Hindi is direct descendant of Khari-Boli dialect spoken in Delhi and its surroundings during the 13th century. Khari-Boli was developed from the Shauraseni Apabhramsha which was the third stage of Indo-Aryan Family of Languages in Madhiyadesa. As the progress of Hindi and Urdu was always a controversial topic between the scholars of both languages due to issues of nationalism and religious attachments, therefore it is not very easy to develop a concept about the origin of these languages. The very first misunderstanding regarding the origin of Hindi was created unintentionally by G.A. Grierson. He categorized Madhiyadesa's languages under the titles of 'Eastern Hindi' and 'Western Hindi' in 'Linguistic Survey of India'. Later, in Fort William College, Lallu Lal Kavi made an effort to develop a new (style of) language. He wrote 'Prem Sagar' replacing all Arabic and Persian words with Sanskrit and Braj Basha words. Although both of these developments have no mutual link, however it led to the start of misconceptions about origin of Hindi. This article deals with the theories and facts about the origin of Hindi and analyzes the relationship between Hindi and its dialects.
