because they do not regard the utility maximization principle. The value of this essay is represented by the possible answer that this article should give to that kind of persons that think about Zizek?s and Freud?s theories are irrational. My answer is that both of them are partial-irrational, but are more rational than irrational
The Rent Seeking Society Revisited: An extensive overview
This article aims to serve as an introduction to the main theoretical framework concerning the economic and political phenomena of rent-seeking, which entails a dynamic ensemble of market entities that wish to alter its configuration by institutional means such as lobbying or import tariffs. The main contribution of this theoretical approach is that it has resurged the research interests of economists regarding the true social costs of this type of activity, which, prior to Tullock’s (1967) insights, have been widely considered as uncontrollable side effects of market failures and externalities, while simultaneously diminishing the role government plays in this complex institutional exchange
Morgenthau, Waltz, Wendt
The present paper intends to identify some perspectives on theoretical validation and application of scientific methods in two major currents: realism (in two of his hypostases: classical realism theorized by Hans Morghentau, neorealism as developed by Kenneth Waltz) and Alexander Wendt’s constructivism. This analysis uses the concept of “cumulative knowledge”, a type of that explanation that relates to the results of another explanation that it re-evaluates. From this point of view, I argue that the three authors, even in the case of the concepts (state, international system and change of international system) that they define in a different ways, transfer meanings from one to another
Mainstreaming the Far Right: Cultural Politics in Hungary
In the following I will discuss the influence of the far Right on the formation of symbolic politics of the Fidesz government in Hungary. This phenomenon will be interpreted in the context of the Hungarian political regime as a whole
