    Get PDF
This article is about the voluntary or involuntary contribution of the Roma through the histoy to the economical and social development in the Romanian space. Over the centuries, Roma have suffered social exclusion, discrimination, slavery and deportations to Nazi and Romanian concentration camps. What is less documented is that they have managed to survive over the centuries as an ethnic group, even becoming privileged in certain fields. The Roma attained a high level of knowlege as handicraftsmen in an agrarian cultural space, as army tools providers, as famous musicians and appreciated entertainers; they gained recognition as of being from a different culture and speaking another language. Therefore, this article is part of a series of analyses ol Roma contribution to economic and social development of the societies that they live in, focusing on Romania - home of the largest population of Roma in Europe. I have decided to start with Roma siavery for two reasons: first of all, Roma were first mentioned in Romanian history as slaves and second, the rote and economic contribution of the slaves in the Romanian Principalities are highly relevant for the current situation of the Romanian Roma. This article makes use of the avaitabte literature on slavery of Roma ethnic groups in the Romanian Principalities as well as other materials related to Roma history, including anthropological and sociological research

Social exclusion and poverty have affected the lives of Roma for decades. Nowadays this continues in Romania and in many other countries in Europe. In Romania, a large obstacle for social inclusion of the Roma has been the lack of education, which has further led to a high degree af unemployment among the community. Additionally, many Roma have reached a high level of poverty, resulting in an income disparity, which in turn has contributed to social exclusion. This article aims at analyzing the causes of povety (in the case of Roma people) as well as the public policies that have been implemented until now in this respect

in this paper we investigate the features of the unanimous decision as a form of social aggregation in the traditional Romanian society, and, especially, in the rural communities of the Vrancea region. The main objectives of this research are: to present the unanimous decisions from a rigorous theoretical approach. To describe the historical, social and economic conditions of the traditional Vrancea communities, on basis of some of the main researches in the Romanian sociology, and to discover the degree to which the unanimous voting is present and used in the communities, in the conditions of common property. In the first part of the paper, we offer a theoretic perspective on the unanimous choice, in the second part of the study, we present the main characteristics of the traditional Romanian society, starting with the basis of tradition as one of its fundamental institutions. Does Voter Distribution Matter in the Directional Model? A Refutation of the Original Claims

    Get PDF
In this paper I demonstrate that the distribution of votes influences the theoretical predictions formulated through the instrumentality of the directional model of spatial analysis, thereby refuting the claims made by Macdonald, Listhaug and Rabinowitz (1991) who argue that the distribution of voters is only relevant for proximity-based models. Further, l show that the boundary of the region of responsibility is not always the ideologically dominant position, as Rabinowitz and Macdonald (1989) originally assert, this situation appearing only as a special case, determined by the fact that the area encompassed between the graph of the voter distribution function and the X - axis is numerically higher between the boundary of the region of responsibility and the point of origin then between the most extreme point of the ideological dimension and the boundary of the region of responsibility. Finally, I improve the full proportionality theorem by specifying the necessary conditions for each position described in the theorem to become ideologically optimal
