FINANCIAL DEEPENING PARAMETERS AND ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE IN DEVELOPING NATIONS: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM THE NIGERIAN ECONOMY 1992-2022
This study examines financial deepening parameters and economic performance in developing nations: Empirical evidence from the Nigerian economy; the Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) was used, applying time series data from 1992 to 2022. Gross domestic product, represented as GDP is the explained variable which implies a substitute for economic growth, whereas credit allocated to the private sector (CPS), total market capitalization, borrowing rate, and money supply are alternatives for financial indicators and financial depth, respectively. The Philip Peron (PP) and Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) unit root tests tested the variables' stationarity. The variables reveal stationarity at level I (0) and of order one I (1). The main finding is that the ratio of sector credit (private) to GDP has an insignificant positive association with economic growth, total market capitalization, and the rate at which lending is made, the ratio at which money flows to GDP demonstrates an adverse insignificant connection with economic growth. All applied variables' historical values were significant predictors of current values. As a result, the inquiry demonstrated that Nigeria’s development and growth of the economy are driven by the improvement and expansion of the financial system characterized by bank-based financial depth. If properly channelled and strengthened, is a promoter of Nigerian economic growt

EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF REMITTANCE ON REAL EXCHANGE RATE IN NIGERIA
This study examined the impact of remittances on real exchange rates in Nigeria over the period of 1986 to 2023. Data for the study were collected from the World Development Indicators (2023) and the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin (2023). The data were analysed using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Model. The results of the ARDL model show that Naira depreciates by about 4.5% following a one-unit increase in remittances in the long run but appreciates by about 2.5% following a one-unit increase in remittances in the short run. In addition, remittances decrease significantly due to the decline in economic growth, money supply and trade openness in the long run. Therefore, the study concludes that foreign remittances have a negative and significant impact on the real exchange rate in the long run but a positive and significant impact on the real exchange rate in the short run. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the government introduce policies that will sustain the negative tendency of foreign remittances on exchange rates, which is crucial for sustained economic growth and development
ASSESSING THE INFLUENCE OF IMPORT OPENNESS ON YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA: THE DICHOTOMY OF MALE AND FEMALE YOUTHS
This study examined the impact of import openness on youth unemployment in Nigeria, disaggregated by total, male, and female youth unemployment, using annual data from 1991 to 2023. Employing the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) estimation technique, the study captured both the short- and long-run dynamics of the influence of import openness on youth unemployment. The findings showed that over time, a 1% increase in import openness causes both the overall youth unemployment rate to grow by 19.1% and the female youth unemployment rate to climb by 35.4%. However, the impact on male youth unemployment was not statistically significant. On the other hand, import openness increases female youth unemployment by 17.4% and overall youth unemployment by 13% in the short run while having no discernible effect on male youth unemployment. The results indicate that Nigeria's employment market exhibits structural vulnerabilities, particularly for young women, amid increasing trade liberalisation. The study highlights the necessity for focused interventions, investments in local production, and gender-sensitive labour policies to mitigate the adverse effects of import dependence on employment opportunities for youth. Inclusive trade and employment policies should be developed based on these observation
EVALUATION OF ELECTORAL SYSTEM IN NIGERIA AND SOUTH AFRICA: A STUDY OF INSTITUTIONS, VOTING, AND DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE
This study carried out a comparative analysis of the electoral system in Nigeria and South Africa and related it with the goal to offer knowledge that will be useful in informing democracy and democratic governance. It applied a qualitative case study approach to synthesise expert views, draw from extant literature, unravel official documents and analyse press releases to examine the electoral process in both countries. The electoral history of Nigeria is beset with frequent political unrest, military interventions and the malpractices that follow in the wake of the electoral process. In particular, Nigerians continue to raise questions about the independence of the electoral management body in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has come under scrutiny without fail since it was formally set up in 1999 by successive administrations. Yet, in recent times, the use of technology in the electoral process has provided respite, even as little has been done to curb the heavy handedness of extra-partisan politicking on the streets. By contrast, though the electoral system in post-apartheid South Africa administered by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is not without its own challenges, it stands out for its relative efficiency and transparency. This is owing, in part, to the model of democratic governance that has bolstered or sustained electoral integrity in South Africa. This benchmark is cited as having boosted the nation’s democratic power. At the same time, Nigeria, on the back of strides it has made in recent times, continues to grapple with the series of destabilising issues that have impinged on its democratic credentials. And so, while both nations continue to straddle the tightrope that props up electoral integrity – a touchstone of democracy – the study’s main findings underscored the fact that there are lessons in how to sustain democratic governance by having in place, a strong, transparent and accountable electoral system. These lessons could also provide pointers to possible reforms for enhancing electoral integrity in both countries. Several recommendations upheld the need for improved, even superior, transparency and accountabilit
