Fertility and geographical segregation are some of the major factors influencing human population growth. High fertility stagnates development by draining resources. The fertility rate of Kisumu East Sub County is rated at 4.8 exceeding the average for the county, national and the global which is 4.2, 3.4 and 2.3 respectively. The purpose of this study is to assess the influence of geographical segregation on fertility of women. This study was guided by Becker's economics theory of fertility and Hägerstrand theory of Spatial diffusion. The households was the unit of analysis and a sample size of 384 was obtained as determined by the Fisher’s formula. Cross-sectional descriptive research design was used. 384 women respondents aged between 18-49 were selected using cluster and snowball sampling techniques. Quantitative data such as descriptive statistics: percentages, means and standard deviation was analysed using SPSS version 22. Inferential statistics: chi-square, gamma statistics, spearman’s rank, multiple logistic regressions, multiple correlation coefficient and multinomial logistic regression were used to analyse the data. Qualitative data was analysed by coding, creating categories, themes and patterns then evaluating the usefulness of the information in answering the research questions. Piloted tool revealed a spearman-brown reliability coefficient of .721. All the tests of significance were conducted at ?=0.05. According to the multinomial logistic regression, the influence of cultural norms on first and last child birth remained statistically significant. Sharing common centres and mean number of children born per woman showed strong positive relationship (r = 0.675). Daily and weekly social interactions showed a strong positive significant linear correlation with fertility (r =0.732, p = 0.03). Spearman rank correlation indicated a strong positive and statistically significant linear correlation (r =0.50, p = 0.04) between social interactions and number of children born. Gamma statistic coefficient of 0.493 indicated moderately strong positive association between levels of geographical concentrations and number of children born. Number of children born correlated negatively (r =-0.612, p=0.02) with low geographical concentration. Multiple correlation coefficient analysis showed adjusted R square value of 0.673 indicating that the predictability of number of children born per woman from the combined influence of high and low geographical concentration was significant. The findings of this study will provide knowledge on aspects of geographical segregations influencing fertility among women and will give useful information to reproductive health planners and policy makers on fertility issues in Kisumu East Sub County. Therefore, the study recommends wider adoption of reproductive family health awareness and economic empowerment among women to help reduce the number of children born per woman

Development and Study of a New Keynesian Small Open Economy Model for Policy Analysis in Sudan, Evidence from DSGE Model

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to create a small open economy model for monetary policy discussion and analysis. A new Keynesian model for the Sudanese economy is developed using the DSGE technique. The paper made use of annual data from the period (1998 - 2021). The paper demonstrates that, in the case of a fully-fledged Islamic monetary system, the exchange rate can be used as a proxy for the policy rate and yield results that are consistent with what was expected.  The main findings are that when monetary policy shocks occur, an increase in the exchange rate directly leads to a contraction in aggregate demand, the fluctuations in output in the short run are primarily driven by output, inflation, and exchange rate shocks, that the response of the variables to policy shocks is consistent with economic theory and what is expected from the variables, and that the empirical findings of the model demonstrate how models can help in policy discussion and analysis. The policy implications were that Sudanese authorities can use the exchange rate to track the dynamics in monetary policy DSGE models that can be used for discussion and policy analysis, and Sudanese monetary authorities must pay close attention to output fluctuations based on variance decomposition analysis

Study of effect of Gender Stereotyping leads to Misrecognition of One’s Own Identity

The paper titled ‘Gender stereotyping leads to misrecognition of one’s own identity’ is based on a Youtube series named ‘Man’s World’ by Y-Films Original, presented by The Global Goals For Sustainable Development (United Nations) having a tie-up with India’s most reputed production house, Yash Raj Films. The series ‘Man’s World’  "is a what if story. It is a story about walking in the shoes of women, in that world. The series supports Goal Five of the UN’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development which is about achieving Gender Equality and empowering all girls and women, everywhere."  The aim of this paper is not about achieving the goal of gender equality but to show that gender stereotyping often leads to misrecognition of one’s own identity, that is, it leads to a sense of identity which is not one’s own but assigned by the society. One can argue that in the very first place, identity is never one’s own, instead we get a sense of our identity, our “self” by looking at the other. True, but there is also the idea of self-realization of our identity, when we recognize our true ‘self’ and not the one which is assigned to us by the society, not how society looks at us as just male or female particularly, but how we look at ourselves as an individual

India and the United States, as the world's two largest democracies, share common values and interests that form the basis of their relationship. However, their historical journey towards a closer partnership has been shaped by a range of factors, including political considerations, strategic interests, economic opportunities, and shared challenges on the global stage. The present article sheds light on dynamics in India – US relations during the two tenures of the UPA government (2004-2009 & 2009-2014). As it is a dynamic subject and a matter of contemporary relevance and importance, India-US relations is still attracting the attention of scholars around the world. Statesmen on both sides have bemoaned this period as ‘the lost half century’ or ‘the fifty wasted years’ during which the world’s largest democracy and the world’s oldest democracy failed to cooperate consistently across a range of issues.    The UPA government's tenure marked a turning point in the relationship, characterized by strategic initiatives such as the New Framework for the US-India Defence Relationship and US-India Civil Nuclear Agreement, which paved the way for enhanced defence, nuclear energy, and economic and trade cooperation. It provided a comprehensive roadmap for engagement in areas such as joint exercises, defence trade, and research and development collaboration

The ‘Voice’ of the Public during Social Impact Assessment (SIA): A Case Study of Teesta IV hydroelectric project in India

    Get PDF
The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement 2013 Act (RFCTLARR Act) ensures that the ‘public’ is an integral part of the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) process. The law now mandates that their opinions would be considered in the report through a public hearing of the affected families. However, the inclusion of the affected people is often questioned in developmental projects such as hydropower projects, especially in hilly areas where the local people whose land is acquired are completely dependent upon it for their livelihood. Their resistance is also depicted through collective social action as a result of their former experiences with the outcomes of public projects, due to which the public and private companies forming the SIA report tend to neglect their views. The aim of this paper is to examine the role of public and its inclusion in the SIA process in India, using a case study methodology focusing on the SIA report of Teesta-IV hydroelectric project submitted in 2018. Following a secondary data based approach, this study will argue that the local tribal communities do not equate the construction of dams with the concept of sustainable development. However, this does not cease the construction of those projects, thereby, questioning the notion of inclusion of the local people. It is therefore recommended that the agencies involved in conducting the process of SIA must take into consideration the conflicting views of the affected families and train the consultants to be responsible legally and ethically for project approvals, thereby fostering accountability in the process of development.
