The Mystic Melodies of Sultan Bahu
Pakistan’s folk literature can be proud of some of the most exhilarating poetry composed in different Pakistani languages. One such example is the poetry composed by Sultan Bahu, a mystic, poet and scholar from Punjab. The article discusses how Sultan Bahu’s Sufi poetry is an expression of disillusionment with the tradition or formal forms of religion as it emphasises the individual and personal relationship with God, a spiritual experience that he amply describes in his ecstatic poetry. This paper discusses how Sultan Bahu emphasises the power of love and stresses love is more important than the learning in formal or traditional sense. With examples from Sultan Bahu’s Punjabi poetry, the author concludes that Sultan Bahu lives on not only in Punjabi Sufi poetry but his views are also reflected in the poetry of Allama Muhammad Iqbal
