This work examined the effect of entrepreneurial resourcefulness on performance of SMEs in Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State. The survey research design was adopted with the target population of 96 owners of SMEs. The sample size of 77 respondents was determined using Taro Yamane formula and Cronbach Alpha to measure the degree of reliability. Data were collected through primary source (questionnaire), designed in five-point Likert rating scale format for the collection of data. Out of the 77 questionnaires administered, the researcher was able to retrieve all 77 copies. Simple Linear regression analysis was adopted for the test of hypotheses. The findings revealed that there is a significant effect of entrepreneurial resourcefulness (sustainability, profitability and expansion) on performance of SMEs. The study concluded that entrepreneurial resourcefulness is a determinant of performance of SMEs. The study recommended amongst other things that government should engage owners of SMEs especially the young start-ups in training programs to enhance entrepreneurs' resourcefulness and strategic decision-making skills. These programs will provide practical insights into leveraging on available resources effectively and fostering a proactive mindset for improving entrepreneurial resilience for small business owner
FORMALIZATION AND PERFORMANCE OF MICRO, SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES IN NIGERIA; THE ROLE OF OPEN MINDEDNESS AND COMMITMENT TO LEARNING
The aim of this study was to examine if formalization can be adopted by MSMEs in Nigeria as a way ensuring better performance and if open mindedness and commitment to learning can both affect MSMEs performance as well as strengthen the relationship between formalization and performance of MSMEs in Nigeria. With a population of 39,654,385 MSMEs in Nigeria, yamene formula was used to obtain a sample size of 400 out of which 368 of the responses were found usable for the study. Hypothesis was tested using SmartPLS version 3.4 and the result indicated that Formalization, open mindedness and commitment to learning significantly affects the performance of MSMEs in Nigeria. However, open mindedness and commitment to learning did not significantly moderate the relationship between formalization and performance of MSMEs. The study concluded that formalization, open mindedness and commitment to learning individually are key to growth and development of MSMEs but open mindedness and commitment to learning will not strengthen formalization since they assume opposite principles. The study recommended that operators of MSMEs should ensure rules and regulations guiding their operations are clearly written and/or established as well as followed
Effect of Information Communication Technology on Credit Administration on Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria
Effective communication between the borrower and bank plays a pivotal role in reducing non-performing loans (NPLs) and ensuring the stability of the banking sector in Nigeria. Studies in this regard in the context of emerging financial system have received little attention particularly the Nigerian financial system. This study scrutinizes the effect of information and communication technology (ICT) on credit administration in Nigeria from 2008 to 2021. The population of the study consists of 9 listed banks in the Nigerian stock exchange. ICT was proxied by internet access, credit administration by loans and advance and non-performing loans by ratio of total loans. The ARDL and the Toda and Yamamoto causality models were adopted to assess the co-integrating nexus. Findings revealed that effective deployment and integration of ICT into banking operations significantly reduces fabricated customers’ security documents and non-performing loans effect on banks profitability. The study recommends a comprehensive credit application scrutiny, and data sharing among banks, to minimise predatory debtors’ impact on banks financial performance
EFFECTS OF GENDER AND FOREIGN BOARD MEMBERSHIP ON PERFORMANCE OF NIGERIAN DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS
This study examined the relationship between gender and foreign membership of the board and the financial performance of deposit money banks (DMBs) in Nigeria. Ex-post facto study methodology using longitudinal and panel technique was used to gather data from twelve carefully chosen banks between 2012 and 2022. The research made use of balanced panel data analysis, pooled OLS regression, fixed effects, and random effects techniques, as well as descriptive statistics. The study found that board member gender significantly influence the performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. A significant relationship was also found between foreign board membership and the performance (return on equity and Tobin’s Q) of quoted deposit money banks in Nigeria. However, foreign board membership does not significantly affect return on asset of DMBs in Nigeria. It is recommended that banks comply with the stipulated guidelines to accommodate a more diverse set of skills, experiences, and expertise and for better representation of various stakeholders
COMMERCIAL BANKS’ LOAN AND CAPITAL FORMATION IN SMALL AND MEDIUM-SCALE ENTERPRISES: A STUDY OF UNITED BANK FOR AFRICA (UBA) BRANCH, ZAKI-BIAM, BENUE STATE
This study examined the role played by commercial banks in generating finance for SMEs in United Bank for Africa. A sample of 39 was drawn from the staff of UBA and SMEs Managers/operators that have account with the bank. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted for the study and the instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. Thisquestionnaire was tested and confirmed for reliability and validity before usage. Ordinary least square regression with the aid of SPSSv25 statistical tool was employed for testing the formulated hypotheses. Findings indicate that short terms loan is positively related to SMEs capital formation, banks overdraft is positively related to SMEs capital formation and discounted bill of exchange is positively related to SMEs capital formation. Based on the study’s findings, recommendations in the following forms were made. Tat the government should cut down interest rate on loan because the high interest rates on loan could undermine profits and cause a loss of investment. They should develop policy frame work that will help increase access to loan and overdrafts to SMEs. In addition, banks as one of their statutory functions should help SMEs in discounting bills of exchange
PREDICTORS OF CONSUMERS’ ATTITUDE TOWARD MADE-IN NIGERIA CLOTHING IN RIVERS STATE, NIGERIA
The inclination of consumers to purchase domestically manufactured goods is vital for the expansion and sustainability of manufacturing in a free market economy such as Nigeria's. Domestic manufacturers have a significant challenge due to the abundance of imported brands of items, particularly clothes, many of which have successfully positioned themselves as dominant players in the worldwide market. This research aims to contribute to the expanding body of literature on customer attitudes by examining consumers' impressions of Nigerian-made clothes. A quantitative research was conducted in Rivers State, Nigeria, where adult customers who purchase clothes made in Nigeria completed a standardized questionnaire that included Likert scale items. The size of the sample was 536. Result of data analysis using structural equation modelling technique show that the extent of availability of made-in Nigeria clothing in the Local market, the extent of brand awareness and familiarity with made-in Nigeria clothing, Country of origin influence and consumer’s sense of pride were significant predictor variables of consumers’attitude towards made-in Nigeria clothing. The Study recommends among others that the manufacturers association and government is required to set up enlightenment and promotional campaign programme aimed at educating and persuading Nigerians to buy made-in Nigeria goods and clothing in particula
SELECTED MACROECONOMIC VARIABLES AND CAPITAL MARKET PERFORMANCE IN NIGERIA
The need to bridge the capital and investment gap and to guarantee sustainable economic growth and development has more than ever before become pertinent in Nigeria following the recent rise and fall in the global crude oil price also plummeting crude oil production in the country. The capital market is one of the avenues through which savings can be mobilized and allocated for productive investments to diversify the Nigerian economic base. However, the behaviour of macroeconomic variables over the years tends to alter the achievement of this goal. This study uses yearly time series data from the Nigerian Exchange Group Databank and apex bank known as Central Bank of Nigeria. To analyze influence in the case of few chosen macroeconomic parameters regarding the Nigerian capital market's performance between 1981 and 2022. The macroeconomic factors and independent variables chosen were the broad growth in the money supply, interest rates, inflation rates, and exchange rates. The growth rate of market capitalization served as a stand-in for capital market performance. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) analytical approach was used to estimate the model. The outcomes demonstrated that, over both the short and long terms, Market capitalization showed a slight but positive correlation with each of the selected macroeconomic variables. Therefore, the government should formulate and implement policies aimed at achieving stability in interest rates, inflation rates, and exchange rates. Such policies are crucial for fostering an active capital market and ensuring substantial improvement in investment within the capital marke
ROLE OF GENDER AND MARITAL STATUS IN ETHICAL DECISION-MAKING AMONG NIGERIAN EMPLOYEES
The role of gender and marital status in ethical decision-making has important implications for organizational leadership and human resource management in Nigeria. This study aimed to address the gap in the literature by investigating the specific influence of gender on ethical behaviour in Nigerian workplaces. The dataset consisted of responses from 2,623 Nigerian employees across various industries, capturing demographic information and unethical behaviour scores. The study employed statistical methods to examine patterns and relationships between these variables. The results indicated that males are more likely to engage in unethical behaviour than females (B = -1.50, p = 0.001), while married individuals generally exhibited lower levels of ethical behaviour compared to single or divorced individuals. The results of this study suggested that while gender is an important aspect of an individual's identity, it does not appear to be a significant predictor of unethical behaviour in this sample of employee
