Becoming visible with limited resources: Nonprofit journalists’ perspectives on search engine optimization

    Get PDF
This study examines the perspectives of non-profit online magazines regarding their online presence and the role that search engine optimization (SEO) plays in enhancing their visibility. We conducted semi-structured interviews with representatives from seven non-profit online magazines in Germany. Our findings indicate that visibility on the web is crucial for non-profits, even though they are not typically competing directly with commercial organizations. Non-profits seek visibility to achieve societal goals, such as educating their readership about fake news or promoting minority perspectives on political issues. Unlike for-profit organizations, economic factors are not their primary motivation. To reach their full potential audience, SEO is viewed as an important tool that all the surveyed magazines employ. However, due to limited resources, they cannot dedicate substantial effort to SEO and must treat it as a secondary task. The results of this study raise questions about how quality journalism from both for-profit and non-profit sources can reach the public in a balanced manner, as well as the responsibility search engine providers have in this context.Deutsche ForschungsgemeinschaftPeerReviewe

The Role of Parental Emotional Communication in the Socioemotional Development of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Preschoolers

Objectives: Parents’ communication with their children about emotions plays an important role in children’s socioemotional development. In deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children, emotional communication may be complicated by the effects of hearing loss. This study investigated the importance of emotional communication for the socioemotional development of DHH children and their parents’ experience of stress. Methods: We interviewed the parents of 102 DHH preschool children aged 3;0 to 6;11 years in writing about parental emotional communication, parental responsiveness, children’s communicative competence, parental stress, and their children’s socioemotional development. We analyzed the data using path analysis. Results: The results show that emotional communication has no direct effects on parental stress and children’s socioemotional development, although there are some indirect effects. Emotional communication contributes to a lower parental stress level (β = –.06, p = .04) via parental responsiveness and to fewer behavioral problems in the children (β = –.07, p = .04). Emotional communication also contributes to better socioemotional skills of the children via the children’s communicative competence (β = .08, p = .04). Children with additional needs and their families are particularly at risk. Higher parental stress (β = .25, p < .001) and lower socioemotional skills in the children (β = –.18, p = .02) are evident. Conclusions: The results support previous findings in the literature regarding the role of parental responsiveness and communicative competence in the development of DHH children. In the context of family-centered early intervention, in addition to these important skills, parental support in communicating about feelings with their child should also be considered as a development-strengthening factor.PeerReviewe

Participation and co-creation in implementation research

The aim of implementation research is to transfer evidence-based interventions from research into practice. Successful transfer requires acceptance of the interventions by users and implementers. Research processes are increasingly focussing on participatory approaches in which various stakeholders are involved in research and implementation, thereby increasing the acceptability of interventions. Depending on the intervention, participation may draw from users, research, care providers or policy and funding bodies. Citizens and patients play a crucial role in participatory processes. Participatory implementation research is a collaborative approach that combines implementation research with the co-creation of knowledge by systematically involving participants in the research process and beyond. In this way, user-centred, tailor-made, lifeworld-oriented interventions in health promotion and healthcare can be scientifically developed under real-life conditions and permanently transferred into real-world practice. This review article examines the status of participatory implementation research in Germany and outlines the concepts and framework of participatory implementation research. To this end, projects from the fields of patient care, health promotion and the community setting are described. Two examples of the long-term participation of citizens of a neighbourhood in research conducted in the urban district laboratories in Bochum and Hamburg show how continuous participation and co-creation in implementation research for prevention, health promotion and health care can succeed. Heat4Future : a strategic planning tool for decarbonizing district heating systems

    No full text
Strategic planning of future heat supply, particularly in the context of district heating systems, is essential for achieving a viable and cost-efficient energy transition. However, existing planning tools for district heating systems often require detailed data, which is frequently unavailable in the early stages of the planning process. In response to this challenge, this paper presents Heat4Future, a new planning tool designed to provide insights into potential decarbonized district heating systems for a given location using minimal input data. The tool demonstrates the implementation of an innovative methodology for strategic planning of district heating systems. It uses a snapshot simulation model to configure the supply for a particular district heating system, taking into account the annual heat demand and user-specified heat sources. The tool comprises of four modules for calculating the cost-effective generation profile of the system. It is designed to generate detailed hourly profiles over an entire year for key parameters essential to the operation and planning of a DHS using a specified set of renewable energy sources, including heat load, generation, and storage profiles. • Heat4Future provides an overview of the possibilities for a decarbonized district heating supply in a specific location. • The simulation tool contains four modules for calculating the system's generation profile: Weather and Environmental Data Module, Thermal Load Module, Buffer Thermal Energy Storage Module, and Strategic Heat Planning Module. • The tool is licensed under the MIT License and is available as an open-source repository on GitLab.PeerReviewe

Empty promises : some requirements for a successful implementation of decarbonisation strategies in developing countries

    No full text
Decarbonisation strategies are crucial for mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and achieving sustainable development. However, the successful implementation of these strategies in developing countries remains a significant challenge due to resource constraints, competing development priorities, and institutional barriers. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of decarbonisation efforts and impacts through an extensive review of existing research, reports, and case studies. The research includes a detailed examination of decarbonisation initiatives, complemented by case studies from seven industrialised (USA, EU27, Germany, Italy, France, Finland, and Australia) and six developing countries (China, Brazil, South Africa, India, Mexico, and Kenya). These case studies showcase practical efforts and illustrate current trends in decarbonisation. The findings underscore the importance of political will, financial resources, technological capacity, and social acceptance as critical requirements for the successful implementation of decarbonisation strategies in developing countries. The paper emphasises the need for international cooperation, capacity-building, and aligning decarbonisation goals with broader socio-economic objectives to ensure these strategies contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.PeerReviewe

Wasserstoff in der Industrie : zwischen Aufbruch und Blockade ; Energiesystem im Umbruch: Akteur:innen der Transformation im Dialog – Teil 1

    No full text
