منتخب اردو نظم گو شعرا کی نظموں میں موضوعاتی و ہیئتی تنوّع
Modern poem writers of Urdu have contributed immensely towards embellishing Urdu with newer subjects and have added vigor to language's expression through various experiments in its form. As Gopi Chand Narang so aptly remarked “Uniformity of thought and presentation is poison for creativity”. True to form, stalwarts like Faiz, Rashid, Majeed Amjad, Meeraji, Zia Jalandhari and Jaffar Tahir have been different in their choice of topics and content as well as varied and at the same time brave in using new expressions to convey their august thoughts.
One influence that seems to have permeated a great many of these poets is the influence of western culture and literary tradition. English poetry of whom all of them had a fair share of exposure, propelled these artists to seek newer climes, singular techniques and original experiences in their poetry. Blake, Shelley, Keats and French poets all contributed towards a new era hued by these poets in Urdu poem.
While Faiz gave expression to despicable status of ordinary souls in his poetry, N. M. Rashid and Meeraji used Persian and Hindi diction respectively to give vent to their poetic sensibilities. Majeed Amjad uses different types of forms to bring home to the reader his unique experience of time and space and a certain metaphysical understanding of the world around him. Zia and Jaffar Tahir both use historical traditions and their deep understanding of history to make their readers make sense of their contemporary times.
All in all, these poets were creative enough and bold enough not to shy from using different types of forms, techniques and methods to relate Urdu poetry to new and challenging times.
