Tourism intensity and plastic waste management insights from European capital cities
The surge in demand for plastic materials, coupled with the rising trend of out-of-home food consumption, has posed significant challenges to urban waste management systems. These challenges are intensified in touristic cities where touch-and-go tourism leads visitors to spend most of the day outside, resulting in a high generation of waste in urban areas. While existing research focuses predominantly on the hospitality sector, the role of public administrations remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by surveying city managers from ten European capitals, providing a comprehensive overview of plastic waste management and prevention patterns. Results reveal that legislative measures and plastic bans are effective, but local initiatives and social programs require further support. Waste generated in public areas is less scrutinized than residential waste, and differences in municipal waste collection schemes hinder proper sorting. Findings underscore the need for collaborative efforts in both waste prevention and management to strengthen partnerships with hotels, restaurants and shopkeepers, as well as the proper design of waste logistics and infrastructure and dedicated communication campaigns in tourist hotspots.PeerReviewe
Friction influence on the Compression-After-Impact test response of thin-walled Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced-Plastics with buckling development
The impact damage to thin-walled Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced-Plastic (CFRP) components remains a critical concern in aircraft structures. Standardised Compression-After-Impact (CAI) test procedures, commonly involving 4 mm thick CFRP plates, are used to study the failure mechanisms of impact-damaged composite structures. However, these procedures do not consider the influence of imperfections and global buckling on thin-walled CFRP structures. This study focuses on the behaviour of 2.13 mm thick CFRP plates under CAI test loading, where global buckling develops, leading to increased loads carried by the knife-edge supports of the device (located at the unloaded plate sides, aligned with the compressive loading). The influence of friction between the knife-edges and the plate is investigated via Finite Element models and compared with experiments, revealing its influence on the buckling shape, failure load, and rupture of the plate. In summary, friction is a physical phenomenon that, contrary to the current state of the art, should be addressed for thin-walled CFRP in CAI testing when global buckling develops.PeerReviewe

Documentation plays a significant role in software development, but challenges regarding its timeliness and consistency often persist. Documentation-Driven Development aims to address these issues but results in additional time demands for developers who must juggle between documentation and code development. At the same time, AI tools like GitHub Copilot are gaining prominence, where prompts are often created in natural language and look less like traditional code. This work explores how documentation can be designed to serve directly as context for AI-assisted code generation tools. The goal is to enable developers to focus more on development while ensuring effective documentation without compromising productivity. To achieve this, a methodology is developed that optimizes documentation for integration with such tools
Digital transformation in patient organizations : interview and focus group study
Background: Patient organizations (POs) are an integral part of the health care landscape, serving as advocates and support systems for patients and their families. As the digitalization of health care accelerates, POs are challenged to adapt their diverse roles to digital formats. However, the extent and form of POs’ digital adaptation and the challenges POs encounter in their digital transformation remain unexplored. Objective: This study aims to investigate the digital transformation processes within POs. We examined the types of digital activities and processes implemented, people involved in respective tasks, challenges encountered, and attitudes toward the digitalization of POs. Methods: The study was carried out by the multicenter interdisciplinary research network Pandora. We adopted a qualitative exploratory approach by conducting 37 semistructured interviews and 2 focus groups with representatives and members of POs in Germany. Results were obtained using a deductive-inductive approach based on a qualitative content analysis. Methods and results were reported in accordance with the COREQ (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research) checklist. Results: POs primarily apply basic digital tools to engage in communication, health education, and information dissemination. Some also develop specific mobile apps and collect health data through patient registries. Volunteers cover a considerable part of the workload. Sometimes, POs collaborate with external partners, such as health professionals or other nonprofit organizations. Furthermore, many (13/46, 28%) interviewees referred to the importance of involving members in digitalization efforts to better meet their needs. However, they described the actual practices used to involve members in, for example, developing digital services as limited, passive, or implicit. When evaluating digital transformation processes, representatives and members of POs expressed generally positive attitudes and acknowledged their potential to improve the accessibility of support services, management efficiency, and outreach. Still, resource constraints; the complexity of digital initiatives; and accessibility issues for certain demographic groups, especially older persons, were frequently mentioned as challenges. Several (15/46, 33%) interviewees highlighted POs’ increasing responsibility to support their members’ digital competencies and digital health literacy. Conclusions: POs are actively involved in the digital transformation of health services. To navigate challenges and further shape and sustain digital activities and processes, POs may benefit from governance frameworks, that is, a clear plan outlining with whom, how, and with what objectives digital projects are being realized. Support from public, scientific, and policy institutions to enhance the process through training, mentorship, and fostering collaborative networks seems warranted.PeerReviewe
Angebotserweiterungen Solidarischer Landwirtschaften in Deutschland am Beispiel von Gemüseerzeugnissen
Hintergrund
Background
In response to the multiple crises of Germany's sustainability-deficient food system, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has emerged as a civil society movement with the potential to transform the food system through its socially responsible and environmentally friendly approach. Considering CSA within its local value chain appears beneficial for its further development. Expanding the range of products increases value creation and promotes local supply structures. Some CSAs produce and offer small quantities of vegetable products through community-supported campaigns. This thesis explores further options for offering vegetable products and reviews existing practical experience.
Methods
For this purpose, three experts from three initiatives were interviewed, each with a different approach to expanding their range, different size and member involvement. The exploratory expert interviews, conducted based on a semi-structured guideline, collected data on contextual experiences and recommendations. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed. The evaluation was based on Kuckartz and Rädiker's content-structuring analysis.
Results
Vegetable processing in the context of CSA is diverse: One farm runs annual sauerkraut production campaigns with its members. A second farm procures various vegetable products through purchases and collaborations with a processing business and service provider. The third initiative acts as an experimental space and has several sales channels. As part of a multi-farm CSA, the manufacture distributes vegetable products to members on a monthly basis.
Discussion and Conclusion
Experience, recommendations, and suitable development options vary between initiatives. The specific type of expansion that makes sense for a CSA depends on its size and the type of member involvement, among other things. This thesis provides an initial overview of the topic. Further research is needed to shed light on the potential of local vegetable processing
This thesis deals with the validation of a mission profile for the Breezer B400-6 ultralight aircraft using aerodynamic coefficients. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the aerodynamic properties and performance data of the ultralight aircraft using classic handbook methods and the open-source-platform SUAVE and to compare them with the manufacturer’s specifications. As part of the BeHyPSy joint project, which is pursuing the development of a hydrogen-based propulsion system, this work serves as a basis for the integration of alternative propulsion concepts. The modelling begins with the determination of the aerodynamic properties of the ultralight aircraft, whereupon the mission profile is developed with the help of physically based calculation methods and comprehensive simulation methods. Drag, lift and performance characteristics are calculated and compared for both approaches - handbook methods and SUAVE. The results of the methods show a high correlation with only minor deviations, which are mainly due to different calculation approaches of the aerodynamic parameters. The knowledge gained validates the existing mission profile and contributes to the optimisation of future modelling approaches. The comparison thus provides an important basis for further investigations in the field of alternative propulsion systems
