Constructing Nigerian Manhood: Gender Symbols and Tropes in Children’s Narratives
This paper examines the representation of masculinity in Nigerian children's literature, focusing on how gender symbols and tropes shape perceptions of Nigerian manhood. The study delves into children's narratives to analyze the sociocultural construction of masculinity, highlighting the impact of these representations on the masculinization of the Nigerian male and broader gender politics. The analysis concentrates on three primary symbolic categories: the male body, sexuality, and agriculture, exploring how these elements contribute to the construction of traditional archetypes of Nigerian manhood. By examining how these symbols glorify strength, virility, and prowess and perpetuate a rigid gender hierarchy, the paper discusses the implications of such representations for gender politics in Nigeria. The glorification of physical dominance, sexual prowess, and specific agricultural practices reinforces traditional masculine ideals and contributes to the marginalization of those who do not conform to these standards. The paper underscores the need for alternative representations in children's literature that challenge these restrictive norms and promote a more nuanced understanding of masculinity in Nigerian society. This study aims to contribute to the evolving discourse on Nigerian and African masculinities, particularly in the context of children's literature, and calls for more intersectional approaches to further explore and transform gender dynamics

The Colonial Mother and the American Other in Mohamed Hassan al Hajwi’s The European Journey
Drawing inspiration from postcolonial theory and Marxist criticism, this article analyses Mohamed Al Hajwi's perception of France in his travelogue, Ar-Rihla al Urobiya (1919), The European Journey. The travel account initially celebrates France's technological progress and modernity, highlighting its influence on Al Hajwi's reform project for Morocco, modelled after the French system. Within this narrative, France assumes the role of a benevolent colonial power within the imperial trope of a protective maternal figure. However, this celebratory discourse undergoes a gradual erosion and eventual subversion as Al Hajwi encounters the American Other during his travels in France. His discovery of America’s formidable military prowess and its role in World War I shatters his confidence in France's supremacy, leading to a profound shift from admiration to disillusionment. Towards the end of his journey, Al Hajwi unveils the crisis and inherent vulnerability of France and Europe, underscored by war, labour strikes, and shifting global realities

Risk Literacy and Awareness of Injury during Flood Season in Urban Communities Indonesia
The risk of injury at home due to flooding is often not a concern for many people. This article discusses the importance of risk literacy among urban communities in Surabaya, Indonesia regarding safety at home during floods. The analysis about home-safety used safety paradox theory by James Reasons. The method used was a Focus Group Discussion which was carried out through facilitators among residential environmental activists to reveal four safety paradoxes: (1) invisible versus visible safety issues. (2) Potential damage due to defenses, barriers, and safeguards from flood adaptation. (3) Opinion about the role and function of community services and public facilities in minimizing the danger of flooding. (4) Optimism and failure experiences are more relied on by society. The results of the Focus Group Discussion were fall injuries and electric shock were more important than other risks. Meanwhile, the safety paradox found that the dangers of electric shock and infection were less visible. People preferred to adapt to severe flooding by constructing embankments around the house. Nevertheless, it becomes a cause of fall injury. While public facilities and community services tend to arrive late, people tend to learn from past experiences. The conclusion that is recommended for home safety risk literacy is that it reduces the danger of falls and electric shock compared to other dangers. The recommended activism is safety activism at home through routine communal programs in the villages. The second recommendation is to prioritize risk literacy through the distribution of short videos on social media
