    Any writer, poet or scholar has to be very conscious about the orthographic and grammatical correctness while presenting any work before the public eye. But, surprisingly, many writers and poets of Urdu have been casual while presenting their works in published forms and the title of their books carry errors, either grammatically or orthographically. Though this can also be attributed to composers, proofreaders or publishers, this can be very annoying. This article points out specifically the names of the books where such errors have marred the work. It also offers the correct forms/ spellings. Proper references have also been mentioned for correcting the errors

    Imam Bakhsh Sehbai was a scholar, poet and researcher and was mercilessly killed by the British during the 1857 war of freedom. Sehbai was a renowned scholar and was respected for his work. Not much has been written about his life, works and his death, though some of his works were acknowledged as remarkable and are still valued. This article gives his biographical details as well as the details about his works. Sehbai’s death was tragic and different accounts of his death are found in different books and there have been some inaccuracies too. This article has also removed some of the incorrect accounts regarding Sehbai. With references and endnotes, this article increases our understanding of Sehbai

    An epistle is a cardinal source of research. Not only it reveals the personality, disposition, likes and dislikes, customs, habits and attitudes of the addresser and addressee but also throws light on their times and backdrop. This is the reason that the letters of literati are considered a research heritage and the students, scholars and researcher are benefitted from them in their scholarly pursuits. Keeping this aspect in view, in this article, a few unpublished letters of short story writer Munir Ahmad Sheikh are being presented. These letters were addressed to famous researcher, palaeographer and poet Nazar Sabri. Many literary and scholarly topics are discussed in these letters and we come to know about the personal and literary relationship of two distinguished writers. The writer has included brief biographical sketches of the two personalities and added footnotes for a better understanding of the letters

    ‘Seerat’ is an Arabic word. It means — inter alia — nature, disposition, purity of character and inner qualities. The word ‘seerat’ is also used for the works describing the life and qualities of the last Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).  Seerat- writing in Urdu had begun quite early and some of such works written in the 19th century have rhetorical qualities too. This article introduces four books on seerat written in 19th century, with their merits and shortcomings. These four books are: Marghoob-ul-Quloob by Shah Rauf Ahmed, Fawaid-e-Badriya by Mufti Muhammad Sibghatullah Madrasi, Tawareekh-e-Habeeb-e- Ilaha by Mufti Inayat Ahmed Kakorvi and Ash-shamamat-ul- Amber Min Muallid-ul-Khair-ul-Bariyya by Nawab Siddiq Hasan Khan

    Baba Nanak was the pioneer of Sikh religion but he also wrote poetry and wrote certain other things. This article analyses the impact of Muslim philosophy and Muslim saints on Nanak and his works. Nanak had close and friendly ties with some Muslim Sufis and had befriended some Sufis and musicians who belonged to Baba Fareed’s ‘jamat khana’. Some of the verses by Baba Fareed are included in Sikh scripture as well. The author has also quoted some verses by Allama Iqbal eulogising Baba Nanak

    Analysis of explanations of meanings in Urdu Lughat: Tareekhi Usool Par By Ameena Bibi, Assistant Prof, Department of Urdu, International Islamic University, Islamabad Urdu Dictionary Board (UDB) has compiled and published Urdu’s most comprehensive dictionary, titled Urdu Lughat: Tareekhi Usool Par (Urdu Dictionary: on historical principles). While appreciating the monumental work, the author of this paper has pointed out certain lacuna in the way many of the entries in Urdu Lughat published by UDB are explained. The author has also compared the explanatory wordings in UDB’s dictionary with some other dictionaries of Urdu and has explained what and which is correct and what errors have been committed by UDB editors. Although she is all-praise for the work, she has objectively evaluated some portions of UDB’s dictionary in the light of lexicographic rules

    The cardinal difference between Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Shibli No’mani was the mindset: Syed Ahmed Khan was basically a pro-West modernist bent upon changing the ways the people and specifically the Muslims of the subcontinent believed in certain things. Shibli, on the other hand, though not totally against the West, always stressed the Islamic roots of the Muslims of the subcontinent. Shibli felt that a combination of both eastern and western philosophies and values could help regain the lost glory of the Muslims. This article traces Shibli’s turning towards Islamic models and finds the influence of certain personalities that helped mould Shibli’s thoughts to a great extent

    Urdu Lughat (in historical principle) is a lughat of Urdu Dictionary Board that has been compiled in the light of historical principles, which is relied upon and liked owing to its comprehensiveness, research and diversity. While compiling its lughat (on historical princples), this is prime obligation of Urdu Lughat Board to incorporate and follow such principles.The leading one is to follow the historical principles themselves i.e. reference and its periodic referenc while as well as quoting of most of the contents from already existing or past dictionaries. A period of more than fifty two years has been elapsed of the printing of initial four volumes of Urdu Lughat (on historical principle) during which hundred of thousands of words have been incorporated in Urdu language. It will be well justified if such new words be included with their reference in the upcoming editions to make the Lughat as solid and firm

    Khwaja Meer Dard is a renowned Urdu classical poet. His concise poetry collection is of great importance. But its repeated printing has caused to bring into its text a lot of mistakes. Criticism and research on this text have always been a need of the time. To fulfill this requirement in Pakistan, Dewan-e-Dard, edited by Khalil-ur-Rehman Dawoodi, and in India Dewan-e-Dard, edited by Dr. Ahmad Nasim, have been published. These publications fulfill the requirements of criticism and research to some extent. In this article, analytical examination of the above mentioned manuscripts has been presented. The works of both editors have been examined separately. In the article, method of editing and tools for research have also been explained in detail. Moreover, the manuscripts have also been ranked.
